Here's a swanky rumor concerning a new chipset for the Xbox 360 codenamed "Jasper." The new CPU and GPU chips has seen some subtle-yet-noticeable improvements to the 360 ... in theory.
With both chips sporting a feature size of 65 nanometers (compared to the 90nm of the original "Falcon" chipset) the "Jasper" 360 is supposed to run faster and more quietly. In addition, extra heatsinks are in place to combat the famous "three red lights" problem. Snazzy, if true.
This is labeled under rumor since so far we've only seen pictures and no real confirmation, but if it's true (likely), then great. However, after three years on the market, it's a pretty sad state of affairs that Microsoft only just now pulled its thumb out of its arse and gotten around to doing this. I love the games my Xbox 360 plays, but I loathe that machine, and the inherent bullsh*t that Microsoft inflicted on its customers, with a burning passion.
This rumored chipset is three years late.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
And just in defense of Microsoft. At the time the 360 was launched the 65nm process was no way near market ready. Those improvements happen in every consoles lifespan. Just look at pictures of the insides of 1st generation PS1s and last generation PS1s and you'll see the difference.
I think you're right. Made a snappy little edit to reflect that they should already be available.
Just because you mention the edit. Do you have any insight if there will be an edit feature for comments some time in the future?
There nothing more satisfying than correcting your own typo just before someone tries to flame you for it, leaving the to look like total idiots.^^
No seriously an edit feature would be nice.
Lucky for me I wasn't one of the many people plagued by Microsoft's short cuts. So I can understand other's being a little miffed, but I personally have no reason to be. :P
"I think I am, B2!"
Same with me: I only bought mine after the Falcon Mainboard was out which already featured a 65nm GPU.
The Mainboard with the most overheating problems seems to have been the Xenon Mainboard with both CPU and GPU being 90nm.
look here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xbox_360_hardware#Motherboards
Btw: is it just me or does the name for the next mainboard seem just a little bit cocky?
Lucky for me I haven't had any overheating problems. But I did have disc reading problems. One day the machine just stopped reading the discs completely. Thanks to the new install feature it should reduce the chance of that happening again.
also, interesting.
Is it safe to assume that HDMI consoles are less likely to overheat?
Retooling a fab to a new, smaller chip fabrication technology does not happen overnight, nor does it come cheap. Three years too late? A bit of a hyperbole to me.
Just for the record: neither of my two 360s (one my brother's) has redlighted me; on the other hand, several of my friends' models have, and some of them had to wait a long time to get replacements.
If you want to complain about obfuscation of failure rates, or lack of quality customer service, please do so. But don't say that this update is "3 years too late." By that logic, I'm still waiting for my upgradable-memory model, and that, my friend, is more than 20 years late.
@Jedcred
You don't get listened to until you get an avatar.
Also, cool Xbox bro.
And I'd hate to pay more money to Microsoft for their mistakes, but I have an old 2006 model 360 with no HDMI. I may pick up an arcade once the Jasper is more widespread. Haven't had a red ring yet, but I know it's only a matter of time.
Enjoy. (NSFW audio.)

@Sharpless
Sick, just sick.
also, screw you for posting that picture, sterling.
Now, yes, EVERY piece of electronic equipment is prone to failure. But, this RRoD shit - in addition to drive errors and other garbage - have me stopping from pulling the trigger.
Maybe - MAYBE - once this is widespread will I finally "jump in." For now, though, Microsoft can go suck a big one for rushing that shit out of the door.
Competition is great for this industry, but sometimes I wish Sony had not dropped the ball so hard.
*sigh*
