Qore leak reveals first PSP Go images (Update) photo

Above you supposedly have your first look at the PSP Go, Sony's rumored new handheld that we told you about back in March.

This according to Gaming Console Network who has claimed it received the June 2009 issue of Sony's digital magazine Qore a bit early. While they're not the best images (they're said to be snapped from a camera off of a television), what we do see jives with what we've been hearing -- thin like a Blackberry, sliding screen... and no UMD drive.

According to GCN, the episode confirms 16 Gigs of internal memory (our rumors suggested there would be two SKUs, one with 8 Gigs, as well), and a memory slot for more. No price has been announced, but the unit is said to ship in Fall of 2009. The episode reportedly also mentions that the Go will not replace the PSP 3000 on retail shelves; I seem to remember Nintendo saying that about the DS Lite less than a year before they stopped shipping them to retailers.

Another bomb -- the long-awaited Gran Turismo PSP is set for an E3 2009 reveal. Will it only be available as a digital download, as a way to push PSP Go sales and the new direction of the handheld? If these images and information pan out, we'll know more next Tuesday.

More images at GCN.

[Update: Yanking the "rumor" from this one, as we've seen the episode of Qore in question with our own eyes. Sony's John Koller gives Qore's Veronica Belmont a run down of the new handheld, while also revealing that a new Metal Gear game is on the way, along with the aforementioned Gran Turismo.

You can see the world's crappiest YouTube video of part of the segment in question here. Thanks, fadecy!]

[Update 2: Another YouTube video, with better video quality, found after the jump. The audio could use work -- it crackles and is out of sync, so when Veronica opens her mouth, Koller's voice comes out. Totally frightening. But you get the idea. Thanks, electrolemon.]

If this is real, it looks too much like the flip phones the "cool kids" use when they text 24/7.

It looks like about every fake PSP Go already seen on the internet. But if this is real then I have to say it's a shame they didn't manage to squeeze in an extra analog-stick...

Wonder if it'll actually have a decent battery life. That would get me excited at least.

@eternalplayer:

It's just a bad image. The unit is said to be black. I guess what Sony refers to as "piano black."

Memory stick slot means custom firmware means I'm all in!

However, I hope they decide to port a bunch of existing on-UMD PSP games to digital, because I REALLY wanna play Crimson Gem Saga et al without having to kill my battery on that drive.

That looks terrible, that famous slidey concept version someone mocked up is a lot better:

I'm going to have to agree with Justice on that one. This thing is ugly as all hell. Plus no second stick equals no buy.

@Dex: If they added a second analog nub it would divide the user base. Even though it's a good idea, it's not smart business for them.

I'm not sure what to think of this, but I guess we'll find out soon enough

That analog looks like just about the most uncomfortable control method ever devised.

Absolutely Fail. That means it must be real.

The point of having a sliding case is so you can have a bigger display screen while still keeping the same size for a handheld device. Oh well...

Well, I guess I'm in the minority for being excited about this. It looks a bit awkward, but no worse than the current PSP designs.

The fact that it's UMD-less and has 16GB of internal memory makes me ecstatic! And frankly, I think the flip-status is great. If it manages to condense the overall size, that's a win-win for cool looks and efficiency!

On another note, they stopped shipping DS Lites?

@unangbangkay: Didn't the 3000 have a memory slot too and was proven to be extremely difficult to hack? =P

Serious question, I had a 2000 from Jan 08 and I didn't have to worry about the unhackable 2000s and all.

I think it looks fine, my only problem is the controller layout. My thumb gets cramped just from using the analogue nub on my PSP-1000, I couldn't imagine being able to play that thing for more than 15 minutes, it looks that guy's really needing to stretch his thumbs down to work that thing... But, I'll have to wait until it comes out and give it a try. I love the idea of a portable system that runs entirely off of digital download, and the battery life is probably better as well, and the hard drive would make it great for watching videos and listening to music, so even if it fails in gameplay at least it'll have it's place. :)

Only one question, and the main one. What does it cost?
I mean, the PSP now is quite expensive, and though I would love to own one, for the handful of titles worth owning, all 5 of them. I can't help but think this will fall on its face, like its older brother.

As much as I'm hopeful for this new unit, it damn well better not have the "upgrade" or "feature" that the 3000 does in the form of unnecessary and unwanted scan lines.

Also, C'mon homebrew! All I want is the ability to play older system ROMs. I don't give a damn if PSP games turn out to be uncrackable; just let me port and play anything from NES-PSone!

Can't wait to see what kind of battery life this thing will get without a useless UMD drive!

Youtube videos aren't currently working in my favor on my crappy comp. So I couldn't really hear or see over half the video. But the thing is called PSP Go, not PSP 2. It's just a re-imagining of the original PSP. People are all complaining about the design because it has no second analog, thinking its a PSP 2. Not once has it been said that this will be a PSP 2, that's something that the media said. I don't remember Sony officially saying they were making a PSP 2. So people should stop treating it as a PSP 2. It's just a damn re-design of the original PSP people. Stop hating on the damn thing because it doesn't have a second analog.

Ah WTF is that? It looks so fulgy! It looks like some cheap shitty Tiger Electronics thing right out of the late 80's, or early 90's. It doesn't even look anything like the current PSP. They should of at least kept it black, and sleek looking. This thing is just a abomination!

All I see is comments about the second analog , why is that?!! Why I am perfectly fine with one analog on my PSP?

The concept is pretty cool but I'm not sure if it's gonna work out in the end. It looks small enough to fit in my pocket and a new MGS and Gran Turismo is relevant to my interest.

We'll see if I still 'DO WANT' on the release.
