Rumortoid: PSP successor confirmed by mystery source photo

Pocket Gamer is reporting that a new PSP has been confirmed by a mystery source within the development team. While some of the information is stuff we've already heard, mostly with our own ears, fresh trinkets of news includes the "fact" that it is due to arrive before Christmas, and that it is looking to be a potential iPhone beater.

Once again, this new PSP is fabled to have a sliding screen that hides all the buttons, perhaps finally making the PSP useful for playing music and movies, since the current one is not. As well as the usual D-Pad and face buttons, twin thumbsticks have also been promised.

As of writing, Sony is yet to issue a response, obviously. If Sony has truly come up with a system that doesn't have exposed face buttons that easily skip parts of podcasts and films, then I might finally upgrade, and I won't even talk about how farcical Sony's being in issuing its fourth PSP model.

Our own boys at Destructoid also heard plenty about the PSP, scooping everyone in the world with journalism. Make sure to check out the video of our GDC contingent, because people ignore it when we have stuff to say.

I would happily buy a new PSP if it is a PSP2. If this is only another redesign I will pass.

If this is coming I guess Sony will announce it at E3.

If Sony can keep the form factor down I think a slidey PSP would be awesome.

Isn't it going to be fully digital? No UMD drive? If so it should be called a PSD

iPhone beater? Sounds like Sony's pretty ambitious with this, though I remain skeptical. Still, it looks sexy and I want one.

I love buying a PSP and then having them release a new version like every 5 months after I got one. It really makes me feel special.

Meh, at least I got the last good PSP (early Slim). Everything else is unhackable...

That does look very sexy - Though not extremely protective of the screen.

Though, if that was a touch screen....

Hopefully the screen has some sort of protective covering over it, since all it seems to take is a slight tap to leave a noticeable mark on the current one.

Looks like Sony are still hell bent on providing handheld versions of console experiences. It looks cool as hell but if i pulled out something like that on a bus i'd get mugged in precisely 3 seconds. That's provided some chav doesn't just shout 'geek' and throw their bottle of cider at me.

you know, I don't get people giving the PSP crap for upgrading. The DS has done the updrade thing too, and take a lot less heat for it. Personally, I don't see the problem either way.

Anyways, if this has so many new features, I'll be picking it up. I love my PSP... then again I import so much, so I never feel the game sting some do.

PSPs 4th upgrade is a bad idea conversely The DS's 3rd upgrade is a seriously good move? Biased much?

Ill give you that the DS original or "fat git" as its lovingly know to DS lite was a good move from a disgusting design to something you could fap over, but the DSi is just a minor upgrade, yet it commands a £50 premium in britian. At least the PSPs minor upgrades still sell for the same price, if not cheaper than the original 1000 model.

A while ago I remember reading something that has several "concept" PSP's. Or rather a: how would you like your PSP to actually be? gathering.
these look a lot like some of the things that showed up there.
I just really hope they're doing something for screen protection. I never intentionally scratch something but well...accidents happen.

Why isn't the current PSP useful for playing music and movies, Jim? Did you not realize that it has a hold button on the top that locks the buttons?

It won't be any more useful for music and movies if they keep the same clunky interface that hates subfolders so much.

So, confirmed by an unofficial mystery source? Isn't that the same as, like, still unconfirmed?

"potential iPhone beater" -

Does this mean they are considering making it a phone as well?

Get rid of the UMD drive, make all/most PSP games DLC, have a hard drive, and I'm sold. Until then, I'll keep my PSP phat. That does look cool though.

i think that most of us know that this apparatus in this picture WILL NOT and hopefully WILL NOT replace the original PSP concept COME ON NO UMD SUPPORT thats BS if anything i personally believe that graphics are way better when there read on some sort of disc format and if and only if THIS NEW PSP has enough internal memory to display the same if not better graphics the PSP has done there really isn't any reason for me to get it but theres my other idea that this really isn't going to be your SO CALLED BETTER PSP when in fact readers and bloggers like myself didn't take in consideration THAT THIS CONCEPT PICTURE MIGHT POSSIBLE BE A PS3 EXTENSION!!!!!!! LIKE I AM THE ONLY PERSON THAT GETS SICK AND TIRED OF CARRYING THERE PS3 FROM DESTINATION TO DESTINATION OR SETTING SOMEWHERE BORED WAITING TO PLAY KILLZONE 2 ONLINE OR SINGLE PLAYER JUST THINK ABOUT IT "THE POWER OF YOUR PS3 IN THE PALM OF YOUR HAND" OR THE THE ABILITY TO PLAY OF YOUR PS3 GAMES ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD VIA INTERNET CONNECTION think about it

or it can be like a person joystick that displays extra information throughout a game or displays hidden levels like HOW THE GAME CUBE and GAME BOY ADVANCE did with that ZELDA FOR SWORDS GAME but INSTEAD A GAZILLION TIMES BETTER i know it sounds stupid but just think about it say if the main character gets knocked out or falls asleep you can look at the screen and interact with the character while he or she is sedated like you can go around unlockin puzzles or GO THROUGH PREMENATIONS on how to fight BOSS BATTLES THAT HAVE YET TO COME or A SYSTEM DIAGNOSTIC DISPLAY SHOWING WHAT THE INTERNAL AND EXTERNAL TEMPERATURES ARE BASED ON A SERIES OF CALCULATION THE PS3 DOES CAUSE I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW WHEN ITS TIME TO COOL DOWN INSTEAD OF IT SHUTING DOWN AUTOMATICALLY WHILE IM SAVING SOMETHING
