Rumortoid: PS4 caused Phil Harrison to quit Sony photo

A rather interesting Rumortoid has come out of the woodwork this morning, as it's been whispered that the inevitable PS4 development cycle and feelings of deja vu caused Phil Harrison to quit Sony.

"He could see he was about to get involved in another PlayStation cycle, and obviously wanted something new," a source told Videogaming247. "The same thing was happening again and he’d been through it enough times to want to move on."

Interesting, if true, but considering Harrison never really gave a reason for his exit, it's not likely that such a thing will be confirmed. When Harrison joined Atari, however, he was quoted as saying that the company's focus on so-called "casual" games was very exciting. I guess he's just not a Killzone fan.

If it IS true, Harrison certainly got his wish of freshness. I'm sure Alone in the Dark was a very thrilling experience for him.

So, he was sick of the development cycle and not the actual console launch? I can see console development being a lot of work, but it would also seem like interesting and rewarding work at the end of the day. However, the thought of reliving another PS3-style launch fiasco would be enough to make me rethink my position.

He really could have done better. I mean...Atari? Really, Phil? If this is true, I'm surprised he didn't stick it out until the PS4 actually launched. It seems like Sony would be smart enough to not repeat something like the PS3 launch.

Phil Harrison probably regrets his decision because Atari is on the verge of not existing anymore.

"It's a very interesting and frustrating thing for me to experience because I have been banging the drum about social gaming for a long time, with SingStar, EyeToy and Buzz," he said during a private lunch taking place during GDC week.

"And our Japanese colleagues said that there is no such thing as social gaming in Japan — people do not play games on the same sofa together in each other's homes. It will never happen. And then out comes the Wii."

I think gitrooman is on to something... it seems that Phil was sick of not being listened to at Sony

PS4 development, wow. They really don't want to be a year late this time. I think it's hilarious how all these companies say their system has legs for 10 years, and then they are developing apparently 6 years in advance.
