Rumortoid: PS3 Slim manufacturing to start in July photo

Ah, the PS3 Slim. Rumor magnet. First we heard that one existed, and then we saw what was said to be images of the device. Following that, Destructoid recieved a janky e-mailed cease and dessist letter that we laughed at.  Things calmed down for a bit, but now we hear that Sony has awarded two Taiwanese firms manufacturing contracts, and that units are slated to be delivered by July.

According to the rumor, Taiwanese companies Foxconn and Pegatron have signed agreements to make the flattened-out console. Both of these companies have manufactured the original PS3, mind you. This falls in line with the other rumors of a August price cut. Joystiq says that these units are slated to start shipping in July "to cope with expected summer vacation demands."

I think we've heard enough about the system to believe that it's real. I don't doubt it. Now I'm curious about the pricing and features. I'd bet that backwards compatibility has been left out. But what else has?

Well, they patented a software BC emulation, didn't they?

PS3 Slim huh? Is it going to sacrifice anything for the sake of being smaller? And how small is the PS3 Slim? Cause I had a fun time lugging around my PS2 Slim, let's hope that the PS3 Slim is portable enough. I'm surprised that Microsoft hasn't made a Xbox Slim or 360 Slim yet...

they probably axed the card readers - I don't think anyone used those.

...although it sure saved my ass when I had to pull pics from a memstick pro

I doubt the slim has PS2-BC, but if they eventually patent the emulation of the graphics chip (or reintegrate it into the hardware) in Slim 2.0, I'd definitely consider replacing/double-dipping my current 80GB PS3 for one of those buggers.

It's desist, not dessist. What does Destructoid have against spell check?

First there was those rumours about some sort of big update for the PS3. Then there's the whole patented software BC emulation thing and now the rumours of a slim PS3.
If it's all true it look like Sony's planning big right now. Bout frackin time.

With so many rumors floating around there must be some truth in it right?

Oh Takeshi you ignorant fool. It's the innernets.

I know we haven't seen very good pictures of this thing, but from what I can see it looks fugly as all hell. It might be thinner, but it looks to be 3 feet wide now. I guess we'll see when it's officially announced, but I'm glad I got one a couple months ago and didn't wait for this. Unless it has BC. Then I might be upset.

@Pew: So we can have a wireless adapter at microsoft's crazy prices? No thank you.
if they can put Wi-Fi on a 100g phone they can put it in a console.

The whole reason to make a slim model is to lower production costs. If sony doesn't lower the price, they'll at least keep it the same. That was the reason for the slim ps2 and psp3000. If they bring it down to $299, I'll get one that I can keep in my locker at work, then I can ride my motorcycle everyday. Also, expect a power brick.

Pegatron would be the leader of the Decepticons, if Mattel merged Transformers with She-Ra, Princess of Power.

if this ghostly image of a rumour were true, i'd probably give in.
my roomate already owns the 360 of our place, which has kept me from seriously considering it. however, we were thinking about going splits on a nice shiny OLED for our lair, and i'd love to watch some super crisp blu-rays on it...
