Rumortoid: PS3 price cuts get shown off at FYE photo

Another price drop for the PS3 has been rumored for about as long as the system has been at its current prices. We've heard analysts talk about it, rumors fly everywhere and entire redesigns of the system crop up. Yet throughout it all Sony has staunchly denied that a price cut is coming. Well, here's some more "evidence" that they are liars. Cheap Ass Gamer forum user Oswald9599 managed to get some shots of a sign at FYE that announces the price cuts.

The sign shows that 80gb PS3 going for $299 and the 160gb (still replete with Uncharted: Drakes Fortune) will be $399. Oswald9599 claims that the discounts will be national for FYE. He also notes, though who knows why, that the price drop will most likely occur during the first week of this September. Obviously, none of this has been confirmed by Sony. Maybe it's just a really good sale at FYE despite the sign saying that it's a "new low price," but either way it could be the drop that lots of people were waiting for. How about you? Going to grab a PS3 if these prices do come around?

[Thanks, Solid Squirrel]

Still not as important as the Madballs price drop.

I think it's actually a kind of corruption. It should be 'The proof of the pudding is in the eating', which would be that as nice as a pudding looks the real test of how good it IS is judged by eating it. And so here that would be, seeing this doesn't prove anything until someone actually sells one for $299.99.

Unless 'The proof is in the pudding' is something different.

$299 for a PS3? If that's true, you have yourself a deal Sony.

As XanderSan eluded, the original saying is 'The proof of the pudding is in the eating'. Meaning, the value or quality of something can only be judged when it's put to use. IE Results are what count. The earliest mention I can find online is from 1615 when Miguel De Cervantes published Don Quixote, he uses the phrase there.

As for price cuts...meh, doesn't concern me, only the people who couldn't afford it for the past 3 years shall benefit.

Which of those systems has backwards compatibility? I never got to play Shadows Of The Colossus, and I really, really want to.

@ Doos - Sony just patented software support for full PS2 emulation through the PS3. I believe that's something we'll hear about, come Tuesday.

If this price cut is true, I will probably get a PS3. $300 for the system is the sweet spot for me.

still not interested unless it offers PS2 emulation. I have waaay too many PS2 games not to play them on a new console.

@Mornelithe If it does have full software BC, I'm buying one, and I would hazard a guess to say a lot of other people will, too.

Cant say I'd buy it. Its nothing against the system, but college fees and the lack of games I want other than Valkyria Chronicles is still a big sticking point for me.

Even with BC, I'm still not sure if this is the time for me to get a PS3.. all these damn 'Slim' rumors have me questioning every decision.

I should stop paying attention and just take the plunge.

Mornelithe: I'll definitely be paying attention come Tuesday. I hope to hear good things! Thanks for the heads up!

@ Everyone: It's arguably a make or break situation for Sony, and given how tight-lipped they've been on quite a bit (This time around...), I'm theorizing that they're putting their first party line-up in a month by month order for about the next 12-18 months (They have enough to fill that many months). The Software BC patent that Sony filed, has yet to be spoken of on a corporate level also. Which again, leads me to believe there are several surprises in store for Tuesday. And, given the fact it's going to be a 3 hour speech...there's plenty of room for huge announcements. I'm gonna go ahead and say, BC Emulation, Price Cut, Slim + Bundles (The dream bundle would be Slim+GT5), beyond that, I've no clue. However, just those 4 items, would be huge news. Can't wait until Tuesday, gonna be glued to whatever media source I can to watch it.

If the one of those versions is completely backwards compatible. I don't want to buy a PS3 unless I know I can play my PS1 and PS2 games on it.

@ Aborto Thefetus - Every PS3, since launch, has been fully BC with PS1 games. It's the PS2 that requires special emulation or a hardware addition.

I've said it often, and will keep saying it, PS3 is out of full interest range until PS2 BC is reinstated (and works well). I also wouldn't mind a form factor slimming.

If this price drop happens I will be very interested in getting a PS3 again. I sold my 60GB unit last year, I was strapped for cash and at the time I barely touched the thing for months. Thing is, I have a 360 and it has been real tough to try to justify picking up a PS3 to play a couple key titles when I am already drowning in great games to play... this just may be the nudge I needed.... Uncharted 2 looks awesome.

Matthew-

I stated that the PS3 COULD BE dropped September or even sooner. The signs are sitting at the stores waiting to be put up. Also the rumor that this might be happening this sunday AUG 16, which was posted by some Examiner.com would be, is in no way confirmed or denied. Thanks for putting this up by the way. I'll post more info as I get it.

I like what I see Sony, but you haven't got me yet, Sony. I'm not buying one until I see a slim version and Persona 5 on store shelves. Besides, I just bought my 360 two months ago.

Although...now that the PSP Go is coming out, I might go buy a used PSP if it's cheap enough.

@Mornelithe Actually the MGS4 80 gig model was the crown jewel of the line. 20 gigs more memory, 2 additional USB ports, BC, and two included games. Granted, Pain is hardly what I'd call entertaining, but it was free regardless.

I'm still not buying one until I find one with backwards compatibility. the main reason I want a PS3 is so that I can play MGS 2, 3 and 4. (I've played the first one.) also, Shadow of the Colossus and a bunch of fighting games that I could buy a stick for. (on the top of that list is Capcom vs SNK 2.)
