Ah, we've been talking so much about the PlayStation 3 2.40 firmware update that I almost hate to mention it again. But we need that in-game XMB bad, so we can't give up hope!

Samit recently gave us the lowdown on some new features, as well as a rumored release date... three weeks from now. Now a new rumor trumps this one with a closer release date. NeoGAF's consoul says:

Official announcement on the 30th.
The video walkthrough and official screens of in-game XMB, profiles and trophies will all be out on Monday.

A video walkthrough? Sounds promising. And while I don't care about the trophies, it's good to know that our rumormongers are thinking about them.

Of course, we like the sound of this new rumor, but the previous claim of a E3 release sounds more probable. And while we're throwing around rumors, check this out:

there's also word that konami will release an update to mgs4 shortly after 2.40's release to allow custom soundtracks to be played from the ingame ipod.

Of course, none of this is confirmed. But we can dream, right?

I still have a feeling that they will wait for E3, I'm sure they'll announce it at the rumored time, but I just have this feeling they'll have an announcement where they'll say "download it as of now!"

Jesus has to stop tapdancing first, then they can update. You know how long Jesus can dance. The guys got some serious longevity you see.

Also, ... I got nothin.

Hey, I have a question for you guys: Should I trade in my Xbox 360 to buy a PS3? I have sent it in for repair [unplayable disk] once already and the 1 year warranty is almost up. I love my 360 and don't really want to do this as I'll obviously loose money/games in the transaction, but I also don't want to get stuck with a dead system in the near future that I have to pay to fix myself. The only upcoming exclusive to either system that has me really interested is LittleBigPlanet.

There are fanboy arguments either way xxeyes. If LittleBigPlanet is all you're looking forward to, then I wouldn't bother. LBP looks like a pretty sweet game, but is in no way a system seller in my opinion. Your best bet is to look at the upcoming and past games (PS3) and compare them. Make sure you'll get/keep the system with the biggest, most interesting pile.

@3vbo - I'n not entirely sure if I'm right on this, but I believe that the consensus on why the in-game XMB hasn't been implemented until now is because of the OS footprint.

The PS3 OS takes up too much memory at times and I've read that it has something to do with the predictable text dictionary system that the PS3 uses. Then again, what I've read might be a load of shit too, so don't quote me on it.

That's a rational argument, bhive01. Thanks. I'll probably wait to see if anything earth shattering happens at E3 and make my decision afterward. I'd love to see backwards compatibility added to the cheaper version of the PS3. That would sell me as I didn't own a PS2 and I'd like to play some of the great games of last gen, like Ico. I know I could just get an old PS2, but I'm a purist.

xxeyes, don't get rid of your 360, but do get a PS3. Just save for it. You'll find plenty of games you want by the time you have the money.

if you listen to the in game podcast on MGS4 they do talk about adding your own music like its fact so im sure we will get that option. as for the in game XMB i really hope that it is coming soon, i want to actually be able to send messages without having to leave the game.

@fish. konami also had the impression the in game would have been out by the time mgs4 came out, the gearcast was recorded in feb or march.
