Rumortoid: PS2 slashed to $99? photo

The best sources for leaked information are those who slink out of the dark retail world to reveal and secret and then vanish without a trace. Just that type dropped a hint to Joystiq letting them know that around the 5th of April, the PS2 would see a price drop to $99.

This information supposedly came from Kmart's retail database (see the gallery for a screenshot). Kotaku also says that this price drop will be advertised in a catalog that will come out around the same time the markdown is supposed to happen. I wonder if this could have something to do with that announcement we heard Sony is supposed to be making soon?

At any rate, I have a PS2, but it's great to know if mine ever kicks the can that I could get one for that cheap. After all, it is one of my favorite systems of all time. Now, to wait and see if the rumor comes to fruition...

I'm very tempted. My old PS2 is none-too-reliable, and I'd like to have one both at my parents' place and at my place. I visit for semi-long period sometimes, and its nice to have a dvd player cum video game system available.

I'm thinking about getting the FAT PS2 for the slim one. Now I dont have to worry about finding a PS3 with the BC function.

Yeah dukes they were selling for like 130ish i believe. If you have a broken PS2 giving a "Disc Read Error" and are kinda of handy in electronics you can easily fix it by watching do it yourself youtube videos. I have fixed 2 of them now and they are working just great!

I still have one of the slightly-after-launch systems, which is still going strong. However, if the price drops to $99, I may buy a second one just in case mine craps out years down the road. Having around 110-115 games for it, I figure it's worth having a back-up.

I still have a bulky PS2 with an HDD running FFXI. My friend uses it, since I play(ed) on PC. I replaced that PS2 with a slim that eventually got traded in toward a 60GB PS3. At $100 I may just buy another to keep around.

Bah! Didn't Sony say they had some big news coming up, like this week or something? People were saying it was a PS3 price drop, but this could be that big news! Sony you guys are jerks!

...It's still really expensive...but I may just break and get one. I will have the entire PS2 catalog of great games to play.

I still have my launch PS2. If I had $100 to throw away and my PS2 wasn't chock full of sentimental value I'd be pretty psyched for this.

Considering that half of my unfinished games are PS2-based, I need to pick one of these up while I can. That black one is calling my name, as long as it comes with the aformentioned [pictured] 'Diagonal Stand' thingy. I'll be playing Persona games 'til Yomotsu-Shikome learns to cast Maziodyne o_0.

I'm amazed that it wasn't already $99. Considering that you still have to buy at least one memory card along with the system itself, it's not that much cheaper than a 360 Arcade right now.

I just thought of something, how about small PS2 slim with PSP UMD disc drive in it. How odd would that be if that came out?

You know, I never had a PS2 so I might get one this summer. We'll see, but the price drop sounds good to me. Now they just have to do the same with the PS3.

Whatever... Sony lives in the non-recession world somewhere outside of even it's money losing self.

This was a great maneuver to get people out there to pick up a 9 year old console Sony.

Or I could just shell out some cash and buy a BC PS3 off of ebay or Gamestop, like I did almost 2 years ago for less than what this and a PS3 would cost now.

Or buy a secondhand PS2 for $50.

Or buy an inexpensive current gen console.

But I'm sure Sony's going to sweep up all those lingering lost Xbox and Gamecube sales out there with this recent price cut.

Now folk whining about the lack of BC in the PS3 can get actually afford a PS2! You know, to play those beloved games they seemingly missed for the last 9 years, yet demand the newer console should play them.
