Rumortoid: No UMD version of Patapon 2? photo

Patapon 2 is releasing in the US soon, and according to rumors, you won't be able to find a copy anywhere ... not a physical copy, anyway. Apparently, Sony will be pushing the game as a digital title, so much so that when the game ships to retail, there won't be a disc in the box. Only a code to download the thing.

That's right, even though Patapon 2 will be available to buy in stores, you'll only get a voucher enabling you to download the game. Word has it that the game will cost $15 if downloaded directly from the PlayStation Network Store, but the voucher will cost $19.99 at retail. That doesn't make much sense.

How likely is the rumor? It would seem odd, since Sony's stated intention is to ship games both as UMD discs and as downloads simultaneously. I like that two-pronged distribution model, since it provides a choice as to how you get your games. This, obviously, removes all choice from the purchase. Either you download it, or you don't get it at all.

With retail still a powerful part of the industry, it seems illogical that Sony would do this. Perhaps it's an experiment to gauge the success of downloadable titles. Perhaps this rumor is simply bunk. Still, it wouldn't be the first time Sony's done something weird.

The game is already up in the EU store.

This isn't weird at all. Considering all games will be streamed and downloaded eventually.

File size for games is something of an issue for me - I like to have a variety of movies and TV shows on my memory stick, and the memory sticks these days are too small to hold both the games and the media I want on them (unless I spend a crapload on a big pro duo).

I hope the next version of the PSP has a HUGE internal harddrive, otherwise the download only future will be a pain in the a$$.

I think it's good strategy. Think of it as a sacrificial game, one that they are giving up for the internet gods. In exchange, you get people who'd never buy a game online buying the game, because they are fans of the label. Imagine if Nintendo offered a high profile Mario game for download only? It would break some barriers, and it'd make lots of guys who are allergic to digital distribution to take the plunge. Once you see that's no big deal, and that you can still play your game, and re-download it as many times as you want (there's still skepticism about this even if we hear it being said repeatedly) you accept more digital download. I prefer digital copies to real ones, but that's because I don't live in the US, and getting the discs is a real chore for me

To me this all seems reasonable. The retailer gets a small chunk of the purchase and Sony wants the same amount of profit no matter where you get the game. It might seem weird, but it just might be a marketing strategy in my opinion. When you compare the prices of the two, the consumer will go after the better deal, enticing the consumer to buy the better deal right away. I know I'm not the only one who gets an urge to buy when they think they're getting a really good deal.

I guess it depends on how much money went into Patapon 2's development.

I think sony figures there's enough of a following for Patapon that they can test it as a digital download.

I'm indifferent, I'd like to always have the game with me, It'd be very convienient

Somebody was on acid while making up these rumors. Although the price does seem fair.

Is this the beginning of the UMD death? I think so.

Probably because anyone who is actually interested in the game has already not-downloaded it last month.

I would want this game as a UMD. I don't want to have to worry about having the right memory card or whatever just to play it.

Plus, boxart.

No UMD, no purchase. Simple as that. I want to OWN what I buy.

I doubt it's true. The Asian version in Japan and Korea is UMD, and someone already said it's available in the EU store.

Digital downloads suck anyway

Well seeing that I have a hard copy in my hands I really doubt America will not receive the same treatment.

I downloaded this when it arrived on the PSN, it's brilliant, I wouldn't want a UMD. It's only about 300mb, so it's a pretty manageable file.

however, I also downloaded Loco Roco 2 for my girlfriend, now that son of a bitch is 1.5gb - so on my 2gig card I pretty much need to empty it to put it on there. That is TOO FUCKING BIG for a download game.

Having Loco Roco 2 on my PSP has destroyed any chance of using it for video / music or anything like that. Fucking ball ache.
