Rumortoid: Nintendo 'bummed' that Kid Icarus Wii wasn't ready in 2008 photo

Although I freaking love Animal Crossing: City Folk, I understand why a lot of people thought Nintendo's 2008 holiday line up was pretty weak. Compared to Q4 2007's releases of Metroid Prime 3 and Super Mario Galaxy, and Q4 2006's The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, Q4 2008 on the Wii was the driest holiday yet for the little white shat-box.

Rumor has it that this dry spell wasn't always part of the plan. According to an inside source, Nintendo was originally planning to present Kid Icarus Wii at E3 2008, then release the game a few months later. Due to problems with Factor 5 (the developer long rumored to have ties to the project), that plan fell through, which left Nintendo of America feeling "pretty bummed." Kid Icarus Wii may still come together if Factor 5 can find someone to give them lots of money (hint: Nintendo has lots of money).

If the production art above (rumored to be leaked from Factor 5) is any indication, I'm not so sure that I mind that this project is on hold. Guys, it's Kid Icarus, not Generic Americ-anime Action Hero Icarus, or Tatooed Man with Muscles and Frowns Icarus. I've already got Kratos, Billy from Resident Evil Zero, and god know how many other videogame tough guys to meet my tattooed, frowning muscle-man needs. I think that some kids were never meant to grow up, and Pit from Kid Icarus is one of them.

I for one am excited that they haven't found a whacky waggle gimmick to tack onto Kid Icarus. The longer the work on it, the better chance they'll just give up and use a decent control scheme.

I'm not sympathetic. Instead of diverting money and resources to games that people actually look forward to playing, Ninetendo decided to release cutesy shit like Wii Music.

I definitely agree with the not-really-so-much-like-Kid-Icarus comment, though. Looks more like he's supposed to be He-Man's little brother -- the long-lost twin that the Sorceress never told us about.

Oh, well. Lots of good stuff Wii-bound for 2009 to make up for a weak 2008.

How about this guy looks alot more interesting than another generic Nintendo character, including Kid Icarus?

Oh yeah I'm sure they were so bummed.

they don't give a flying shit about real games.

Nintendo is the single greatest producer of First Party games, and the WORST ever as far as delays go.

I mean jesus, does anyone remember the wait for Ocarina of Time. "Oh totally this year. Oh wait! Next year. No seriously! Next year!" Sure it was incredible but they reveal things way too early sometimes.

I suppose I'm glad to see Nintendo showing some sort of remorse or whathaveyou. What strikes me is that it doesn't seem like the big N has done anything about it yet.

The white shat-box.

I love the Wii's console library, but lets face it, the hardware is crap.

@ EternalDeathSlayer- I love change, but not when it's unessesary. Pit's redesign from Brawl would be perfect for a new Kid Icarus game. This redesign betrays everything the character is about.

And hey, aren't you the guy who said that even if God of War 3 is exactly like God of War 1 and 2, you'd still love it?

Fair enough Jon. I agree actually, the Smash Bros version would be cool. And I guess you're right, it didn't need to be changed.

But if they did change it, I'd still be very open to playing and hopefully enjoying the game.

It's getting retooled for a re-announcement as Mii Icarus, featuring minigames based vaguely on the NES game. (Like one where you go up two screens and then die.)

@ DeathSlayer- You're also right. Who am I to judge a game based on some rumored production art? The final product may look and play better than any other Wii game EVAR.

I try to take a hard stance in some of my blogs just to get the discussion started, but truth be told, I'd love to play a Mario game with realistic graphics that plays like GTA, or an M rated Pokemon game shows how brutal that cock fighting sim for kids really is.

I'm totally down with Nintendo changing things up.

Don't forget about the slave labor portion of the Pokemon games as well. I lurves me some pain and anguish in those big blue anime eyes.

I'm glad I'm not the only human who loved animal crossing Wii (It helps I never played the first three I suppose), and since my only exposure to Kid Icarus is the Virtual Console version (and the Brawl version of Pit) I can't say I'm excited for a new game in the series, but I am curious to try it.

How can you even make a new Kid Icarus game? The mechanics are so sold and there hasn't been one in almost 20 years.

@Jonathan

Wii's Hardware is FAR from crap. You must not enjoy videogames for what they are and the enjoyment and fun that can be had from all different types of games. I own 20 Wii game, and have probably played at least 30. For a system thats been out for 2 years, I don't see the problem.

When you have a 360 and a PS3's library to play as well, I don't NEED a AAA game every month. Its not possible and never has been the case.

I think you're just another one of Destructoid's oversized babies. Bunch of damn whining. Its old. So fucking old.

We might actually witness Pit's coming of age in the wii version of the game, Ocarina of time all over again at the temple of time, hence the concept art. As for muscular tatooed people i don't seem to remember any such character on the wii yet, so i for one would gladly accept jonathan, as a wii only owner...yeah but not the cross between heman and prince of persia as others have stated.

@dollrapist

Jonathan is destructoid's biggest wii supporter in this camp, so i am not sure what you are talking about...but i will agree with you that the hardware is not soooo crap, just relatively crap compared to the other systems, but hey, some of the best games last year looked like they were made 15 years ago, so im not all for graphics and cutscenes either and can name more than 20 games i love for my wii...

@ Dollrapist- Sounds like you've got some pent up anger at Destructoid there. I'm sort of glad for it, as I've never been accused of being biased against the Wii before.

Amazing.

But anyway, for the record, I love the Wii's game library. I own about 40 games for the thing. It's easily my favoriate conole this generation.

However, the hardware itself is overpriced and weak. The Xbox 360, a much more powerful piece of hardware, costs $50 less than the Wii.

For what the Wii can do, the console should cost $150 new at the very most.

I totally agree. i own no current gen system BUT the Wii and even I'm pretty upset at having paid current gen prices for something that I can say is much better than the Gamecube in any respect. I love a lot of things about the Wii, but its power-price ratio is way too lopsided. I wish they had just kept the controllers at their priced and left the system cheap. It only makes sense as the controllers are the more impressive and possibly more expensive (to develop) of the two.

@ mikeyed- Yeah, if I didn't know that the Gamecube costs $99 new, then I'd be totally fine with the Wii's price tag.

THAT EXPLAINS IT!

Either way, if this is true do you think Nintendo would take Factor 5 under their wing or take their product internally and let the team that failed them, factor 5, die?

I'd be very excited if they bought Factor 5 to be honest. I think that team with creative input and QA done by Nintendo could actually produce brilliant games, essentially give them tech duties. They make a pretty game.

As Capcom as done with Bionic Commando:Rearmed, Nintendo SHOULD have done an updated, enhanced remake of the original Kid Icarus(1986).
I mean, I loved Kid Icarus when I was a baby boy, but that was a bit of time ago. I hardly even remember the game... Actually I'll never, eeever forget what an asshole the Eggplant Wizard was! I hate you, Eggplant Wizard!

Hey...
While listening to the Brawl Kid Icarus Underworld theme(love that piece of music) and searching for more information concerning the rumored sequel, I stumbled across this...

This is much, much better! Let's hope Nintendo goes in this art direction to revive the beloved franchise.
