Rumortoid: Next Xbox to be 'forward compatible' photo

Rumors happen on the Internet, and the latest is talk of a "forward compatible" next generation Xbox that will enhance 360 titles which will be old and disgusting by then.

The ever-anonymous sources claim that 360 titles running on the next Xbox will feature graphical improvements, including increased draw distances, improved framerate and more anti-aliasing, in a manner similar to the improvements PC games undergo when playing on high-end equipment.

Apparently, Microsoft is "testing the waters" right now before any final specs are decided upon. This certainly sounds like something MS would look into, but what do you think? Feasible? Worth pursuing? Feel free to share your views.

So far, there has been no confirmation that Microsoft is looking into a console that isn't more fragile than a baby with brittle-bone disease this time. Not that I'm bitter about my 360 getting the red lights last week or anything.

This sounds very possible. It would be worth their while with the strong library of 360 games out.

That's a great idea. Definitely something MS would do.

@SnakeDude4Life

I bought the 60gig :)

I am the only person (out of my friends) who uses the BC, my other friends could care less if theirs have it or not.

I think 360 games have to be programmed to have this feature so right now nothing you own could be upgraded by the next box.

Wouldn't forward compatible mean that it can play games made for consoles after it? IS IT A TIME MACHINE?!

Microsoft is doing it right. They know their current hardware is shit, but at least they are making improvements on it and considering backwards compatibility for future releases.

Sony is absolutely retarded for eliminating BC, and it will bite them in the ass.

"You mean the way the PS3 makes PS2 and PS1 games look better already?"

Why even say that? Why? Why why why why why?

That is so queer dude. Fanboyishly queer. The only "improvements" that the PS3 gives, are pretty much higher resolution, decreased load times, and "smoothing"... woohoo. It's a shame that the rest of the PS3's coming out, for the foreseeable future, won't even support BC.

I think it is great that MS is keeping BC in mind and I guarantee you they will not make a faulty console next time around. It cost them a billion dollars with the extended warranty on the 360, which was a honorable move on their part. My friends and I never got a fucking warranty extension when our PS2's took a shit on us.

"It's not like they suffered any consequences for that. Brand loyalists have made that kind of negligent production acceptable to Microsoft."

WUT? You don't consider ONE BILLION DOLLARS to be a consequence? You sir must be rich. Any company that has made a billion dollar mistake, no matter how much money they have, will not make that same mistake twice. You are a blind fool if you believe that by sticking with the 360 and supporting MS, you will in turn bring about another malfunctioning console.

Anyway, I am just sick of you damn PS3 fanboys jumping all over MS articles with gay flames in your eyes. Why even comment if you hate them so much? I support MS, the 360 is all I own. I don't care to own a PS3, that is my choice. Let us have our own consoles in peace for fuck's sake.

That's not what I think of when I hear "forward-compatible." I think of something like the PS2 playing PS3 games.

Yeah, that's not what forward-compatible even means. All they did was a define backwards-compatible but made it sound "fresh and exciting."

Forward-compatible, as others have noted, means that a game for the next Xbox would play on the 360. Or a PS3 game playing on a PS2, or whatever.

Come on, Jim, you're slippin' here.

"Come on, Jim, you're slippin' here."

Um, I'm NOT the one calling it "forward compatibility," hence why it's in quotes?

No slippery from my end, mate.

Draw distance is a no go, that's game engine specific and source code defined in 99.9% of games. You can't go into your modern PC's video drivers and force view distances up- at most you can hope there's an .ini setting in the game that allows it to be altered beyond defaults and HOPE this doesn't cause the game to bug the fuck out, with things like pop up on items and monsters and invisible geometry.
It's technically unfeasible.

Didn't they promise this for the 360? I still have Xbox games that are sitting there waiting for an update that will never come.

Making the games it plays better sounds nice...though honestly, considering what a joke the 360's BC is, I'm more concerned about whether the next generation will play most/all of this gen's (and dare I dream, last gen's?) games, as opposed to the "uh, we're working on that" garbage situation at hand. I'd much rather be able to play a large library with no enhancements instead of a select few games with a smattering of refinements.

Current games probably won't get a boost, other than going to full 1080p standard (with some movement artifacts), as is possible with PS1 emulators. Changing engine properties to scale is a problem unless Microsoft changes coding guidelines to allow such things to happen if certain conditions are met. It's more complicated than it sounds.

All I care about is that everything actually works, and I can still use all the games I bought online on the new system.

Still, it would be really nice to play my PS2 games in 1080p with full anti-aliasing. I was quite shocked when Sony revealed that the [old] PS3 just had a PS2 chip and memory inside. Wow, what a money siphon. Who the hell approved that design instead of using a hybrid hardware/emulator design, seeing how Sony owns all the IP for the PS2? They missed the chance to sell PS2 games online!

Sounds cool and I really like the idea, but games like Oblivion will still suffer from the mediocre texture resolutions that are built into the console version as opposed to the full spectrum of quality offered in the PC version.
