It doesn't matter what Microsoft says, those rumors of a Blu-ray equipped Xbox 360 continue to roll in. The latest fuel for the rumortoid fire was kindly provided by the Economic Daily News of China, which has stated that plans are underway for a new 360.
ASUS subsidiary Pegatron (founded by a transformer and a flying horse) is said to have been commissioned by The 'Soft to put together a new Xbox 360 complete with Blu-ray disc ROM drive. Seriously, another brand new SKU? Sure ... why not?
With Microsoft still not confirming a thing, this is more speculation, but we can at least confirm that until MS finally announces Blu-ray support, these rumors won't ever go away.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
I don't see how a new 360 makes sense, since everyone's 360 can only play DVDs. An extension like the HD-DVD player makes sense though.
I do want to upgrade to Blu-ray someday, not sure if I'd rather pay like $200 for an add on ofr my 360 or $400 for a a ps3 + blu-ray. I have a feeling that if 360 ever went blu-ray Sony would take a BIG hit.
Maybe later in the lifecycle of the 360 (and they would HAVE to release a cheap Blu-ray addon for older systems for this to make any sense) they would start releasing Blu-ray versions alongside multi-disc DVD versions of games. But at the end of the day they don't want to make another 32x and games will always be made available on DVD.
Blu-ray support will be for movies only.
I could see this happening. I think MS learned their lesson with the HD-DVD add-on and if they really do change their stance on the Blu-Ray format that they will simply make a new SKU, like they did with HDD capacity and the Elite console. Only question is how will they allow older adopters to upgrade to BR drives. That I don't have an answer to. Maybe when your system RRoDs they'll plop the BR drive in. Zing.
What I do know is that it will really piss people off who recently purchased a system. My best friend is going out today to buy one, actually, and as a pretty casual player the Blu-Ray in the PS3 was a big thing for him to overcome. If the 360 releases with BR anytime soon he's gonna be mad upset. Oh well. Can't win 'em all I guess.
On the other hand, who the hell would watch movies on a 360... risking disk scratches, RROD and what not. So its like a back and forth thing that in the end, just makes consumers spend more wasted money.
Nice detective work. Yeah if any news came out of Taiwan or Singapore I'd take it much more seriously... but I wouldn't be surprised to hear of some crazy hybrid/bootleg knockoff 360 that plays cartridges and AM/FM radio come from mainland China :)
And if Talladega Nights doesn't come with it, I'm busting shit up.
Well that's why they would go with a blu-ray add-on if anything... a blu-ray SKU would feel like alienating towards the older customers... with the add-on, every 360 owner new and old would be able to get it, and if it's only being used for movies then integration into the console is completely unnecessary. Though 360 owners would just have to hope they build the add-on better than the disk drive on the 360 to avoid the risk of scratches... has their been complaints of HD-DVD disk's getting scratched in the hddvd add-on?
@Noah All of "softs" hardware comes from China why do you think the RRD exists.
I can see it now, NO you can't make a Chinese bluray, pay the damn 10cents more!
I don't want to browse the web, I don't want to listen to music, I don't want to watch movies, I don't want it to do the dishes (okay well maybe that one). I just want to play games on my GAMES console.
If there wasn't this constant drive to put more crap in the box the things would be much bloody cheaper.
I mean addons are stupid I think the success of the SEGA-32X and SEGA-CD should be proof enough.
Sony doesn't OWN Blu-Ray as everyone seems to assume (honestly, did we have this problem with DVD and the PS2)?
Sony is one of the companies on the board of directors of the Blu-Ray Disc Association. Along with 17 others. So no, they wouldn't have the final say.
As soon as the 360 goes silent - then it can think about being a movie player.
If you move anything that contains a 12x DVD-ROM while it's spinning it will scratch the disc... RROD is essentially a non-issue since switching to 65nm fabrication.... and the noise issue? I bet my Dtoid account that a playing a Blu-Ray would emit the same amount of noise from a PS3 or Blu-Ray 360 because the noise has always been from the Xbox 12x DVD spinning. Incidentally, the fast spinning disc is the same reason why you only have to install games on PS3, the 2x BD-ROM is about 30% slower getting data off the disc.
Sony only cares about Blu-Ray, not how shitty of a format it is for streaming data.
FUD fucking city people. If it wasn't for the Euro Union always fining Microsoft, and Japans insistence that they play shitty games that are otaku approved, the 360 would lead in all 3 regions. The world hates america, even if it has the best GAME machine.
$49.99 for the latest Will Farrell POS semi-pro? fuck off with that.
As for the rest of the thread, I would say this is likely to happen, and that it is likely to be an addon, not a new SKU. People aren't going to want to install games on their 360, any more than they do on their PS3. Unless it's some sort of combo BR/DVD drive that can handle high DVD speeds.
Also, while Sony may be a major player in the Blu-Ray group, primarily they are a group that wants to make money out of spreading BR. They won't stop microsoft putting it in one of the major consoles. The bigger the market penetrance of Blu-ray, the more money they stand to make. Have you ever noticed MSOffice has a mac version?? These companies may be in competition, but they're still primarily abut the bottom line.
I have been tempted to buy a PS3 just to for BD but I don't want to have both consoles and for me the 360 has more games I want to play. Even if I hate the hardware and I am on my 4th, sadly I think it has the best games out there.
Blu-Ray isn't Sony's baby, you know. Sony is only one of 18 companies on the Blu-Ray Disc Association's board of directors. If Sony chose to kick and scream about Microsoft getting Blu-Ray -- which, incidentally, would be a batshit-stupid move -- I somehow doubt the majority of the board would support them in their objection. Microsoft is an extremely powerful, influential company, regardless of their shortcomings, and definitely someone that the BR Disc Association would want helping them get BR discs into more people's homes.
Anyways honestly i think Bluray is a load of crap. Youre paying like 10 bucks more than a DVD for the same content and special features and the difference in picture quality is practically unnoticeable. Maybe if you have a 70inch LCD you can tell the difference...
