Rumortoid: Microsoft dropping 20GB 360 for 60GB model, considering new SKU photo

With the death of HD-DVD, rumors regarding a possible Xbox 360 price drop, and the recent psuedo-confirmation of a Blu-Ray addition to the 360 something had to be up over at Microsoft HQ. It appears that soon, if the rumors are to be trusted, Microsoft will be dropping their 20GB Xbox 360 model in favor of a 60GB default hard drive bundled system.

Now bear with me for a moment as I rampantly speculate, but considering the possible price drop, Blu-Ray addition, switch to a larger hard drive, and rumored new SKU it seems as if Microsoft is planning on introducing a new bundle of some kind.  Now consider all these factoids in the context of Sony's recent reintroduction of their 80GB PS3 model (with Dualshock 3) as their newest bundle and Microsoft creating a new bundle seems like a forgone conclusion.

Granted, these are rumors, but the writing is on the wall at this point and it doesn't seem like a stretch to assume that soon we'll be hearing about a new bundle trundling it's way out of Microsoft.

Nice pic.

Another SKU?? They just officially past Sony's efforts of mass sku-able products.

My children will be trained the same way.

Re: Blu-ray add-on, I'm not sure how Microsoft could add an internal Blu-ray drive and maintain any sort of price advantage over a PS3. Who is in the market for a $500-$550 Xbox 360 that wouldn't play any more games than the other models?

The HD-DVD standalone drive started at, what, $179? A Blu-ray add-on would add at least that much cost. So if you are bundling a drive with a console, again, where's the price advantage over just getting a PS3? Late adopters will find enough games on either console, and 360 owners who want to upgrade wouldn't do so through a bundle with an add-on.

I'd be happier if the headline read "Rumortoid: Microsoft discovers cure for RRoD".

@Max - they're just going to buy the inevitable 360 Blu-Ray add-on.

I hope this is true, so long as they don't bump up the price. A 60GB 360 for $300-350 would be reeeeally nice. Especially if it doesn't red-ring.

@Qais
Remember that one time when you posted a rumor and you didn't say it was a rumor and we were all upset that you didn't say it was a rumor when it was really a rumor? You've come a long way, baby. <3

@TheStripe: I think the add-on idea may yet happen; I'm just questioning the speculation about a potential Blu-ray bundle.

I can't figure out an angle where including Blu-ray capability with the console (internal or external) would help sell Xbox 360s, or at least sell them at prices where Microsoft can profit.

Oh, I totally agree with you. Blu-Ray bundle = never happen. At least not for a few years, maybe in the end of the 360's lifecycle to move units before the new box comes out.

Meh. No more skus. I don't like this new trend because I always feel bad about my previous purchase. Sure, I've gotten a lot of enjoyment out of my two 360s, but I'd love one with a larger hard drive that doesn't break too. Also, I bought two of your damn HD-DVD drives Microsoft!

I has something witty to write down but that awesome dog made me forget.

I don't see how adopting a blu-ray add on would change anything too much really. Having a Blu-Ray 360 would screw every early adoptor....

This is bad and good.

Good in that the weak ass 20GB will be out the door and bad in that it's another damn S.K.U.

Geez. I really doubt that the price would be $179 for the addon. That would far and away the cheapest blu-ray on the market. Are 360 owners going to pay that type of money for a addon. I dunno. I am skeptical.

They already did pay $179 for an add-on, dipshit. I did, HarrassmentPanda did, twice, as did many others. Too bad the format went to hell. Would I pay $179 for a Blu-Ray add-on? Maybe. Each passing day I get more pissed off at Sony for holding back the dual-shock 3's from their bundle, and cutting value at every opportunity. I guess I took it for granted that I'd buy a PS3. If they keep cutting features and cramming more sequels down our throats, I may not. If I don't decide to get a PS3 by the time the Blu-ray add-on is available (and it will be, mark my words) I'm getting the add-on.

What I am saying is the price is going to be way more than $179 for the addon, when there is no other bluray player on the market that is cheaper than $399. So don't get pissed at me that you wasted your money on the HD-DVD, dipshit. lol

I didn't waste my money. Even though the library is at this point finite, I still have access to 100's of movies in beautiful HD with superior features to blu-ray. The x-factor is that as time moves on, those titles are just going to get cheaper. I'll be able to get 300 in HD for ten bucks in a week or two. You want it on Blu-Ray? The price is still $35.

Also, before you talk about how much the standalone players cost, you may want to look into the player that Sony is promising in the next several months for $200, or the $200 blu-ray drive that will be available for PC's everywhere.

You're still the dipshit, dipshit.

wow...someone needs their diaper changed. What's with all the name calling? Geez, lol. I have a 360 and I would not buy the addon simply because I know that in the absence of competition, the prices on Blu-Ray will come down after awhile. The early adopters of this Blu-Ray adopters are going to get burned because they will pay way too much. If you are patient, you will probably be able to get a Blu-Ray for much cheaper than this addon that they are sell through Microsoft. I still don't think that it is as cheap as one might suspect. Oh yeah, if you go on Amazon you can get Blu-Rays for cheaper than $35. Can we be friends again Stripe? lol

Remember the days of just 1 set system and you didn't have a choice between 3-8 different versions of a system? When everyone got the same thing?

I'm all for this stuff but at times, it's pretty damn troublesome to keep seeing rehashes of shit that's already out.

I didn't waste my money on HD-DVD add on, for $50 I got something that upscales dvd's better than most standalone upscaling dvd players.

@Soup or Fly - "I know that in the absence of competition, the prices on Blu-Ray will come down"

Right, just like Comcast's prices come down in a market with no competition. Or DVD. Just like DVD's have gotten SOOOO much cheaper since it never had any competition. Take a quarter of economics and re-read your statement.

If they do this they better do it soon. My 2 year replacement policy from Best Buy expires on April 14th. Until then I can replace my current360 with whatever other model I want and only pay the difference ($50 to upgrade to an Elite at this point).

If I do this and THEN they announce a new (better) SKU, I will be pissed. HURRY UP MICROSOFT!

Also, drunk.

The core needs to go. As do the wired controllers. Seriously, forcing that crap on the low-end owner is almost as bad as having a rumble controller ready to go and not bundling it with systems.

nice pic indeed :-)

also this is pretyy good news for the future 360-players allthough I have to say the list of different SKU's that we've gone through is becoming a bit too long for my liking :-p

I'd rather see them drop the Arcade SKU and not introduce a new SKU. 20GB and 120GB are good enough.

only sku I'm looking for is a RROD resistant unit. Also, kill the core; I want to be able to play arcade ports that don't rip out all their content to fit. Worms was missing so many damn weapons
