Rumortoid: Microsft wants RE5 exclusivity for cash? [Update] photo

There is a rumor swimming about, as such rumors often do, concerning Microsoft and its desire to have Resident Evil 5 as a timed exclusive. The shady word on the street is that The 'Soft will employ the same method it usually does -- throw dollars at everything until "achievement unlocked" appears.

That's all we "know" at the moment, and it's something I'd advise taking with a large pinch of salt until anything more is said. Believable, though? Certainly. Microsoft shelled out a ridiculous amount of cash for Grand Theft Auto IV DLC, and is certainly facing tougher competition from the PlayStation 3 than it did last year. When under pressure to achieve victory, this is the kind of stunt Microsoft pulls.

Of course, just because this may be what Microsoft wants, that doesn't strictly mean Capcom will accept any offers. If true, though, it just goes to show how far Microsoft is willing to go in order to scrape back its momentum.

[Update: That was quick. Capcom has stated that RE5 will remain a multiplatform release. That doesn't mean MS didn't offer, or isn't trying, however. At least Blu-ray fans have nothing to worry about for the time being.]

If Microsoft wants Capcom they'll get capcom.

They're going to buy out the entire industry eventually.

But what does this mean exactly? I am a PS3 owner, so if this means I'm not going to get RE5, then I am going to punch this here kitten (not pictured).

scrape back the momentum?

Man, gotta be careful there mate, or someone might start thinking you hate MS or something.. wouldn't want that would we?

Still, compared to the Wii, Sony and MS are WAAAAY behind. And just out of curiosity... again, not to be a fanboy. But what exactly other than MGS4 does Sony have that should make me want to spend however much on a PS3? Once someone answers that question for me, I'll start believing Sony even has a chance. So far, they sell movie players, not game systems.

Timed-exclusive and multiplatform release are in no way mutually exclusive. Although it doesn't affect me directly, I wouldn't mind seeing this happen. The more 360's that are out there, the more incentive developers have to make games for my system.

You've gotta hand it to m$oft, they don't fuck around. After a pretty shaky start to this whole console lark, they really are running tings these days. The 360 personally doesn't interest me, I'm a little too Retro for all that but I can see why every 16 year old American boy (i.e. a huge game/console buying demographic) is creaming themselves over the machine.

Doubt it, I think this would be the biggest punch in the face for Sony though so it may hold water. One of E3's xbox secrets? The announcement will come from Itagaki as the new head of Xbox Japan.

Damn how does Microsoft make any money? Do they make any money? I think they will end up closing down their own gaming division. They just bought some RPGs, before that FPSs, now their on the Japanese Action game buying mode.

I think I like Sony's plan better, "make money" and "invest", instead of MS's loan from the other departments make money next generation, oh wait, next generation, oh wait, next generation.

There going to be a point when they turn that game division off.

Is this the only way MS can get quality exclusives? Outside of GOW, their exclusive are not that stellar. Interesting.

@Lolthien - Uncharted: Drake's Fortune, Ratchet and Clank: Future, Heavenly Sword, Resistance:FOM, Warhawk, Ninja Gaiden Sigma, Gran Turismo 5: Prolouge (full game coming soon).

Those are just to name a few. Also, before you post a retort, do go out and actually -play- those games before you knock them down. If you've never played them then don't try to respond just by echoing someone elses opinion (IGN, Gamespot, etc etc etc.).

Plus, they have a decent arrangement of PSN games available for download as well.

I mean, the PS3 has been out for like, what, a year and a half? only a year in Europe? What titles did the 360 have during it's first year that made it "the system to buy"?

Dead Rising came out almost 9 months after the 360 release, and Gears of War was a full year after the release. I mean, yeah, it had Halo 2, but what else did it have? Ninety Nine Knights?

The Wii sucks. I sold it last year. Also, MGS4, Uncharted: Drake's Fortune & Ratchet and Clank: Future all gave me goosebumps when I played them. The are beautifully designed games. I have both an 360 and PS3 so I really don't give a shit. Also, go play you sub-par RE Chronicals.

I'm going to be honest here, Jim: This is the very best caption I've ever seen attached to any photo, and it is also without a doubt the best reference I've seen made on Destructoid to date. I've always loved you for the inane Dynasty Warriors complex we share, but this caption has made me feel closer to you than to any other human being I've met on the internet.

Except maybe for that one guy; that dude kicked ass.

Why not? They can sit right in between the people who think I hate Sony and the people who think I hate everything Nintendo does. They can all masturbate over their consoles and smear shit on their balls together!

This doesn't bother me at all. It's how these corporate assholes operate. And anybody that thinks Sony doesn't pull this kind of shit needs their head examined.

Then again I own both a 360 and a PS3 so it really doesn't matter one way or another. I was getting the 360 version anyway.

No point in doing this. I feel its better to have multiformat games and let the customer decide.

RE5 is popular enough to sell on both PS3 and 360. I know MS would like to starve PS3 out of games, but the 360 one may sell more anyway.

They have the potential to make more money with a multiplatform release than whatever Microsoft offered them. Can't really blame MS for trying though.

Can't it be a timed exclusive and a multiplatform release at the same time? I mean, by definition isn't a timed exclusive necessarily a multiplatform release?

Not happening. Maybe if RE5 came out last year, I can see it. But by this time the PS3 install base is big enough to release RE5 with no worries.

They should be putting money into making Gears 2 and Fable 2 not as bad and generic as their predecessors. Assassin's Creed is better than Gears & Fable 1.

I don't see Capcom giving in to the beast. Its RE, it started on the Playstation, there not goin to be like "hmmmm Playstation you had your time, moving on to the 360."

I hope Capcom makes the right decision and makes it multi platform. Every one deserves to be able to play this game.

Except for Wii...fuck Wii. LOL JK I <3 my Wii

I really wouldn't care much if this was released earlier on the 360 than the PS3, I'd just wait the year or so until it came out on the PS3.

But what exactly other than MGS4 does Sony have that should make me want to spend however much on a PS3?

Only the ignorant say such things anymore.

This just in: Microsoft buys Destructoid, Jim Sterling the new spokesman for the Zune. Just Kidding.

Capcom has probably kept their eye on Metal Gear Solid 4 sales and they know that the PS3 version of RE5 will sell more than the 360 in Japan. MGS4 has given hope to the PS3 and has given developers some relief to show that PS3 sells games this time.

Exclusives are great when they emphasize the strengths of the console they are running on. Do you think MGS4 would be even half as epic as it already is if it had been multiplatform? Fuck no.
