Rumortoid: Mario & Sonic doing the Winter Olympics? photo

To me, nothing exemplifies the game industry's contempt for real gamers more than Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games. For the first game officially billed as a Mario and Sonic team up, one could (and should) have reasonably expected an epic platformer of fanservice-stuffed proportions. Instead, we got an Olympic Games cash-in promotion. What a creative waste.

A creative waste it was, but as we've learned by now, creativity means diddly sh*t in this industry, not when there's money to be made. Mario & Sonic has done extremely well in the sales department. So well in fact, that a sequel is being rumored.

Sega has issued a "no comment" with regards to a Spanish magazine that has quite blatantly "hinted" at a new Mario & Sonic being revealed in its next issue. Translations point to the new game revolving around the Winter Olympics. So, same as the first, but with a little more snow.

I have been eagerly awaiting the day when Mario & Sonic would team up in some awesomely nostalgic event of a game. It's never going to happen though, is it? That would probably be too much of a treat for Sega's spiky blue bondage slave.

If Bowser and Eggman can compete in pairs figure skating, I'm all over this.

I guess we'll just have to be content with Brawl.

Mario & Sonic at the Winter Olympic Games - Vancouver 2010?

Just the fact that I live in Vancouver and could be directly involved in the Olympics means I would buy it. :P

Hmm! I dug the first Mario & Sonic game. I dunno why, but it was enjoyable at least.

Either I have the strangest taste in games, or the internet just hates everything.

The Internet hates everything.

Though to be fair, I agree with Jim. growing up I adored Sonic and Mario, and never dreamed there'd be a day where they'd team up in a videogame. Heck, I even wrote and drew a book for a school project where they did (along with Cloud Strife , mega man, and a few other gaming characters, sue me, I was 12). Sadly when they day finally arrived..it was mario and Sonic at the Olympics. Its like getting your ultimate fanboy wish in the shape of a shit flavored cookie.

On the sports side of this--has there ever been a really great Olympics game? The Beijing one did not get good reviews, but it seems to me a full-on Olympics simulator would be a lot of fun, where you pick a country, compete in a bunch of events and try to "win" by getting the most medals.

Oh boy, I can't wait for even more comments about how Sonic should win any speed-related event and Sega isn't thinking things through. It's true, but that doesn't mean every other comment has to point it out, Internet.

Well, we still have Brawl to make epic fight between those two. But still, a Mario & Sonic platformer would have been awesome.

I have no comment toward the game, but I've realized that the whole "Mario vs. Sonic" rivalry hasn't been relevant (or very interesting) for a loooooooooooooooong time.

The first game was lots of fun and I bet this one will be too.

It only makes sense. I hope they are at least considering a proper crossover title.

Hey now, I thought the DS game was pretty cool. Maybe someday they'll make Mario & Sonic Do a Crossover Platformer Where the Entire Internet Bitches About the Sonic Levels, but I'm all for doing another set of Olympic events as Eggman in the meantime.
