You may be old school enough to have played the original Dragon Warrior and Final Fantasy titles, but are you down with the vintage Falcom? If you are one of the proud geeks, you'll know about Ys, the action-RPG series that missed the mainstream in the U.S.

If you're a fan, or you want to learn about the series' roots, you'll be glad to hear that Gamestop has leaked that Atlus is bringing remakes of these titles to the DS. According to Siliconera, the originals come together in a two-game bundle called Legacy of Ys: Books 1 & 2, now sporting 3D graphics, multiplayer action, and a new translation. Those that know Falcom also know that their games are packed with fantastic music, and this new version is supposed to have a remixed score. Nice.

Gamestop has this listed as a Feburary 10, 2009 release. No confirmation from Atlus yet. We nabbed their screenshots to share with you in the gallery below. Above you'll find a trailer for the Japanese DS releases of Ys I and II, which were actually sold separately.

[Update: An email to the Atlus Faithful confirms the release. They also include a video trailer for the US release.]

Excellent news. Played Ys 3 on the TG16 way back in the day. I'll definitely pick up the remakes for the DS. It's unfortunate that the series never really got the distribution it needed to become huge over here. This will definitely help.

Ys 3 > All other Ys

I'm a huge Ys fan, so I'll definitely be getting this

If they fix the battle system, this could be amazing. If not, I'll just stick with the original on the VC.

while we're at it, I wouldn't mind some of the other Ys titles being localized, Books IV and V haven't been brought over to the states, have they?

Y's is the lost action/rpg that everyone has played at one time or another.

Kudos to it coming back again

Son of a bitch... How many copies of Ys I am I going to wind up owning? It's like the fucking White Album of action RPGs.

This is out in Japan already, and it unfortunately sucks. It's not even made by Falcom at all.

And by "it sucks," I mean in the reviews. I'm not saying the game sucks BECAUSE it's not made by Falcom. But all the Falcom ports that are made by other companies do tend to be sub-par.

That is great news! The originals are in definite need of an update, but they were good games for their time.

Hope they make a new anime series with it, but I doubt it.

Played Ys on the SNES. It was pretty, but otherwise unremarkable. I don't remember virtually anything about it, except that it reminded me of Willow, which was a crappier but much more memorable game.
