Rumortoid: Left 4 Dead headed to PlayStation 3 (Update)

     Valve

Words can't express how badly I need to be playing Left 4 Dead right now. Turtle Rock Studios' cooperative multiplayer survival-horror first-person shooter not only falls into more genres than you can shake a stick at, but it also looks damned good.

For now, Turtle Rock has only announced the title for the Xbox 360 and the PC. And, if you were totally hardcore, you'd at least own an Xbox 360 or a PC capable of running the game when it's released later this year. But for you chumps who are not hardcore and only own a PlayStation 3 (note: I'm kidding here, don't start calling me names), we have some good news -- it may soon be coming to Sony's console as well.

During the latest episode of the 1UP Yours podcast, Electronic Gaming Monthly's previews editor Bryan Intihar drops a bit of knowledge, saying that Left 4 Dead will be coming to the Xbox 360, PC, and the PlayStation 3. He quickly adds that while it hasn't been announced, he knows it's coming out.

I touched base with Bryan, and he's sticking to his guns on this one, saying he has the information from a "good source." He also points out that the game is listed as a multiplatform title in EGM's "Games of 2008" feature. The plot thickens! I'm also fairly confident the game will make its way to the PlayStation 3 -- taking a title like this multiplatform just makes sense, and Valve/EA have already proven that the system is more than capable of handling ported Source Engine code.

Whatever the case, if a PS3 port keeps me from getting the game on another console sooner, heads are gonna' roll. And I'm going to eat some developer brains.

[Update: Frenzied, we touched base with Valve Doug Lombardi who says "There is no PS3 version of Left 4 Dead announced, nor in development. Not sure how that got started."

His answer seems pretty straight forward, but we're still holding out hope that the game will make its way to the PS3.]

It figures! Ps3 always gets the left overs of any good title that comes out like 2 years later.....ah well, I'll most likely get the 360 version seeing how the PC had no voice chat

The only thing that would make me buy the PS3 version over the PC verson is if that the PS3 version can play with PC/P360 ppl as you would think it would be a windows live based game for 360/PC.....

This game looks so tight. I can't wait. I love me some zombie killin' action.

Valve hates the PS3 so it's likely an outside developer would do the port (a la The Orange Box). They had no problem releasing OB on the PS3 a couple months late so hopefully the 360 Left 4 Dead won't experience any (more) delays either.

I would rather they not worry about that and just finish it and release it on whatever the hell is done first.

I NEED this game to complete my life.

LOL, this is basically a HL2 mod isn't it? I guess they gotta take the time to make sure it doesn't lag to hell and back on consoles.

That's kind of like saying Gears of War is basically an Unreal Tournament III mod ...

That would totally make me happy as I have pretty much given up on buying games for my 360 since October for fear of the RROD.

In short, yes please!

I doubt it. Source engine just doesn't work on the PS3 without some serious rewrite as evidenced by EA's spectacular fuck up of the Orange Box. Gabe Newell would not work extra to port this game to his most hated console.

That's a shame; even if I only care about the 360 version, more people should be able to play the game.

This new better not be the reason the pc version was push back!!! But seeing the comments at the end it appears it was not in development so why is it taking so long???

Stupid Valve and their incredible looking PC games. They're tempting me to get a job so I could buy a PC gaming rig. I will never get a job. NEVER..... the game does look really good though.

... well that's the dumbest thing i've ever read ... that's like not buying gas because you might get a flat tire at some point ... retarded

if this game ever does go to the ps3 (which i tend to doubt, since the GUYS MAKING THE DAMN GAME are saying it won't happen), everyone will start screaming about how buggy it is and how you are "owed" a patch because the architechture of the ps3 is so abysmally ill suited to video game development any attempt to port to it falls short (ala The Orange Box "slideshow")
