Rumortoid: Kojima working on an FPS

Rumortoid: Kojima working on an FPS photo
     Hideo Kojima

Hideo Kojima, mastermind behind Metal Gear Solid, could be moving away from third-person stealth games with terrible controls in favor of an FPS. Electronic Gaming Monthly’s rumormonger Quartermann has reported on stirrings that Kojima has been visiting studios to get a handle on the genre.

Two specific studios he allegedly visited are Infinity Ward and Guerilla Games, but chances are they won’t say anything about the presumably secret visitations. Kojima isn’t a stranger to the FPS genre entirely. A few months ago he called out Guerilla Games for their rush job on the motion controls in Killzone 2.

This story has about as much substantiation to it as the blueberry pie next to me has blueberries. Which is actually zero, because I don’t have a blueberry pie in my vicinity. I wish I did, but that’s how life is sometimes. We’ll do our best to confirm it, but we probably won’t know for sure until Kojima decides to pitch the title.

Also, it’s important to note that this story is considerably better than an X-Blades clothing update. Consider this the best story on a Saturday at 1:54 A.M. ever.

Kojima should really consider an RPG rather than something too western. MGS is fucking amazing, but I don't know how well he would do on an FPS.

Oh Jesus, here we go again. 4 hours of actual gameplay, 20 hours of opium-inspired cutscenes confirmed.

Just what is so bad about MGS controls? I don't see it.

"The best story on a Saturday at 1:54 A.M. ever"? I'm afraid it even fails at that. It's Saturday night.

No place for Hideo. MGS4 haters are in abundance.

Im actually really curious to see how this turns out considering 3rd person stealth and fps is about as polar opposite as you can get.

Movie, bad controls...ugh. I thought destructoid was better than this. An RPG would a much better choice I agree.

I love MGS4 myself, and hate FPS's. This can only be bad news for me if it is confirmed. Shame on you Brad. You would have done better to go to the bakery and buy a blueberry pie than to ruin my day like this!

I really hope this isn't the case. We have enough fucking FPS games already.

Well, this is interesting. Maybe it'll be a first person shooter in the same way Mirror's Edge is a first person shooter...First person, with guns, but not necessarily a "BANG BANG, RIP AND TEAR, RIP AND TEAR YOUR GUTS" kind of FPS.

And, in response to Coldbrand, it's true that we have enough fucking FPS games as it is..But I don't think Kojima would make one without some sort of narrative. I don't think there's anything inherently wrong with first person shooters. The problem is that many are just thinly-veiled excuses to give the player a gun and have him shoot everything. I don't think the guy who made Metal Gear Solid, no matter how fucking crazy he's gotten, would make a game like that.

I like how most people believe all the traits from MGS will carry over to this unconfirmed title.
Could you even guess that Kojima made Zone of the Enders?

i thought the mgs controls were brill :|

and as uther said long cutscenes are an MGS trait not a kojima trait.

I think this would prove interesting, since recent MGS games have had FPS modes. If Kojima can perfect the design of a japanese FPS, up to the high western standards, of something like Bioshock or Mirrors Edge, I think it could be the kind of game to give the japanese a better view of FPS games.

Pay attention to Mirrors Edge, Kojima.

Its not cool to typecast creators only on their previous work. I do hope Kojima distances himself from MGS for a while though.

MGS was half shooter, maybe more, so he's shown interest already. You can call out the haters in some effort to diffuse their rantings, but I see a lot of lovers here who are unwilling to address any MGS concerns as well. The controls were solid, but not brilliant in any way, pretty much industry accepted standards. I don't know how you could love MGS4 but hate FPS without conflicting feelings there. There were considerable chunks of the game that required run and gun or stop and pop by way of design. MGS4 wasn't as nearly as bad as some of you believe, but it also wasn't nearly as good as some others of you believe, and I think a lot of people need to get over it.

Uther, I knew that Kojima made Zone of the Enders. I'm not saying that he's going to make a game that's the FPS equivalent to MGS, but Zone of the Enders was good. He also made Policenauts, which was pretty ridiculous.

All I'm saying is that Kojima wouldn't make a derivative first person shooter.

Now, if your comment wasn't directed at me, then carry on.. Haha.
