Rumortoid: June is the month of in-game XMB? photo

It's still a rumor at this point, but the mighty Internet has been not so quietly rumbling about something called in-game XMB, and its connection to every firmware update the PS3 has ever had. Did you actually think that this one would be any different?

The latest word on the street has it that firmware update version 2.40 is the magic number -- and we can expect it as soon as June. According to sources quoted by IGN, that universal friend's list, trophies, and in-game messaging that PS3 owners have been jonesing over since the console was first released, will soon be a reality.

Keep in mind that we've all been down this road many times before, so keep your enthusiasm to a minimum until something concrete is announced by Sony. However, we invite you to think about the timing of this whole thing. With Metal Gear Solid 4's June release date -- Could you think of a better time than now for Sony to step up to the plate deliver a nice two-pronged attack? We can't either.

[Thanks, Adam]

I will believe in the in-game XMB once it's there.

Nah.

In-game XMB is just a made-up marketing tool to push out more PS3s. It's the truth. I'm an expert at these sorts of things.

@Tubatic: Cross Media Bar. that menu system when you boot up your PS3. for the XBox 360, you can always bring it up (even in the middle of the game) using the shiny silver button. currently, in the PS3, you cannot...which kind of sucks.

It's the Cross Media Bar.

We're all anxious cause communication on the PS3 is pretty frustrating. If I'm playing a game and y0j1mb0 sends me an orgy invite I can't politely decline without quitting the game. Hence all the excitement about in-game XMB.

It's coming. Either before or on the day MGS4 arrives. Believe.

Now we will have PS3 trophy whores...

It's also worth mentioning that some games do have in-game XMB(to a degree). I can message people from Hot Shots golf, but only when I'm in the online lobby.

Not going to get excited till it actually happens...I really miss my gamerscore from when I had a 360. Dunno why but theres something juicy about dragging 1000pts out of a game. Hopefully Sony's variation will have a similar feel.

Custom soundtrack loss ruined me on Tiger Woods now that I have a ps3. I used to kick back on a sat. and listen to my music collection while playing some golf on my 360.

Trophies and Music arn't essentials like communication is, however they remain something I sorely miss from my previous console.

My question is, will they eventually give me my points (sorry) trophies, for Drakes / Heavenly Sword / Lair / Assassins / Gta4 etc etc...?

Skeptical, but if Sony can do this now, they'd be morons not to.

Not going to happen.

Or to put it another way, if it does happen, I'll start shitting out Home Open Beta keys.

Sweetness, if indeed the rumors turn out to be true then it will no doubt cause me and everyone else to become a trophy whore. I'm hoping that all games - GTA4, RFoM, UT3 and GH3 will have patches released so I can play through them once again

Lol, in game XMB.

Whats next, 360 blu-ray drives...oh wait...

Seriously though, I'd be more excited if home was given a hard release date. In game XMB would be a nice little tweak too though.

Like Naib said. There are a lot of games that have 'Partial in-game XMB'. If the developers can do it, Sony can do it too. I think Burnout was the first game to have that feature, which is a loooooong time ago. Pleasy hurry.

It'll definitely be nice to have these feature additions. To be honest though, I've been having a blast gaming on my PS3 anyway.
