Rumortoid: John Woo to announce Metroid film at NYC Comic-Con photo

Some random dude with a random blog on Game Reactor is reporting that John Woo is set to announce a Metroid film at next week's Comic-Con in New York City. The report also states that the film will star Bloodrayne actress Kristanna Loken, and is accompanied by a suspicious-looking grainy image of an "alleged" poster with the date "05.02.09" on it.

Everything from the source to the image points to this being a case of wishful thinking, but the John Woo connection is not completely out of the blue. The Hollywood Reporter ran a piece saying that Woo optioned the rights to bring Metroid to the big screen ... in 2004. Since then, there hasn't been a single Woo film to see release, but he did oversee production and directorial duties on a videogame, Midway's Stranglehold. His first feature-length film in five years, Red Cliff -- a movie about the Three Kingdoms period in ancient China -- is scheduled to hit theaters this year.

While this rumor may have zero merit, it's a good opportunity to open up the floor -- tell us about your dream Metroid film. Who would it star? Who would direct? Would it be live-action or CG? We're dying to know.

Could be good IF (1) there's a plot worth a shit obviously, (2) as said no love interest, (3) Kristanna Loken dies and is replaced, (4) the atmosphere is right which is hard for alot of sci-fi films, and finally it doesn't take or add too much to what we already know about the Metroid universe.

Oh and isn't Samus a redhead? Lately she's been depicted as a blonde. I remember beating Metroid and thinking "Damn frizzy red hair."

NO.

If it's a Jon Woo film it'll just have a bunch of fucking doves flying around and Samus in her Zero suit saying stuff like "I've got to make this happen! For what it's worth!!"

FUCK THAT.

Only way it'll be good:

1.) I direct it.
2.) Stan Winston creatures (not CG)
3.) Dialogue in the first 10 minutes - the rest is just a Super Metroid speed run.
4.) Daryl Hannah as Samus.

Luzer7072 said it best. Metroid would be a terrible movie by its very nature; and a spin on it would break what I loved about Metroid (I hated Corruption for being blatantly inspired by Halo). No Metroid movie. And Uma Thurman as Samus makes me throw up (I don't find Uma attractive at all).

I honestly would like to Hayden Panettiere as Samus (after putting her through some boot camp to get her a muscular/fit figure); she'd be about the same age as Samus in Zero Mission. Rawr.

With the way Hollywood makes similarly themed movies around the same time (Bus Life/Ants, Deep impact/Armageddon, 6th Sense/Stir of echoes)I could see this getting made now to contrast Iron Man.

Also I could see casting Milla Jovovich.

P.S. Charlize Theron for Samus.

^^^ master system??? wat?

Luzer and Kaikara definitely said it best. BUT, I think Luzer's idea: "I suppose it would be great if there were no dialouge, and no other human characters, and the movie was entirely focused on her exploring a massive world to locate an evil abomination",

would make for a stunning and beautiful art film. It could be all suspense and quiet build ups to intense action scenes, with no dialogue or even any monologues from her. Also, she'd have to be in her suit for the _entire_ movie, until the very end when she takes off her helmet after making her escape. Something like that might properly capture Metroid.

Kristanna Loken is a big no no. She's an awful actress and mostly gets roles based on the fact that she's very willing to get naked for the camera.

MY GOD, NOT UMA THURMAN.

I swear, every time I see her in a movie, I hate her part. I really, REALLY don't like her as an actress.

If Uma Thuman's pugnosed snotface is the force behind Samus' visor, count me out.

John Woo, I like. Bloodrayne. Ehhhh.

I think the key to watching video game films is to watch them objectively, and not focus so much on the source material.

Even then they usually suck, but we'll see.

luzer7072 pretty much said exactly what I wanted to. Seriously, that's almost exactly what I was going to suggest. I'm all for an arty, dialogue-free trek throgh a planet. Only voice I want to hear is Samus breathing heavily and grunting, like in the games. No idea for a director. Perhaps Jean-Pierre Jeunet, since he and Marc Caro have a great visual directing style. As for actresses, I nominate Gemma Atkinson. Compare:

Complete and utter no to Uma Thurman. Kristanna Loken would be fine, actually. See, in my dream Metroid film, great Shakespearean play acting skills are unnecessary, as there is no dialogue to deliver stilted. All that's necessary is a fit body that'll be able to handle running around in the armor, and look great in a bikini or zero suit at the end of the film. Gemma, as pictured above, is in great shape and I think resembles Samus pretty well.

But really, I just want there to be more Gemma in the world.

...who gets a +3 for having already been in Assassin's Creed.
