Rumortoid: John Woo to announce Metroid film at NYC Comic-Con photo

Some random dude with a random blog on Game Reactor is reporting that John Woo is set to announce a Metroid film at next week's Comic-Con in New York City. The report also states that the film will star Bloodrayne actress Kristanna Loken, and is accompanied by a suspicious-looking grainy image of an "alleged" poster with the date "05.02.09" on it.

Everything from the source to the image points to this being a case of wishful thinking, but the John Woo connection is not completely out of the blue. The Hollywood Reporter ran a piece saying that Woo optioned the rights to bring Metroid to the big screen ... in 2004. Since then, there hasn't been a single Woo film to see release, but he did oversee production and directorial duties on a videogame, Midway's Stranglehold. His first feature-length film in five years, Red Cliff -- a movie about the Three Kingdoms period in ancient China -- is scheduled to hit theaters this year.

While this rumor may have zero merit, it's a good opportunity to open up the floor -- tell us about your dream Metroid film. Who would it star? Who would direct? Would it be live-action or CG? We're dying to know.

Only thing that I can say is there better be some Ridley, some threat to the universe and the Galactic Federation fails to defend it, and it's up to Samus to take it out.

Although knowing video game movies Samus will be turned into a blond bimbo, there won't be any game references whatsoever and the film will be shit.

That is, if it's even in the works.

I'm not sure how ell this will work. I loved how almost nothing was explained in Metroid, Metroid 2 and Super Metroid. To much exposition and story is one of the main problems I have with the newer Metroid games.

Seriously? They think Bloodrayne can pull off the part? Listen, Hollywood, you can ruin the gayest franchise ever if you want to, but ruin Samus, ruin Metroid, and prepare to be fed to yourselves.

I'd like to see a sci-fi drama, maybe along the lines of Gattica. Would anyone go see a game-based movie that wasn't in the action genre?

Professor Pew, I didn't really get it from there, I saw someone else with it as their avatar and I used it. Was only meant to be temporary until I figured something else to put there, but I got rather lazy and haven't thought of something else to put there yet. Besides that, the Slowpoke of War is pretty damm badass

On topic, I reiterate my previous statements, although a movie explaining when Adam Malkovich was her CO would be interesting. Bonus points for people who know what I'm talking about.

I am probably the biggest Metroid fan you will meet and I can tell you now that this movie will fail.... majorly. Not ONE movie based off of a game (Mario Bros is an expection) has been good.

This will be a flop just like every other movie based off of a video game.

I do not have good expectations for this at all. I really hope they prove me wrong

@superflossy: TRUE DAT!
I think the film would look cool if they pulled a 300 on it, but Samus' ship, at least the interior, would have to be constructed.

John Woo? I'll take it. Kristanna Loken? I suppose she's all right. Bloodrayne kind of tainted my opinion of her, but I suppose that wasn't really her fault. She was good in T3, for the most part. I do second superflossy's vote for Katee Sackhoff. She'd be perfect!

Oh Comic Con, how you always announce movies I'd be dying to see.
First you announced Iron Man for 05/02/08,
now Metroid for 05/02/09 (allegedly)?
That must be like a super date for movies dealing with awesome power suits.

My dream Metroid movie would be one that would never exist. Metroid makes for a great videogame, but I fear it would translate poorly to the big screen. Aside from Samus, are there even any other human characters (not counting the characters in Corruption, who were pretty much just props anyway)? I suppose it would be great if there were no dialouge, and no other human characters, and the movie was entirely focused on her exploring a massive world to locate an evil abomination, but wouldn't that defeat the purpose of making it a movie? That is, assuming that the purpose of the movie would be to generate interest in Metroid or introduce others to Metroid who otherwise wouldn't know what it was. Otherise, I agree with Teen Idol, the idea of this makes me think Doom. And that is most certainly not a good thing.

DO NOT WANT. Metroid is not about detailed character interaction and heavy storyline, in fact one of the main themes is loneliness -the feeling your the only girl (human) on the world. This is why Super Metroid is still the best game in the series, followed by MP (imo). MP2 and 3 relied to heavily on story elements, that destroyed that illusion. One game that should NOT be made into a film.
