Rumortoid: Is Kid Icarus making a comeback on the Wii? photo

When Factor 5's president confirmed to IGN the other week that they were reuniting with Nintendo at least long enough to produce a non-Virtual Console title, more than a few ears perked up. Although quizzed up and down for more juicy details, Julian Eggebrecht was tight-lipped. Guess that was sort of expected... just enough to get us interested and wanting more.

What would the mystery title be? According to gaming site Kombo, who credits "a reliable source," the title in question is none other than a Kid Icarus game for the Wii -- and get this, built from the ground up, specically for it. Since nothing has been confirmed at this time (yes, the same old song and dance), we have to file this under the "rumors with great potential" category.

After the lukewarm reception that Factor 5 received with LAIR, this seems like an excellent way to right a few wrongs in the eyes of gamers, who have been clamoring for a new Kid Icarus game for what seems like ages. Since the Wii shares a few things under the hood with another member of the family -- the GameCube -- and knowing that Factor 5 is no stranger to creating hit games for that platform, they should (theoretically) be able to hit this one out of the park. Drop whatever else that you're doing F5, and make it happen. The fans will love you for it.

[Thanks, Madninja]

I wonder if this is the game that that this blog was about?

@Aerox

Judging by Ron's response (who can see the details of those who sign in here), I'd say no to that one.

They could be using Brawl as an advertisement like they did with Marth and Roy

They fucking better. not just factor 5, if their new game isn't kid icarus, someone better make one. Look at what SSBM did for Fire Emblem, after that HEY we started getting those games in North America and Europe, so hopefully SSBB can revive Kid Icarus, which if done correctly could probably join the ranks of the Nintendo elite (Mario, Zelda, Metroid)

That'd be pretty sweet. Will the rumor turn into reality? Only time will tell.

I'd rather some one else make it, but this is better than nothing.

I don't know if I trust Factor 5 anymore. I would love it if Retro took the reins on this one.

Judging by Factor 5's past experiences with nintendo I say this is a good thing. Finally a third party developer will make a fantastic looking game

With any luck we'll get a new kickass 2D game for the DS to coincide with a likely botched 3D remake for the Wii...

Hopefully Nintendo will keep a close enough eye on it to help it not suck.

It always strikes me as amusing whenever there's a mysterious new Nintendo game being announced, and everybody automatically assumes "OMFG KID ICARUS!" because of one unidentified source. Remember the "Capcom Five" for the Gamecube?

I'm not getting my hopes up. >.>

OMGYAY! I was hoping ever since that they announced Pit on Brawl, that they would actually make a game of Kid Icarus for the Wii (or at least the DS). This is like a dream come true!!

omg omg pwnies and unicorns! This rumor that probably is being read too much into will undoubtedly result in the greatest game ever, which of course means a highly anticipated but slightly less well received sequel, and then the third one will suck crap, of course. Then there will be the movie, with Shia LeBouf as KI, which of course is just SO WRONG. WTF?!?!?!!!?!!!!?!{{:;

Fuck you F5 and Nintendo for ruining my life for me. I'm giving my Wii to the local retirement home and building a MAME cabinet.

@SWE3tMadness.

It's not something that can be helped. I know there's only a very slim chance this will happen, but I can't help getting excited. It's probably the same for most of the people here. I just love games that much.

I have mixed feelings about this one personally. I love the idea of Factor 5 making a game. I don't want this one to be it. I want a new Ip from them.

Plus I personally want factor five to do something that doesn't involve flying, but that is what they are good at then If I was Nintendo I would rather see Star Fox or something like that if that's possible.

Instead of Kid Icarus.. I am not sure I would want retro to handle it. I want something different from them too. I would want to see what Monlith could do with the franchise. I am sure Disaster Day of crisis is done by now!!

Plus if this game is a hit can factor 5 still continue to make it, even though they still have a contract with Sony?

I do not want factor 5 going anywhere near Kid Icarus, Nintendo are the only developers who would do that character any justice. I just don't think Factor 5 have the imagination or versatility to handle something like a brand new Kid Icarus game for Wii. It's not just a case of a graphical step up wrapped around last gen gameplay.

Most developers simply don't get the Wii, and I include Factor 5 amongst those who don't.

Nintendo have just finished Mario galaxy, Factor 5 have just finished Lair. No more needs to be said.

This is a bit of a double-edged sword, IMO. Part of me wonders if there's something wrong with the current state of the gaming industry, if they have to keep revisiting and remaking old franchises, instead of coming up with more new, quality ones.

On the other hand, this retro revival is freaking sweet. I'd love Kid Icarus, or Megaman.

Knowing the kind of games Factor 5 usually make, it'll be a third person flight shooter with Icarus instead of a dragon or an X-Wing. :-/

But still, it's good to see old IPs come back. Now, what about new ones, Nintendo? What, Project HAMMER was too much for you??

Meh. I thought the Kid Icarus games sucked and quite frankly can't understand why they're held in such high regard, so aside from the "references" to Greek Mythology I couldn't care less. :p

I think it could be

this could be the next system selling franchise if done right

but if its just a flight shooter on rails with weak story and having you crazily shaking the nunchuck for flight while you aim with the wiimote to shoot then they should pass

The only people outside of Nintendo themselves who I would trust to make a Kid Icarus sequel is Retro. Factor 5 should stick to what they are good at and make a new Star Fox or something.

Meh.

Kid Icarus was a broken game in several senses; besides the fact that is was glitchy, even for an NES game, the difficulty made getting some of the powerups necessary to make it through the harder levels impossible to get. And don't get me started on those FUCKING dungeons, those FUCKING wizards, or that one FUCKING BOSS that could walk through the left wall and warp back on the right because the programmers couldn't be assed to add proper collision. After making it through that hellhole of a dungeon, I expect a fair fight.

It was a good idea, but executed poorly. Seeing Factor5's past experience with waggle worries me more.

This would be great. I hope they look a bit at Capcom's canceled Dead Phoenix, which definitely drew a little inspiration from Nintendo's neglected franchise.

I'm sure an all-new, high-budget, high-concept Kid Icarus game is just around the corner. After all, remember when the Ice Climbers' popularity rose after their Mêlée outing and they got a whole spin-off franchise?

No? They didn't? Well, there you go, then.

And no, I won't spell it "Melee". Except as an example of how I won't be spelling it.

If you go by these stupid rumors, then by that logic, Mother 3 will be flying stateside with arms wide open. I want Mother 3 just as much as the Earthbound crackheads, but it ain't happening people. Just like this.

Now if this hidden project was to be *COUGHPROJECTHAMMERCOUGH* something original, then that would be devilishly delightful.
