Rumortoid: Harmonix welcomes wife beating tunes, future DLC to be country themed photo

If the enthusiasts on Rock Band’s official message boards are to be believed, it appears as though a future set of downloadable content for the rhythm game is set to be country music. Apparently, a report from CMT this Saturday confirmed that Harmonix would be whipping up some knee-slapping, backwater sound at some point this December.

A developer who works for Harmonix tried to put out the fire, but didn’t do so great of a job. He told the masses on the forums that “[Harmonix] haven’t shut the door on anything” in regards to representing different genres of music in the form of DLC.

The developer’s statement makes me all giddy inside. Not because I may be rocking to some Alan Jackson in a few months, but because it sounds like the door is still open for some wumpscut tunes. Make that happen, Harmonix.

The obligatory "DO NOT WANT" seems so insufficient in this case.

Maybe, just maybe this will get my girlfriend to finally play with me.

Then play Rock Band afterward.

No. No, no, no, no, no. This can't be possible. Any reality where Harmonix releases a country themed DLC package is a reality I don't want to be a part of. I can take the new-aged scream-o music Harmonix, but please, anything but country.

Grow up people. And give me some Cash, any of the Hanks, or some Nelson.

No, I say go for it. It's money. So long as they're planning on keeping the lines separate, there's no reason why.

I'm not a country fan myself, but there's Karaoke Revolution for Country, so why not Rock Band.

I don't have a problem with it. It's not as if I love everything they put out each week; this would just be something else I would pass up on. If it doesn't sell well, they'll stop the experiment, and if it does, it means people are getting music they want. Seems okay to me.

I'm torn, because I've bought nearly all the DLC so far, and then...they announce this...and I'm going to have to really force myself to buy it if it's anything other than Johnny Cash.

What I'm more interested in is this information included in the original quote from the Harmonix rep:

"Ideally we'll have all the various subgenres that people are clamoring for (hardcore punk, goth, ska, etc) eventually. We haven't shut the door on anything."

If we have to deal with some country to get some ska and other new subgenres, I won't complain.

@nukka jdav:

You teacher is right in the sense that country is derived from folk and rock is derived from jazz, but you can't deny that there has been a lot of crossover music that qualifies. Hell, some of the Eagles' songs easily qualify as "country rock", like Take It Easy.

Anyway, Guitar Hero would be far more welcoming to country DLC than Rock Band just based on the name of the game. But what's next? Fiddle Hero?? :)

Depends on the ska bands... Ska-punk would fit accordingly, but 2Tone... eh.

I wouldn't mind.

The (rock) Band I play in has a vocalist who's from the south.
The more songs there are that she can rock out to in her native language the better our scores.

If they want to make a separate country themed game (ala that Country Karaoke Revolution) I don't mind, but PLEASE don't clog up the DLC days with this shit.

Like a lot of you, I don't have a problem with a little Johnny Cash now and then but you know it's going to be more like Toby Keith-ish/Big and Rich type bullshit radio country. God that shit is horrible (I would know).

I hope its at least somewhat old and relevant to music in general.

Example = Johnny Cash

I'd buy that in a heartbeat.

I can see someone saying they don't want this stuff in the game -- hell, neither do I really (not a fan of the music, doesn't interest me). But to come out and say they SHOULDN'T include it, especially when it comes to DLC, is silly.

I buy tons of DLC myself, but I'm not FORCED to buy it all. I buy a lot of stuff I wouldn't listen to outside of the game (but think would be fun to play), but I have discretion. I didn't buy the Jimmy Buffet pack because I don't like Jimmy Buffet; I think they're effin' crazy, but people do and they call themselves Parrot Heads for eff's sake. So they got some DLC they're really excited about -- good for them.

So one week they release some Brooks and Dunn; I take a pass, you buy it. The next week, they drop -- oh, I don't know -- Dillinger Escape Plan's entire debut record; I buy it, you don't. We all win. Why anyone would be against Harmonix (or Activision with GH) broadening the genres and music styles in the game puzzles me. It would be great if everyone week HMX dropped your favorite songs as DLC, but it's not going to happen, so get used to it.

Speaking of which, I wonder which Harmonix/MTV employee is going to come to my house with a gun and force me to buy the AC/DC disc I'm not sure I want to buy.

I Third this motion of DEP in Rock Band. Although I'd prefer an album with Chris Penne drumming.

I live in Georgia. I know lots of Rock Band players who would be downright giddy at this information. I can't wait to tell Cletus and Mary-Sue.

That said, I'm still waiting for some ska.

Country will be fun to sing in the same kitschy way those German and Japanese songs...good to see more genres! Bring on the blues, jazz, hip hop, soul, prog, even some classical would be interesting!

Rock Band 2 is badass, enough to pull me away from my early contraband copy of LBP!

If they put "Low Places" by Garth Brooks up there, my drunken Rock Band sessions with my friends will be all the more appropriate.

On a separate note, what's the big deal if they do? I'm not a huge fan of country music myself (although there are a number of songs I like), but as Mr. Chester points out, it's not like you are forced to buy it.

Now where are my Led Zeppelin and Chevelle tracks Harmonix???

Eh. All the country music I actually enjoy is the older stuff that drew more from folk music, bluegrass, and "white blues." The modern stuff is more rock and less substance.

Though any Cash is good by my standards.
