Rumortoid: Hard Rock Van Halen, Guitar Hero 5, Band Hero in 2009 photo

If you thought that Activision was taking this whole "hero" business a bit far, wait until you get a load of this ...

A source close to the publisher tells Eurogamer that beyond what's already been revealed for 2009, you can also expect the following (take a deep breath): Hard Rock Van Halen in August; Guitar Hero 5 in September; DJ Hero in October; and Band Hero in November. Yes, that's four music games within four months, all planned for release on the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Wii, and PlayStation 2.

Our own separate sources indicated to us a few months ago that a Van Halen music game that leverages the existing Guitar Hero set up was already in the works. Additionally, we've heard word that this alleged Guitar Hero 5 is already well into production, and unsurprisingly has striking similarities to Guitar Hero World Tour (read: new venues, new songs, identical game engine).

But Band Hero, although trademarked by Activision awhile back, is a curious one. How that will be different from the Guitar Hero four-instrument set up remains to be seen. Keyboards? Trumpets? A kazoo? The mind reels.

Band Hero = $200 worth of marching band peripherals!

Trumpet
Flute
Trombone
Tuba
Saxophone
Bass drum
and of course, quad drums

Ladies love the quads.

If I'm right, I'm buying it, day one and doing a review.
Either that, or I'll write a lamentful C-Blog when i buy the tuba seperately...

Hooray for (more than) yearly exploitation of popular titles! You won't kill all interest by flooding the market, Activision, I promise!

Harmonix didn't know what they were unleashing when Activision signed up the GH Frsnchise.

I'm calling bullshit on two separate Guitar Hero and Band Hero games. That it's not named Guitar Hero: Van Halen (and that we haven't heard a thing about it yet) says to me that Van Halen will be more of a track pack than a full game. Guitar Hero 5 (World Tour 2, I imagine) definitely. DJ Hero is coming, we all know.

I'm fine with them making all their rhythm games "Hero" games, but Band Hero sounds too much like a Rock Band/Guitar Hero type thing. It would have to be a completely different kind of game to differentiate it from the Guitar Hero games.

Hooray! $60 for the same game with new songs. Fuck you, Activision. I don't like the Beatles, but I'll gladly buy that instead of any of this bullshit.

I bet you none of the songs in those Guitar Hero expansions will export to the main game.

Activision is choking the music game genre with its bullshit. The only thing it has published so far is the Call of Duty series.

@TheTaj 100% true

I can't wait until this cash cow has been milked dry. Seriously though, four frickin' games, that are basically the same? Why Activision, why do you keep me from wanting to buy your shit, with bs like this? I'd lean towards Harmonix, but then again I recall them working on something for the psp. That scares me...

What the fuck is the difference between band hero and guitar hero? If they're naming it guitar hero 5 then that would assume World Tour is 4 but world tour is also the whole band so what the fuck is the point of band hero?

god damn it, fuck you activision.

Is it just me, or is the music game already going out of style?

I mean, don't get me wrong, I still boot up Rock Band with friends and play new DLC almost every time, but Activision is definitely going to put the nail in the coffin this Fall.

I hope that for Harmonix new release in a year or two, they actually have some INNOVATIVE features, something that we've been asking for since forever.

I guess Activision didn't learn its lesson with Tony Hawk when Skate beat its ass down. EA isn't as bad as it used to be with popping out sequels everyyear like Activision. I'm really glad Harmonix is taking it easy this year with Beatles:Rock Band and not a full fledged sequel cause do we really need a another Rock Band this on top of all the crap Activision is putting out. the Music game genre is going to rise before it busts and I'll give it another year before everyone hates music games.
