Rumortoid: GTA IV episode to be released as boxed product for $20? photo

Rockstar recently revealed its new Grand Theft Auto IV downloadable episode, The Lost and Damned, and there is a rumor that the expansion will not just be available via the Xbox Live Marketplace.

Priced at $20, a boxed "version" of the episode is currently listed by GameStop. According to the listing, The Lost and Damned will include a 2-sided poster and "an Xbox LIVE Marketplace token card. The token card will contain a unique code to purchase The Lost and Damned over the Xbox LIVE Marketplace."

How interesting. Choose to use GameStop as a bizarre middle man, and get a poster. Does that sound like a tempting enough deal for you at twenty bucks, or will you just stick with the convenience of the Marketplace? That is, if you can even get it without this weird code.

As long as people continue to pay for DLC, gamers will continue to get raped for content they should be getting for free.

That's just pointless on a new level. This still won't be of any use to those people not hooked up to Live, and everyone who is hooked up won't waste time trecking down to the shops when they can do it in seconds from their console.

As long as the box version is the same price as the marketplace price, I don't see a problem with it.

However, $20 is so expensive. Does anyone really feel like spending $80 for GTAIV?

I didn't even like GTAIV. I can't see me spending the 20 bucks on it.

If the content was on a disc, I'd consider it. Buying a code in a box instead of jut buying it online is just retarded.

I agree with Grimspoon. While I'm not a huge fan of DLC and may end up passing on this one, it would make more sense for it to be a separate disc that can be used by those who do not use LIVE, or just don't feel like purchasing the DLC through it.

A redeemable code and a poster for $20? Kinda stupid.

Could this mean it was coming to PS3 as well?

That's odd. If the boxed version included The Lost and Damned on a disc copy I would definitely choose it over a Marketplace purchase. But for nothing more than the thrill of tearing apart packaging to get a "token card" and poster I'll pass. My room is nerdy enough without more game posters to attack my chances of getting laid.

gotta say that picking this up as a hard copy probably would be my preffered model...if i owned GTA4

Better be some substantial additions to the game for $20. Still got my copy but I can't see myself paying that much for a couple of new vehicles, some extra multiplayer stuff (which will be pointless if it doesn't sell) and some new voice work.

Well if I had GTAIV for the 360 I would buy this, as my card isn't accepted by xbox live. I have to go out and buy points cards any ways, if I can get a poster in the bargain then why the hell not. Unfortuantly I have the PS3 version and I rarely play it so theres no point at the moment.

This is a brilliant idea and I've been saying DLC folks should be doing it for ages. The reality is, a lot of people wh are purchasing this stuff (moms, kids, etc) just aren't mobilized to buy stuff on Marketplace. It's easy, yeah, MS has done a good job of making it easy, but still, some people just aren't aware. Selling in the store, with some collectible crap to make it "worth it" will mean these people see the DLC when they go to the mall, and they'll probably have the most successful 360 add-on (i can't call it DLC anymore, i guess) due to it. Good for them.

Re: DLC should be free, fuck whoever said that. DLC means hardcore fans of 1 game pay more to offset the costs for those who just want the main game and nothing more. Nobody would fucknig complain if this came only in a "special edition" of the game that costs $10 more, but when it's $10 DLC they get their panties in a bunch.

Also grinds my gears: "Beautiful Katamari is like half DLC already on the disc, waaahhhh." Well, that game was also like $40 new. If you wanted the rest, you paid the full $60. It was modular pricing for a retail video game and that's awesome.

If it is boxed does that mean they might release a PS3 version also?

The box is a lie: its not the disc, its a download code. Its a brilliany way to confuse people into figuring out how to connect heir Xbox to the internet.

Also, if they put it on a disc and called it an expansion pack, no one would complain about it as "DLC"

It's a skip for me then, don't like GTAIV all that much. But had it been on a disc for 20 I would have bought it.
I'm not a big DLC guy. I hate that stuff.

What the fuck are you on about? They're giving you a huge new storyline for 20 bucks and your complaining? Why the hell would they give this away for free. If you had psent six or seven months creating a mod, hiring professional voice actors, creating new artwork etc etc, would YOU give it away for free? Give me a break.

I'm pumped but why the fuck GameStop? I'm sure it will be available on the Marketplace for download without whatever shit GameStop is offering.

if you are going through the trouble of making a box and poster why not just put it on a disc? It would make everyone happier anyways since you would get a physical game backup

The TF2 updates are a much smaller scale.
This is more like the Half-Life episodes, which Valve do charge for.

I'm not liking the idea of selling codes for a DLC in a retail store. They might as well just sell it in a disc. Although they would have to put in more than just one episode (depending on how big this expansion is). Being a GTA IV fanboy and all that, I'd be more than happy to buy a code with a poster in it for $20.

...

Now I just need to find a GameStop in Canada...

@cartman08: Updates? Your best argument is an update? Updates are ALWAYS free! This is an entirely new storyline we're talking about here! Hours of gameplay! What age are you? Like 16?

They sell MS Points and Live subscriptions in stores for the same price as online also. I don't see the big deal.

This actually is a pretty smart move... There's a lot of 360 owners who never bother with DLC/XBLA, and this is a sneaky way to inform them about the GTA IV add-on while getting them to sign up for Live.

This is a good idea for some folks though. A lot of people i know either dont have credit cards or dont feel comfortable linking their bank accounts over the internet (yep some people are old timers like that)

Or if you really think of it, the whole idea of it being in a box makes the $20 DLC an attractive gift to easily wrap and put under the x-mas tree/birthday/ect. rather than hassle with creditcards and Xbox live, completly seperate from the ability to watch somone recive the gift.
