Rumortoid: Google TV coming to PS3 photo

I don't know about this rumor. It would be nice, but Google TV's whole thing is that it controls your cable box with fancypants video passthru and IR control, giving you the ability to search and watch both web and television content through their software. Still, there are rumors that Google TV could be coming to the PS3 in Spring of 2011.

Sony already has a relationship with Google, which was made clear with their newly released Google TVs and and settop Blu-ray box. We're with Tom's Guide in the hopes that Google TV would bring apps to the PlayStation 3 in one huge bundle including YouTube, Facebook, Last.fm, Twitter and others. I'd also love to see Google's Chrome replace the broken PS3 browser. I don't know how the searchable television functions would work without a HDMI passthru video port, though. Maybe they could offer some kind of upgrade box.

Nothing sounds very solid at this point. While it would be nice, I don't know how they could pull this off.

Sometimes these rumors come true on a followup device. Maybe we'll see it on the next Playstation console.

Well this would be neat.

PS - Anyone know when the Hulu Plus app is supposed to hit for us non PS+ users? I checked this weekend and didn't see it yet.

Not true for one reason. Google TV is open source, easily Hackable basically. PS3, sony likes to keep it 100% unhackable. Put 2+2 together and there's your answer.

Open source doesn't mean hackable. Linux is open source and just about any distro is vastly more secure than OSX. Besides, I doubt that Sony would grant Google TV high enough privileges to launch new applications. It's about as likely as someone using Home to run unsigned code.

Meh... probably won't work for Canadians. Like everything else related to movies, TV, video.. our content carriers won't allow for much in the way of content.
Still, from what I've read, I can definitely see the PS3 as being a device for Google TV given the recent partnership and the need for an intermediate internet carrier to be hooked up to the TV as most people still don't have those fancy new internet enabled TV's yet.

@Daniel Hart Actually bringing the Google TV to the PS3 would be a reasonably good idea for Sony. Arguably good enough that they could see the reason to do it. The PS3 is a pretty solid media center without any hacks. I already use it to stream media from my Macbook to my TV cordlessly, Netflix is pretty solid, the Blu-Ray functionality is nice as well (though it's just a nice HD so whatever).

Sony's big ad campaign is that the PS3 "Only does everything" they're trying to bring it to the living room as your central device and adding Google TV would fill a nice part of that gap for PS3 owners who don't have cable. It might even be tempting enough that we would be willing to put some money towards it provided it satisfied our needs.

Sadly, you speak the truth.

Canada is horrible for that kind of stuff and I will not spend $120 a month for "cable" only to find out that hey, there is still nothing on. If they do bring it to Canada back it up with content that is not 2+ years old like Netflix.

Make it free and I'm all for it. But watch this be exclusive to Europe -- I'm still waiting for that TiVO-esque device, the PlayTV.

@nic

I'm using Chrome on Vista, and the page looks fine. (Well, I'm using Iron, the Chrome-without-Google's-bullshit-spy-tactics browser.)

@nic and Dtoid Higher Ups,

I'm getting a lot of overlapping sidebar action on Chrome since the switchback.

Both the "Community Blogs" section and the "Reviews" section are overlapping the comments (and stories) on the left side of the divider when they should be on the right side. Oh, and apparently, the "Staff" sidebar is doing it as well.

This would be great, and I agree, a Chrome replacement of PS3's browser would be awesome, if I was them I'd keep the UI of the browser as it's not bad for consoles and try and incorporate back-end Chrome stuff like Chromes renderer a la how you can add that as a plugin to IE.

Hmmm do I really want/need this? No.

Will I try it if it releases? Sure.

Do I actually care about it? Not really.

Am I the only person out there that thinks the PS3's browser is OK?

Yes, it takes all the buttons on the Sixaxis to control, but it does the job, plus I can print stuff to my wireless printer off it.

We have play TV for PS3 in the UK, a small add on box that turns your PS3 into a HD TV recorder, watcher, upscaler. I could easily see that being augmented to become Google TV.

This would be EXCELLENT.

@elsa, @mix

I feel your pain. I hadn't had cable for the last 4 years, then got it going again for the olympics and world cup... I think I turned it on 3 times in the entire year... at least we FINALLY got netflix, and it's getting more content all the time... too bad the new ps3 layout is god awful...
