Rumortoid: Final Fantasy VII to XBLA and PSN? photo

The rumors of a (perhaps inevitable) Final Fantasy VII remake hitting the PlayStation 3 refuse to die, being given even more life thanks to Square-Enix's promise of a "major FFVII announcement" at its upcoming DKΣ3713 shindig. Further to this is a new rumor surfacing about the original version of VII being ported to Xbox Live Arcade and the PlayStation Network.

This rumored port will be the original game, and is supposedly arriving under the PSN's "PS1 downloadable classics" banner, along with the XBLA version. The mysterious insider source (aren't they so convenient?) suggests that FFVII could arrive in downloadable form by the end of the year.

True? Who knows. Plausible? I wouldn't shoot it out of the sky on first sight. It certainly makes sense for FFVII to hit the PSN, but I must say that the idea of it visiting XBLA, perhaps with achievements, is interesting. Can we get a "Human Kebab -- Aeris Gets Skewered" for five points, please?

Although I'm not going to get my hopes up too much for this I must say that if Sev is commenting on this then it might just have some weight behind it.

Kinda confused on the XBLA version of FFVII since SCEA and SCEE own the publishing rights for pretty much anything FFVII related in the US and EU territories, but I could be a bit misinformed on that one.

Sev also mentioned a FFVII remake/add-on in the post too, but we'll just have to wait and see during their august event. Sev has been right on pretty much everything so far so I doubt he'd stick his neck out this far and it turn out to be a dud.

I heard this rumor earlier today, but where I read it, it said there was going to be a FFVII remake on PS3. But it was also still a rumor, so don't hold your breath.

I would be surprised and pleased to see SquareEnix sell a game for download pricing when they can spiff up the graphics and charge more (see FFIII, IV; Dragon Quest IV, V, VI; Chrono Trigger.)

According to Shane Betenhausen from 1up on the latest 1up Yours podcast, the rumors he heard about this was that it was a big deal to fans of FF7, it was Advent Children related, and that it would be PS3 exclusive. That sounds like a remake of FF7 to me or maybe even possibly a new game that takes place after Advent Children's events.

But then again, Shane was convinced that Microsoft was going to debut a motion controller so you never know with his credibility.

Reissuing FFVII is a no brainer where ever it ends up but boy is that game uglee by today's standards. That's one game that hasn't aged well.

Meh...while it's cool that a release would mean that the two people out there that haven't played it can now enjoy it, I honestly have no desire to play-through it again. It's a great game, sure, but I'd rather play Chrono Trigger over FFVII (the Winter DS release cannot come soon enough...).

Not even sure I'd want to play a remake...I don't know, maybe because it wouldn't have the impact it did when I first played it? I've played the first one multiple times, but the 7th garnered only one play-through. I even took a year-long break before finishing it...just saved right before the final battle and went off to play something else.

With the announcement of Chrono Trigger DS, this seems all the more plausible. It seems that Square-Enix is finally realizing just how much money can be made from their old games.

Actually, FF7 without the jaggies and loads would be pretty nice. Who knows, maybe if they replaced the "chibi" field models with the battle models, I might buy it again just for the hell of it.

But that game needs a true remake. Fix all the graphical inconsistencies of the original, fine tune the battle system, voice acting, orchestral soundtrack, it'd all be good. Of all the FF's, 7 has aged the worst (aside from the original NES FF2; that game's just crap).

Which won't stop me from playing it again...

I think they are willing to do both the port and the remake for ps3.

Kinda like seeing what the market is like at the moment.

And for all you ps3 fanboys, don't hate, appreciate. This is coming from a PS and Xbox advocate.

Regardless, sounds neat a lot of people will be happy but will most likely still want an updated version with new graphics.

I think this might be Square "testing the waters" for a FF7 remake to see how popular it would be. Is there any thought to if this might be the single most downloaded network game released yet? It would be something to think about.

Anyhow. I would certainly add it to my collection!!

Well, Nintendo published Banjo Kazooie and look what happened to that (aka XBLA.) I think with old games its a matter of who owns the IP.

This game would need a serious graphical overhaul before I played it again. I know Colette would disagree, but I don't think this game aged well. 16-bit graphics are still beautiful in their simplicity, but the 3D character models in FFVII are extremely poor and without much charm.

Heck, I'd be fine with the same static backgrounds and CG sequences if Square improves the polygon count and textures on the 3D models. A widescreen, high def overhaul couldn't hurt either.

You can already play FF7 on your psp, as long as you own the PS1 discs you can play them over remote play.

On the 1up yours podcast they talked about their interview with some of the Squeenix guys in which they hinted out a big announcement to coincide with the Advent Children Blu-ray release in the next couple months.

Shane asked them about it another day because rumors swirled that it was an FF7 remake and Shane said something to the effect that "With the FFXIII announcement the pendulum of favor swung toward Microsoft, but with this announcement they pendulum swings back toward Sony."

I'm guessing PS3 gets FFVII announced exclusive, and if that's the case having the original come to the 360 seems like scraps.

They would really need to overall the graphics. The other week I played my PS1 copy through my PS3, through HDMI cables on an HDTV. It was not a pretty sight. The pixels were big enough to count.

I won't waste my money on a re-release. I'm not gonna re-buy shit I already have. It's like paying for a hooker again after you already blew her out y'kno. A remake sounds like it could be sexy though, maybe some new story, re-examined dialogue, maybe a new battle system (maybe), more shit in Gold Saucer. Yeah, good stuff.

@nilcam: They aren't even bothering updating the graphics on Chrono Trigger and people are still scooping that garbage up. They added a weak-ass multiplayer and touch screen functionality. It's a pathetic attempt (albeit successful) at making money off of a minimal amount of work. I'm not buyin that shit, I still have my original copy and a ROM on my PSP.

Unfortunately FFVII isn't the sort of game that would make an easy port to an HD standard, what with all the prerendered backgrounds and FMVs. Still, I'd buy it XBLA. I don't own a PS3 and can't connect my PS2 to my HD monitor that I use for gaming...

And if a remake is in the works, it better be JUST a remake. I can't say I care for anything original SE has been doing recently. Hell, the DS remakes aren't even coming off very favorably... Personally I'd opt for a text-only option. The charm of the original was due in part to the text dialogue. Has the world gotten too lazy to read?
