Rumortoid: Fandango or Monkey Island to be revived at E3? photo

LucasArts might have something deliciously retro to show at Electronic Entertainment Expo this year. Something, perhaps, Grog flavored.

A source recently revealed to us that LucasArts is planning to resurrect a classic franchise at E3. The million dollar question -- what series is it -- is unknown to our source. However, we do know that titles like Grim Fandango and Monkey Island were uttered within earshot as examples of a LucasArts' golden oldie.

File this away as rumor for right now. We contacted LucasArts and asked if they were planning to revive any classics and ultimately received a "no comment."

I hope not. Hate to put a damper on this but I don't believe any of the people capable of doing justice to these are currently working at Lucasarts anymore.

This would be great news 10 years ago, before the mediocrity train hit Lucasarts in the face. Let the disappointment begin.

I was thinking about that. But still, HYPE.

They still owe us Monkey Island 5. I haven't even played MI4 because of the terrible controls, though.

Yes. It's a lovely thought. Loved to see the MI2 cover image on dtoid, but I don't believe they have the ability. I really wish they did.

If the right people were involved this could be amazing. But they probably wouldn't be.

Just because the people that could be put to work on one of these are untested at best doesn't mean they will definitely put out a bad product. I say any work done on a Grim Fandango sequel is better than no work done.

I'd only say yes to a new Grim Fandango if Tim Schafer himself was involved- not to say that he was the only one working on it, mind you, but it was his original idea.

Grim Fandango, while truly fabulous, was completely self-contained. Any return to the Land of the Dead would only soil the original. The Monkey Island franchise on the other hand has already been soiled by too many sequels. Rape that one instead, if you really must.

Alternatively, another Maniac Mansion game would be swell.

I'm throwing my 2 cents in... I'm willing to bet a lot that it is Full Throttle 2. And I really, really hope that it is. That game was incredible. There had been rumors of a FT2 for years since the original, but nothing ever came to fruition (is that a word?)... Similar to the whole Starcraft 2 thing, which is now a sweet reality as well. But anyways, Full Throttle 2, that's my call.

I have absolutely no faith in the people that currently work at LucasArts, though I'd love to be proved wrong. That said, they could outsource this to people fans WOULD embrace. In the past decade or so, all the best Star Wars games have been made by developers independent of LucasArts. I could see that happening again here, with LA hiring an outside developer to work on the mystery property - someone like, say, Double Fine?

Do I have to remind you guys that Tim Schaferr was behind these and Tim has his own company now? I mean... it would be absolutely mind-blowing awesome but it doesn't sound very nice if it doesn't have the preoper direction.

Grim Fandango, I'd expect to appear on PSP.

To LucasArts Exec,

I have recently heard you may revive Monkey Island or Grim Fandango. The sad thing is, you guys currently suck, and the people who had anything to do with making these games currently have nothing to do with you. And, sadly no one BUT those people can make THOSE games. So, I please ask that you give the contracts for both games to Double Fine, Hothead Games or Telltale Games post haste, or give up the idea entirely.

Respectfully,
A Fan

OH SWEET JESUS LET THIS BE SO! Secret of Monkey Island is what got me into gaming and is still one of my favorite franchises of all time. That said, Grim Fandango may be my favorite adventure game of all time so good news either way. I am a little reticent of having someone besides Tim Schafer work on Grim Fandango though.

err no Schafer, no deal.

monkey island has run its course and as much as i want to play more grim fandango, i don't know if the story could be expanded any furthur.

i guess if the ninth underworld ended up being another land of the dead to be traversed it could open up a new avenue for the story, but even that's stretching it.

I doubt it, you can bet that if they are going to do it, it's going to be Star Wars, and probably not one of the series that really deserve to be revived like the X-Wing series, no it'll probably be something like Dark Forces or Racer or the Super Star Wars series on Arcade

That's really cool. Those are two games I really feel shamed to admit I've never played through. I really should, but feel like I "get it" after reading a few posts about the two games, so I can keep putting it off.

I would be fine with them releasing their old adventure games catalogue through GoG.com. I would gladly pay $5.99 for a copy of Grim Fandango.

Uh, no. These are absolute classics that have to be played to be appreciated.

I doubt you can find them anywhere though, so you're off the hook.

hate to join the naysayers, but unless this is some sort of graphic update, leave the classics alone.
however, someone mentioned the idea of a DS port, which has me proper giddy.

holy shit it would be awesome...in an ideal world where I drive a BMW Z4, Jessica Alba bakes me cookies and Ron Gilbert still gets his paycheck from LucasArts. IRL, I'd love to see it happen but am too scared of all that could go wrong.
