Rumortoid: DSi-exclusive retail games coming this fall photo

A new rumor is floating around the Internet that promises we'll be seeing the first hints of DSi-exclusive retail games very soon. According to a report from Kotaku, these games will only work on the DSi and will come in their own specially branded packaging, marking them as distinct from DS games that work on any system.

This has been something of an inevitability ever since it was announced. The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks was feared to be DSi-only when it launched, and there is a game in the works called Ghostwire that will require the DSi's camera in order to function. Those who decided to hold on to their DS and DS Lite devices will be locked out of the fun when these new games roll around.

So far, Nintendo is allowing the third parties to take the reins when it comes to DSi-exclusive titles. Despite what was said about Spirit Tracks, Nintendo has not yet officially announced that any of its first party games would require a DSi to work. I'm guessing Nintendo is using third parties to see how it works out, and if the numbers are good, you can expect to see Zelda and Mario go DSi-exclusive.

I call bullshit.
There is no reason for LoZ:ST to be a DSi exclusives. It doesn't use its features at all.

KvB:

It was never officially stated, and I don't think it will be. However, when it was first launched, there was strong feeling it would be, which is why the news of DSi-exclusive titles isn't surprising.

Goodness knows how often I've played the Mario & Luigi games and thought to myself, "This is fun, but it'd be even better if I could take pictures for some reason!"

It's inevitable, like Game Boy to Game Boy Color.

I don't think any Nintendo IP's like Zelda/Mario will ever go DSi exclusive, at least unless the new console ever phases out the older models completely. It just wouldn't be profitable for them.

I am however excited to see what kinds of things will appear on DSi only! Seeing what the new hardware can do to its full potential will be interesting.

I don't mind the odd game being a DSi exclusive. It's got a nifty little camera and mr video game developer might want to take advantage of it. I don't have one personally. I'm quite happy with my sweat inducing sexy red ds lite. It's not worth the price tag for such a small upgrade.

But please, pleeeeease don't force me (at gunpoint) to buy a DSi because everyone (the developers in this case) and their wife have decided that group love making is much more preferential over the standard coitus.

If you're going to force the consumer to make a choice, how about just releasing an entirely new handheld altogether hmm? I'm talking holograms, dual wielding stylus and a machine capable of love. At least that way I can justify spending another 100 pounds. I'll be making an investment. Not an upgrade.

Rant aside, for the mean time I think we'll be ok. Mr fat cat isn't that stupid right? He's not going to to go completely DSi exclusive. He'll want to target as big a market as possible? right?

I do want to see some of those games go DSi exclusive if only due to the fact that the DSi has more power under its hood then the DS and I really want to start seeing games that push the DSi's capabilities.

People need to remembeer that its not just the Camera, DSiWare and a few other things that make the DSi an improvement over the DS, its also more powerful with 4 times as much RAM and the CPU is better. They could add a hell of alot more to DSi games then DS games if they wanted to.

Considering how little benefits the DSi has it wouldn't be so bad. I don't really see the whole "FUCK NINTENDO!" side of it considering that there's ALREADY DS/DS Lite only games and features like BC so this is just balancing things out, there not taking anything away from DS/DS Lite owners that they weren't already doing with DSi Ware and they will still release DS games as well but some will now be DSi only.

Thank god that no good game will be in that lot.

Gimmicks ahoy.

I'm pretty sure that 95% of DS owners are just that, DS owners. I can't see how they stand to make as much money on the DSi when nearly all owners of probably wouldn't upgrade to a game or two on the same exact system.

I don't think the new Zelda game will be DSi exclusive, but probably, there will be a few features unlocked with the game being played on a DSi, just like it happened with the Gameboy Color, just because Nintendo apparently loves doing these kinds of things.

But actually, as mentioned here, the DSi CAN be considered an evolution of the DS Lite, because of the faster CPU and more RAM, games originally developed for it will be very different from the standard DS games, I believe that in about 2 years, there will be a decent library of DSi exclusive games and changing from the DSL to DSi will be "necessary", at least for me.

Also, when the DSi finally gets to be cracked, it will have better homebrew applications than the DS has, and that counts a lot for me.

There's no way the new Zelda will be DSi Exclusive. Nintendo knows they have a retardedly huge install base of regular DS and DS lites. They wouldn't chance the low sales figures on their second biggest franchise. Also, the trailers haven't shown anything the regular DS can't handle. I'm not worried.

...

Should I be?

The Game Boy Color came out in 1998. Pokemon Gold and Silver were released in October of 2000, and they supported the original Game Boy. I don't think we'll see any big name exclusives just yet. We're going to see "DSi Enhanced" titles far more commonly I'm sure.

Ghostwire is apparently cheap augmented reality? I can dig it.

Nintendo had a ton of games that were playable on both the GB and GBC. I think chances are good that they'll allow Spirit Tracks to be playable on both the DS and DSi, since the DS has such a huge base already as deaddays said. They may throw in some DSi-exclusive features, though.
