Rumortoid: Dreamcast 2 on the way? photo

SEGA has officially filed for trademark of the name Dreamcast once again, sending salivary glands and reproductive organs into a frenzy across the internet.

Although the original filing for the Dreamcast is still active, this latest one, (dated August 13 of this year), makes mention of “home video game machines; floor pads or mats" and "flash memory cards.” It's no secret around these parts that I love my Dreamcast like a dog with a bone, and there's never been any floor mat accessory or actual flash memory card in its library of accessories.

So what does it all mean? It could be anything from SEGA simply protecting its trademark, to Dreamcast games on XBLA, all the way to a surprise re-entry into the console market. There's no real way to know for sure, but I for one am crossing my fingers, toes, and anything else I have two of that can be crossed without resulting in excruciating pain that it's the latter option.

You can take a look at the official application document in the gallery below and draw your own conclusions. Considering that the original trademark is still valid, why would SEGA bother doing this at all? Was their acquisition of GameWorks a way to build revenue so they could fund something like this? Only time will tell whether we're foolishly getting our hopes up or there's something brewing here. What's your theory, Dtoiders? Hit the comments and speculate away.

Whatever happened to getting a winner for the Dreamcast copy of Last Hope? Yah I know my poem was bad but I tried. I'd crap my pants if I won a new Dreamcast game. I'd crap my pants twice if eventually I'd get to play it on a Dreamcast 2.

I want a DC2 with backwards compatibility and I want Sega to re-release original DC games. Hell yeah. I still play Sword of the Berserk, Grandia 2, and Sega Swirl.

@ArrestedDeveloper- Plz no. That controller was the most awkward thing ever. :(

Its D-pad is still reigning champ in my book, though.

Maybe I'll finally get the Power Stone 3 I've been screaming about for so long.

And can you imagine how awesome the VMU2 would be? I mean, look at what Apple's done with the Ipod in the interim. A new VMU would be able to hold, like, 10 gigs and play games on par with the first DC.

I declare that this is now the Dreamcast Love Room. Within the confines of this comment section, DC2 is a reality and we wax poetic about Project Justice and Seaman. You haters GTFO and stop peeing in our cereal.

The return of Sega is like, much better than the second coming of christ.

And about 1,000,000 times more likely.

EPIC WIN

I don't think Sega has the money to fund something as epic as a new console. Only Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo can afford it now. If any game publisher was going to enter the console market, my money would be on EA to do it.

The console itself will be solar powered, Dreamcast 2 uses less power than the Wii- and will win some kind of environmental prize. Oh, and of course the controller's buttons light up with state of the art mood lighting LEDs.

Just how Dreamcast's controller inspired Xbox and Xbox 360's gamepad design- Dreamcast 2's controller takes it to the next level. Oh, and Sega finally goes back to using 6 face buttons- thus securing the most perfect home version of Street Fighter 4 Turbo Championship Edition 2009.

Loved my Dreamcast, but I don't think Sega has the same game development talent or mindset they had when they almost singlehandedly made the Dreamcast one the best systems ever.

if Nintendo and SEGA had a lovechild and called it DREAMCAST 2 - that would be all win - the super powers of the 90s would come back with a fierce chuck norris kick to the groins of both PS3 and 360 ... HD graphics AND Wii controllers... *sigh* to dream.

cast me this dream.

OMG! I Still play with my DC and take it to dinner every now and then. While I dont think Sega will re-enter the console market due to not having the money, I think they can re-merge with Microsoft so they can ditch the non-japanese appealing name of Xbox and do something more like Dreamcast X or X-Cast or some thing like that.

I love hyphens.

Maybe fucking pirates won't kill the Dreamcast 2.

I had a friend who owned over 100 Dreamcast games, without paying for a single damned one. Burned 'em all from files he'd gotten from the "internet"
