Rumortoid: Dreamcast 2 on the way? photo

SEGA has officially filed for trademark of the name Dreamcast once again, sending salivary glands and reproductive organs into a frenzy across the internet.

Although the original filing for the Dreamcast is still active, this latest one, (dated August 13 of this year), makes mention of “home video game machines; floor pads or mats" and "flash memory cards.” It's no secret around these parts that I love my Dreamcast like a dog with a bone, and there's never been any floor mat accessory or actual flash memory card in its library of accessories.

So what does it all mean? It could be anything from SEGA simply protecting its trademark, to Dreamcast games on XBLA, all the way to a surprise re-entry into the console market. There's no real way to know for sure, but I for one am crossing my fingers, toes, and anything else I have two of that can be crossed without resulting in excruciating pain that it's the latter option.

You can take a look at the official application document in the gallery below and draw your own conclusions. Considering that the original trademark is still valid, why would SEGA bother doing this at all? Was their acquisition of GameWorks a way to build revenue so they could fund something like this? Only time will tell whether we're foolishly getting our hopes up or there's something brewing here. What's your theory, Dtoiders? Hit the comments and speculate away.

I think its trademark protection. I would love a Dreamcast 2, and would buy one for sure... but its a very slim chance something like that would happen

I myself want a DC return. I still hunt for both American and Import DC games. Surprisingly enough, My DC still runs like it's 9/9/99.

I really want that Trigger Heart Excela...

I'm wavering between manybe just DC games on PSN or XBL, and the hope that it might actually come out on as a new console.

Of course, if that's the case, I'm going to end up completely broke because of it...

I'm extremely doubtful that they'd enter the console market. It seems like all the demographics are tapped and unless they're trying to be the first console for the next-next-gen I don't see what would motivate people to buy it.

Sure there would be some sweet ass games but by then 360, PS3, and even Wii will have a decent library.

I still hope I'm wrong though.

I still love my original DC and I play it just about every day. Whether it's a new iteration or just DLC, my pants will need changing if there's anything new with that swirly logo on it. At all.

*a single tear rolls down MissHinasaki's face*

I will not get my hopes up.

But with Sony slowly botching things up for themselves, perhaps Sega is ready to retaliate and take the market back.

But I am just a dreamer.

I agree with King3vbo. It's just to protect the name Dreamcast as a videogame system cause it's still a viable system in places like Japan. I don't think this is Dreamcast 2.

Like I said in Xbudz cblog on this.

The Dreamcast lived on through the XBOX and 360. MS picked up Moore (from Sega), focused on online gaming with Live (DC had this focus too), and even Shenmue 2 was on the XBOX.

Perhaps a small online capable box using flash cards as storage to download old and possibly new dreamcast games. Kinda like a home console version of gametap. I would buy one.

Topher, if you had to choose between a beautiful, scantily clad woman or a Dreamcast, which would you choose? Keep in mind that the Dreamcast comes with every game and the woman is Natalie Portman. :)

The rumor is suggesting that Dreamcast didn’t actually have some of the features listed in the new trademark. Well, I beg to differ.. Floor pads and mats = Dance Dance Revolution (it was on DC)… The Dreamcast also definitely had a mouse and keyboard… but wait, flash memory cards? Yup, Visual Memory Units. So what’s the deal here? Did Sega merely summarize the features found in the original Dreamcast for its new trademark? Probably, but wouldn’t it be nice to believe that Sega was getting back into the console race? Bah, I’m going to call this rumor debunked.

Topher, that's true. But in the original 1998 Dreamcast trademark- they seriously list floppy disk drives, cassettes and even a video-phone.. and I'm pretty sure Sega didn't invent those... It's possible Sega is just renewing / cleaning up their claim to the name Dreamcast. Altho, I really would get all teary eyed if they announced it- and especially if they give it a 09/09/09 release date.

I highly doubt that sega would try and come back into the console wars. I can't imagine that they can bring anything new to the table that isn't already on the three current consoles, unless they pack it in with the rez vibrator

@Xbudz- I realize it's terribly unlikely, but the fact that they're poking around with the trademark years before they'd ever need to is fishy, and it's sure fun to think about either way.

@Danro- BELIEVE.

Perhaps just the nostalgia would help with the sales... Do they really need to come out with something super special awesome to appeal to us? I mean, look at us all just drooling at the prospect of Sega making a come back. It seems like everyone and their dog thought that the Dreamcast was awesome.

Sega simply don't have the capital to manage another hardware launch, the Saturn and the DC robbed them of all that.

It's just not going to happen guys.
