Rumortoid: Dead Rising sequel to be 'episodic' photo

Fact: putting on a horse mask and smashing a plant over a zombie's head is great, wholesome fun.

Fail: E3 has come and gone (although our coverage continues!), and the words "dead" and "rising" weren't uttered from Capcom's figurative lips. Instead, a Wii port of the original Dead Rising was introduced in Japan, and Capcom US ran like we were the undead when we mentioned the game.

But what of a bona fide sequel? Rumors have persisted for awhile now that a follow-up is in the works, with the development duties being handled by Western developer Blue Castle Games (The Bigs). Now Game Informer is reporting in the "Loose Talk" rumors section of their latest issue that "one of the words being used to describe [the sequel] is 'episodic.'"

We're unsure whether that means the game will be available in smaller chunks via downloadable content, or if the title will feature an "episodic" structure like Atari's ill-fated Alone in the Dark. Whatever the case, we'll take it -- whether it's delivered in bloody chunks or not, our zombie slaughtering itch will not be scratched until the game is officially announced.

Sounds confusing and begs the question: what does one do when they've finished an episode in the meantime? Just wonder and kill zombies or might they make it on such a grand scale that the episodes would only further the main character's story? HMMmmmmmMMmhHHhmmHmmhmhHHmmm...

I'm curious to see how they would manage to put a free-roaming game into an episodic format. The only things I can think of is periodically releasing whole new settings with new story (long and expensive) or releasing new story content but mostly reusing the same environment (not going to make you popular unless it's dirt cheap).

I definitely don't like the idea of an episodic Dead Rising. My guess is that they'll do it like Siren: Blood Curse. I hope they keep the "open world" aspect of the first game, which might be tough to do if they go the downloadable content route. Either way, I don't really care, I just want a new Dead Rising.

What I read was: "Lets rush this shit to market and then charge to patch it and include shit we should have included in the first place"

Episodic? Bizarro choice.

@Detry

While I'm every bit as cynical as you are (probably more), since when has that attitude been limited to episodic games?

Argh, now you've done it and sparked off my nerd rage again, I better go vomit.

well...

Seen as the end of the game hinted at a number of potential threats (keeping it vague just in case people still playing it) thats an addition number of episodes right there...

All set in similar places...

All using similar models/locations...

Quick to turn each one out? Yup...

Worth it.. The first one, maybe, the next X amount, probably not...

Fuck episodic gaming. There, I said it.

Especially with Dead Rising where part of the fun is building up your characters stats/level to beat some serious ass. Also, you stand to lose a good portion of sales from people who buy a single episode to mess around with the mechanics and are satisfied.

I'd like to see GTA4 styled episodic content... namely because that would require a full game first, but then with additional gaming sessions.

More is better.

Capcom has a lot of work to do on Dead Rising 2. If that game isn't fantastic, I'm sure Left4Dead will be getting all of my zombie dollars for the foreseeable future.

"smaller chunks via downloadable content"

Boo Urns!!!!!

What a load of shit, I will NOT be touching this if you have to DL levels and what not.

I'm going to be Dead Rising? Awesome.

In the mean time, I don't know if I can deal with episodic games. The only time I can think of a properly successful game that's been episodic has been the HL2 episodes, but they've got all the time in the world to make their games.

I'll eat my words if this works, but meh. Didn't really like the first one.

I don't know why Capcom doesn't see this as another huge franchise for them, much like Resident Evil. I can see them not wanting to release too many zombie games at the same time, as DR2 might hurt RE5. In any case, episodic or not, DO WANT.

I really don't give a damn, as long as there's some online co-op.

I'm pretty against episodic gaming since the stories seem too short or they seem to cost too much over a long period of time. So don't do this Capcom especially since your scripts for these games tend to be corny as hell. Also if its the AitD method then just don't. That obviously didn't work.

Episodic gaming has NO place in a survival game whatsoever. Would the original have worked that way? Meh.
