Rumortoid: Chrono Trigger's new dungeon, possible game sequel

11:02 AM on 08.26.2008, Dale North 44 comments

     Squenix

We already know that the upcoming DS version of Chrono Trigger is getting a new dungeon or two, but we didn't put some of the pieces together as fast as Siliconera did.

We've known about the lost level, Singing Mountain, for some time now. It was a outdoor waterfall dungeon from the 65,000,000 B.C. which was cut before the game's release. The name "Singing Mountian" may look familiar to game music nerds, as the geekiest of them will know it as one of composer Yasunori Mitsuda's "lost tracks" for the Chrono Trigger soundtrack. Who knows? Maybe both the dungeon and this song will make it into the DS re-release.

There's less weight to this next rumor, but it's worth mentioning:

You may remember a that Square Enix trademarked the name Echoes of Time. Some thought that this name may refer to the Chono Trigger DS remake, but now that we've seen the boxart, that's not the case. Siliconera points to the possibility of another Chrono series game. That would be nice, but I think it's wishful thinking more than anything else. Honestly, I'd rather see a Chrono Cross re-release for my PSP.

Hey, Square Enix:  I'd rather see a Chrono Cross re-release for my PSP.

They should just release Chrono Cross and Chrono Trigger as PSOne Classics and start to work on a third installment.

Chrono Cross would have been great if it weren't for the 30+ cast of shitty, contrived characters and retarded element battle system.

Chrono Trigger never has and never will need a sequel.

I have mixed feelings about this. Chrono Cross was shit, and I feel like Chrono Trigger was such perfection that another sequel could sully its name.

@Dvddesign: Kingdom Hearts is getting a DS and PSP game sometime next year, but yeah Squenix doesn't like to give new IP's much of a chance.

Second, Amen to the Chrono Cross re-release. If I can carry Skelly around with me all the time, I'll be a happy man.

Third, why the fuck is marle using Lucca's power?!!?

If anybody truly thinks Chrono Cross is a bad game, then they're probably just upset it wasn't a direct sequel, either that or they feel it sullied the name of Chrono Trigger.

Get past your nostalgia and you'll realize something: Chrono Cross is a better game then Chrono Trigger.

There, I said it. It's my favorite RPG after Final Fantasy 9.

If Chrono Cross were not the sequel to Chrono Trigger, it would have been a fine game. As it stands, it's a terrible sequel because it implied that everything that happened in Chrono Trigger had terrible repercussions which would eventually ruin the lives of the original cast.

It doesn't build off of what made Chrono Trigger's story so good- what made it the simple, feel-good, time-travelling epic that it was. It practically says "Oh hey, remember that fantastic adventure you had? Well it turns out that because you embarked on it, all the characters you knew and loved suffered horribly, and probably died."

I normally hate putting spoilers in comments, but the story of the game just makes me angry. I'm actually a little angry that the cinematics are in the game just because one of the scenes implies that Chrono Cross is canon.

I got a better IDea.

Hey square

Do not bring Chrono cross back.

1 that game sucked and it's only thing that even came close to the first chrono trigger was the music.

2 it made the chrono series look like a bad final fantasy 7-8 rip off. (and final fantasy 7 and 8 also sucked.

3 everything about the damn game as bland or sucked. there was so many lame characters with some of the worst character art I have seen since legend of mana, that they was all entirely pointles, they might as well have stuffed in midless filler robots.

Give us a decent new chrono Trigger how about that?

Can you do it or can you only make thigs suck like the mana games and final fantasy the suckage that is since final fantasy?

What no you cant?

well never mind then don't do anything.

OH and h ave no no nostalgia. ever time I put chrono cross in i can see how much it sucks BALLS.

it is almsot as bad as legend of mana or dawn of mana, then again just about everything square put on the playstation sucked.

i don't care if it was not a direct sequal it just blown.

and since kidd is Schala clone it is a direct sequal and they even made Schala SUCK balls and bland and that is hard to do since Schala in chrono trigger got like almost no Screen time.

Oh did i spoil that? OH well ther eis not much left but for the lucca's house area

I saved everybody the trouble who has not played it the trouble of playing the game.

Thank me later.

I liked the music in Chrono Cross a lot but the rest of the game was disappointing. Too many characters... When I was playing it I felt like every reference to Chrono Trigger was just a reminder that this was NOT Chrono Trigger.

ME: "Hey it's the Epoch!"
GAME: "Don't touch that. - Also let's never mention this again."
ME: "Awe. ::SAD::"

I would be cautiously optimistic about a NEW Chrono Trigger game however.

Chrono Cross wasn't that bad, people.

On a side note; this Echoes of Time trademark is about as hope lifting (and almost certainly just as hope destroying) as when Square trademarked Chrono Break.

Chrono Cross was a good game, it was just a poor fit within the Chrono universe. Many of the themes, devices, and gameplay elements that made the the original such a hit among fans were completely abandoned in Chrono Cross. For example, instead of having a small cast of well-developed and endearing characters, Chrono Cross' cast was greatly inflated and filled largely with uninteresting and flat characters.

Instead of using a simple yet engaging story to keep the time-traveling mechanic from becoming an overwhelming plot device, Chrono Cross had a story filled with plot holes that takes diagrams to explain to anyone, and there isn't a clear consensus on exactly what is happening.

Finally, the game ditches the combo-based system and instead derives a mechanic out of the elements. While this system is also well-done and very interesting, it is a radical departure from Chrono Trigger and what fans were expecting.

In short, Chrono Cross is a victim of Legend of Zelda II syndrome: a great game that is underappreciated and even scorned by fans because the publisher used the name to make fans expect one thing but gave them something completely different. See Secret of Evermore for another example.

1. Chrono Cross was great. However, I do admit that it wasn't an ideal sequel to Chrono Trigger.

2. In response to, "They should just release Chrono Cross and Chrono Trigger as PSOne Classics and start to work on a third installment." Doesn't anyone have CFW these days? You know you can rip your copy of Chrono Cross and play it on the PSP....

If you think Chrono Cross is shit, get real. It's a brilliant game and easily one of the best games of the PSX era, which had it's fair share of brilliant games and RPG's. Chrono Cross had plenty of innovative features, such as the combat elements and level's only from bosses, It drowns in replayabliity, and tries things that other RPG's don't. Chrono Trigger fan(boy)s don't like it because it has Chrono in it's name and it doesn't have Crono running around being a mute. Don't get me wrong, I don't think it's a patch on Chrono Trigger, and I am eagerly anticipating CT DS so I can get me a legit copy finally,

Dont think of Chrono Cross as a sequel to Chrono Trigger, It's a spiritual successor.

If they make a Chrono Sequel it should have nothing to do with previous games in the series. That way it can be judged better as it's own experience.

Chrono Cross was a good game. Good music, good multi-attack battle system. It's too bad about those must-land-attack to cast spells that needed to be equipped, though. The character vignettes were much more interesting than the main story, too.

Chrono Cross was OK.

Not a good sequel to Trigger.

I'd enjoy a sequel to Trigger that played with time, which is part of the reason Crono Trigger was special to me.

To get a game with the same sensibilities aabout playing with time, I'd risk any staunch afficianado's opinion that a bad sequel will somehow mire the original's reputation.

That certainly didn't happen with Chrono CrossOHSNAP!

"Ya get him"

"Bloody Hell get him"

fantasic deep characters they are!

and don't for get the winners liek Mojo and starsky. and that dude guil who was a full character for like 6 seconds before he started spiting out comments all the other fill characters say.

lol, I loved the character design for Cross. The guy who did them did the artwork for Escaflowne, and that shit was BEAUTIFUL. I only wish they'd let him animate the intro for the game instead of using that shitty in-game CG nonsense.

As for the many, many characters in Cross, they were essentially letting you play as the NPC's from Trigger. Trigger had a ton of useless, bullshit NPC characters that got thrown away at a moment's notice. CC let you play as them. How is that not a bonus?

The main, required story characters in Cross were much better developed than the ones in Trigger. Trigger's characters are all terrible stereotypes with little to no personality past what their stereotype allowed for. At least Cross had some emotion going on in there.

Ya Characters so story "GOOD" I can't remeber anything about them except how much THEY sucked and how freakish serge looked in the damn drawings.

I mean what the only part worth remeber is at the end. Oh we saved a minior character from chrono trigger and look it's that missing chick magnus hanged with!

Suckage NPC characters are what they are for you don't ad UCKY ass main characters as your main cast.

lets take a movie

it will be lord of the rings.

gandolf will not be played by Ian McKellen

Frodo will not be played by Elijah Wood.

Hell screw that the gandolf and frodo will not EVEN be in the movie.

NO NO NO they wil not take the ring.

The starring role is going to character town extra character 56b, the guy who makes the grumpy face at the start of the movie and one of the bartenders are going to go on an epic quest for the flim with his broom as a weapon!

there you go that is hrono cross, main charcters played by NPC number 44 B some freak ass named guile, and a pathtic 80's rocker nobody even remebers his name and a bunch of other freaks nobody cares about.

Oh and lame ass version clone of a minor from chorno trigger who gets screwed over in disc 2 when she stoppes being the main focas of the story and turns into a even lamer fill character like the rest of them nice!

Oh ya and I have chrono trigger. But I still have not played through it again since 1995.

I still remeber just about everything about it, but I cant remeber 98% of chrono cross from 1999 or all this emotion you claim it has and it has been a short amount of time since I finshed the game.

I pre odered the damn thing, even got a CD and a clock crap.

All the emotion moments I remeber are from chrono trigger

Robo's exile,

frogs story,

chrono's death.

mangus not really being the bad guy, what ever Chrono triggers moments come out in SPADES and I did not for get any.

I can just about remember the story word for word after playing it once it 1995 and can't remeber 99% of crhono cross I think that is a good measurement on it's emotion and how LAME and forgetable tha damn story is in chrono cross.

Oh ya by the way spoliers!

Chrono Chross just wasn't that good. I think if it wasn't a "sequel" to Chrono Trigger people would understand that even more.

1. The entire battle system was crap. The combo system was awkward and boring. Compare that combo system to a game like Valkyrie Profile and it will be more apparent.

2. They took a step backwards and made the battle's more like random encounters again. The menu pop up on the screen was an excellent feature in the first game and it surprised me when they didn't have that in Chross.

3. The game had so many characters with so little personality. Countering Gen's point - maybe the characters were stereotypes in the first but you still had more personality in them. 30 plus characters in Chrono Chross and the only ones that had more than the occasional one liner to say were Kid and Harle.

4. There were very little combo attacks available. Combo attacks were also a huge attraction in Trigger that were an afterthought in Chross.

The only thing good about the game was the music. I thought the artwork was also very nice. It was otherwise an unremarkable game.

Chrono Cross had one of the worst battle systems I've played. The music was awesome. Plot? I don't play games for plot, rarely ever have. Also Legend of Mana was actually pretty fun. Dawn of Mana would have been more fun if it hadn't been so broken gameplay-wise.

Sorry Mr Cube, but is there a reason WHY you have to be such a complete dick about EVERYTHING? Come on, FF VII and VIII were pretty good, even excellent in places.
I am most definitely a Chrono Trigger fanboy, I have all the soundtracks and have everyone at level **, etc. and I still thought that Chrono Cross was a fantastic game. The story was amzing and well written, the graphics were brilliant, and the combat system, once you got used to it, is extremely versatile. The thing that the characters, in fact that the whole of Cross gave you, was choice. You can play this game how the hell you like. You want to save Kid? Sure. You're a heartless bastard? That's fine. You can go through this game and only get the central characters, but you miss out on so damn much.
They were both epicly fantastic, and I won't have a word said against either of them.
Trigger's soundtrack does have the edge, though. Mitsuda is a freakin' genius.
