Rumortoid: Chipset info on next DS, PSP2 photo
#DS

Nerdy gamers like myself want to know a bit about the electronic guts inside their gaming systems. I can still rattle off some of the specs of the last few generations of systems, in fact. And if you're anything like me, these rumors on the next portable generation's chipsets will be interesting.

DS - Word is that the next DS wil be using an Nvidia Tegra 2 chipset, which gives it about twice the power of the currently available system. We heard earlier that this chipset will provide backwards compatibility. That's always good.

PSP - The next PSP is rumored to be rocking a fancier version of the iPhone's IMG PowerVR chip. There's a few potential issues for this chipset, though. One is that it won't ship until 2011. Another is that it may be more difficult to develop for. Oh, Sony.

I feel dirty for thinking about the next systems with my current gen ones sitting here looking at me right now.

"Word is that the next DS wil be using an Nvidia Tegra 2 chipset, which gives it about twice the power of the currently available system."

Actually, it will have twice the power of the Zune HD, which has Tegra 1, not twice the power of the DS.

Oh great, the ridiculous fan concept art begins to emerge.

Don't quote me on this, but I think PowerVRs have been around for a long time, so a fair few devs know their way around them.

Hell the Dreamcast used it in some shape or form.

i'm not even convinced we see a ds 2. it'll probably be something compatible, but really different.

I don't see an issue with the PSP chip shipping in 2011. With the Go recently released, Sony should be able to wait that long, anyway.

interesting, anyone know how powerful the Ds2's graphics would be in comparison to the original Psp?

I hope the rumors about backwards comparability are true, it'll be another seven years until I've finished all the DS RPGs and Strategy/RPGs that I have, and I don't want there to be any issues keeping me from upgrading.

I read the article on eurogamer that goes back about five sources, and it said that the DS chipset would make it twice as powerful as the zune HD but it would remove the HD coding. As for the psp2 it would use something between the power of xbox 1 and 360 power with a smaller chip and less power consumption. And if it's a more powerful version of the iphone's chipset it should be a dream to program for because so many companies already do it. The only problem is the software that IMD uses for dev kits aren't the best. And that it has 4 cores. Using the snippet that engadget made for a source is kinda lazy. If you look at the real sources for all of this you'll see that you got this kinda wrong. The only place it said the psp2 would be difficult to develop for is the engadget article which is a fourth level source.

eurogamer - kotaku - slashgear - engadget - destructoid.

Trying to keep you honest.

I readed days ago the eurogamer article, and even that I think that is very soon to release the next gen nintendo portable the line that say "the machine will match the power and exceed the Wii's capabilities are not unrealistic." is intriguing for me, I mean, I know that the Wii is not a powerhouse, but for a handheld that sounds great.

Well, the psp2 better have a lot better graphics. It should be way cheaper than the pspgo, and must have dual analog sticks.

hopefully they won't go digital only like they are with the PSPgo. A big portion of my PSP games are UMD I got from good sales.

That fan concept art is fugly, and painful to have in ones pocket. Also, no dual sticks.

Backwards compatibility for PSP2 would be a must. Also, I hope that the system has both a disc drive and an HDD, not just one or the other. I'll be a sadface if I can't bring my PSP1 collection with me without bringing my actual PSP.

What I'm interested in is whether or not the ds2 will have two screens still or if they will put to analog sticks on the psp2. I hope they keep the clam shell design for the ds2, because if it's a portable system, durability should remain a large factor.

I'm not an nVidia fan, but I have to admit that Tegra is VERY powerful, and Tegra2 will be MORE AND MORE powerful than the actual DS/DSi hardware, not only "twice" powerful. And the backward compatibility... well with that chip can emulate everything they want... IF they (Nintendo) want...
