Rumortoid: Braid to cost 1200 MS points, Castle Crashers costs 1800!? photo

Here's a rather ugly rumor for you all to chew on this morning. Perhaps knowing that Braid and Castle Crashers are two of Xbox Live Arcade's most highly anticipated titles, it's rumored that the powers-that-be are being shrewd and bloodthirsty enough to charge 1200 MS points for Braid, and an unsettling 1800 points for Castle Crashers.

Four Japanese sources (including Famitsu and Xbox.com's official Japanese blog) are stating that these two games will be more expensive than the average XBLA games. This is a rumortoid until we get an English announcement though. If it turns out to be true, you can color me a particularly brown shade of disgusted.

At 1800 points, Castle Crashers would be Xbox Live Arcade's most expensive title, costing even more than Penny Arcade Adventures. Something tells me we shouldn't have let Microsoft know that it was the first XBLA title that we all really, really wanted. Still, I'll wait until the English announcement before I scream "F*CK YOU MICRO$OFT AND I SPELL THE "S" IN YOUR NAME WITH A DOLLAR SIGN" from the highest rooftop.

I normally wouldn't go for this, but I picked up 6 1600-point cards from Target a month ago for $5 each, so this gives me something to use them on.

I played Braid. It is a fun title, but $15 seems too high.

And over $20 for Castle Crashers? That's all based on Microsoft wanting to rip us off. Maybe The Behemoth, too.

Digital downloads costing more and more by the month, companies locking away content and forcing us to pay $10-15 to unlock it on our own discs... I don't like where this generation is heading.

UGH! If there was one size cap Microsoft shouldn't have removed, it would be the 800 MS Point XBLA cap.

Castle Crashers was going to be the first Arcade game I own. Going at $24 I'll have to pass though given that $20 is going better towards a more expensive game.

Heck, at $24 you can buy full games for a little more on ebay.

Welp, looks like no Castle Crashers for me. Fuck you very much Microsoft.

PS - Wasn't there a rumor awhile ago that Castle Crashers was going to be free?

Right, as an XBLA developer - and a co-developer with Behemoth on a previous project - I need to make a couple of comments here.

Firstly I don't know if that 1800 price point is correct - 1600 is the highest price so far so I wouldn't be surprised to see CC at that.

Secondly the costs of development of a game like Castle Crashers are pretty significant and Behemoth (et al) do it on a crappy budget to say the least. The last thing you can accuse any indie of is "money grabbing". It's actually more difficult and more expensive for an indie than a regular publisher (some of the reasons I can't go into here).

Thirdly, $20 is a fair price (assuming 1600 points) for a good title which keeps people entertained.

Two problems however - $20 for US players equates to rather more elsewhere yet the developer only actually gets the US dollar rate. So if MS ask us to pay more in e.g. the UK, that isn't Behemoth or Jon Blow's fault and nor do they profit from it. In some cases the price is higher because of local sales taxes, but that may not be the whole story.

The fact that it is a digital product obviously makes it a little harder to deal with too, although opinions may change with time.

Finally, a lower price will mean more players but it doesn't mean more revenue - that depends upon the numbers involved. Behemoth and JB have to make enough money to do the next one - indies can't bootstrap every year, they have to make a living and won't be getting rich. Indies don't have investors or AAA games to fund them through what is an extremely expensive process.

I'll probably post something about this on my newretro.org blog for those interested but I just felt I needed to give another point of view. Please don't shoot me for it!

In the end, buy it based on it being worth the money for the time you'll spend on it. If it ain't for you, it ain't for you, but I have to defend accusations of money grabbing developers because it isn't true. FYI Price point, in the end, is probably MS' choice but it usually calculated in conjunction with the developer.

I'll be totally honest... I've never really thought about getting CC, because I don't like the art style or the play of these previous newgrounds games. But, in all honesty, isn't CC a flash version of Final Fight?, or Streets of Rage, or TMNT? How could the cost of the game be so high, when people are creating flash versions of similar games for free on newgrounds?

This game should be 800 points max.

Sigh.

I even wanted to play these games, and I'm not usually into the whole XBLA thing. Too bad it's going to cost me $30+ Canadian because M$ doesn't want to admit that the US and Canadian dollar are more or less par. For the moment, do not want. I'll just be sitting over here with my pile of used games I got for the same price.

free touch - if you want me to explain in detail why it's expensive I'll be happy to do it over a private message rather than bore people here, but yes, it genuinely is expensive. Perhaps a blog post or something is in order...

If the game was created on PC only it'd be expensive enough, but the fact that it's on console makes it significantly more so (for a whole variety of reasons). Console development incurs significant additional costs.

Compared to most on-line Flash games, you're probably looking at anything from 20-50x or more in costs, not just 2 or 3x as much.

I expect the game to be 1600 points for the West, and I expect you'll find 1200 and 1600 to be the new standard price points (generally matching PC download price points incidentally).

The thing that gets me is that you can get games like Ikaruga, Rez, and Soul Calibur for 800 and the Xbox originals are all 1200. So to pay 1600 for what seems to be not much more than a multiplayer hack n slash flash game seems a little excessive.

I could be wrong though. Ive never played the game and have only watched a couple of videos. I dont get the excitement.

Id be more than happy to pay 800 like i paid for all those other games, including Alien Hominid.

And the whole indie developer needing to make up their costs by charging more seems like it could go either way. You charge double and have less people buy the game or you charge the norm and have more people buy it...

What. The. Fuck.

You know, if you let them rape us once, they'll just rape us harder next time, and harder after that, and so on. All you people who say "STFUAJPG" really don't get it, do you?

Regardless of how "complete" of an "experience" these two games are, there should be a standard for downloadable arcade game pricing. As far as I'm concerned, $20 for anything on XBLA or PSN is really pushing credibility. No, $15 is pushing it, $20 is a little bit over the edge. Bottom line, downloadable content (in any form, on any medium) should not cost much. I fucking hate that they might be making people like me decide between saying, "No, you may not rape me," and "Yes, I support these good indie games."

I'm not going to buy anything at this price. It pisses me off that people are like "oh well", because its that same attitude that will guarantee that Arcade games are basepriced at 30 dollars for the next console.

It's the same attitude that allows companies like EA to fuck you in the ass with micro transaction charges.

It's the same attitude that allows publishers to ship incomplete games and still charge you full price for them.

So good luck with this crap guys. I'm certainly not a sadist, so I won't continue to take it in the ass from these companies trying to nickle and dime us.

sillytuna: 1600 points is the standard for pc download price points? Umm, if I look at Steam for example and check the casual and indie sections (Sorry but I'm not going to entertain the idea that development costs are the same as with the bigger retail games there), most games are $9.99 (800 points).

Personally, rather than messaging people, I would genuinely like to read your opinions on why those price points should become the norm, given the number of both new and totally reworked games available for half the price in a blog post or something. It seems that the majority of us evidently have a skewed view when it comes to dev costs.

If the reason for the cost is console development, why not develop for the PC? Seems that would provide better bang for your buck and allow a price that is more favourable to potential (and now lost) customers. Giving themselves the dubious honour of most expensive game on LIVE seems to be a pretty bad way of bringing their games to a wider audience.

Besides, why didn't they release on PC when there's such a huge audience aware of them through Newgrounds?

All - just put up a post about this to save clogging up the comments section.

Timmeh: I'll do a blog post on the cost of game dev and will do a version for Destructoid. If you check newretro.org you'll find I've written about the pros and cons of console and pc dev for indies. Altho aimed at developers, you'll finnd plenty of information in there about why console is expensive and also why it can be worthwhile.

Regarding PC Steam price points - the $9.99 games tend to be older rather than the original price point, weren't released on PC for quite some time after console, or are smaller games. The standard price point for higher end indie casual has been $19.99 for many years and has been well tested by successful developers/publishes I know.

Def Con and Darwinia from Introversion's own store is still £10 / $19.50 for example.

I guess that 800 points and 1600 points are good price points for me. Smaller games should be 800, larger ones 1600. 1200 for Braid is a slight oddity and I suspect that's being done as something of a market test.

re: PC - Piracy + compatibility issues + joypad is uncommon + xbla has standardised networking + multiple players don't sit around one PC. Piracy is the big one, but not the only reason. Sales figures are way, way lower on PC for indie and arcade stuff than the same type of games on console.

what also sucks is if its is 1800 that means you have go buy points twice. so you get a 1600 points card.. you are still forced to buy the next lowest points card for 6.50 just to get enough money. then after that you only have 300 points to just sit and do nothing with till you add MORE points.

If they're over 10 bucks, I'm not paying for them. Bionic Commando: Rearmed is 10 bucks. If they can release that for 10, these guys can release their games for 10

They'll drop in price eventually, and I'll buy them then.

I wouldn't pay more than $16 for this. I want this game, but not that bad.

MS needs to look at their demo for this game. College-age and a little older? The stereotypes are correct, we're fairly poor. I don't even pay full price for theatre movies anymore.

I just don't have the cash to blow on entertainment when a book will entertain me longer for half the price.

$32.74 Canadian. That's how much 2000 points cost. I could figure out 1800, but really, the bottom line is you can't buy 1800 points (in Canada the lowest MSP bundle size is 500)

HOWEVER, remember how muh press there was before the 1600 point max jump? How it came with a bunch of extra shit, like bigger game sizes, etc? How we all knew about the 1600 Penny Arcade release long before, and MS's press people were all over it? Well, I cannot imagine they'd up the maximum AGAIN, to no press, no advantages, and no mega-game on the horizon (honestly, if you think castlecrashers is as high profile as the first ever penny-arcade-related game, take one (1) PR course).

I reckon it's 800 points. Makes the most sense typo-wise. Wouldn't rule out 1200 or 1600 but it can't be 1800, surely. If it is, I'll play it at someone else's house or something. Not getting my points, and I spend a lot of those little fuckers. This is not worth 2.25 Ikarugas.
