Rumortoid: BioShock 2 to have multiplayer mode photo

As great as BioShock was, were you one of the many to complain that it didn't have multiplayer? 2K Boston has heard your cries.

According to a job profile found over at Gamasutra, the team working on the sequel to last year's critically acclaimed game are seeking an experienced designer to lead their multiplayer team. Let's repeat that: an experience designer to lead their multiplayer team.

While it's possible that 2K Boston are working on another title that's not a BioShock sequel, the description goes out of its way to mention the original saying, "BioShock had no multi-player mode. We don't believe in throwing in something that can't go head to head with the big boys. No applicants will be considered who aren't able to demonstrate they've got the skills to build an industry-changing multiplayer design."

Applicants are also expected to be familiar with the BioShock universe and other 2K Boston/Irrational products. Someone has some big expectations to meet. We'll see if the bar is raised when 2K officially reveals BioShock 2

Blech Bioshock doesn't need multiplayer. I thought it was great the way it was, a complete single player experience.

I'm with nintendoll, Bioshock needs no multiplayer. It doesn't feel like a game that would adapt well to multiplayer, it's just sorta slow.

That Ripten fellow, John Ker-something. Rather dashing isn't he?

On topic, if this is true, the fact there are separate studios working on the multiplayer/single player gives me hope.

Co-op fine, anything else Do Not Want. Why? I think the first proved it wasn't necessary.

as long as it doesn't take away from the main game. I don't think games need multiplayer and didn't miss it in the first BioShock. If the intention of the designer is to make a multiplayer game, then that's great and people can buy those games, but rarely can a game excel on both fronts. CoD4 has great multiplayer, but the single player suffered. It was much too short. I don't understand why many gamers think they are entitled to a multiplayer mode in every game and think that gamers who prefer to go solo are often times forgotten. anyway, BioShock devs, please don't forget the solo gamers in the hope of bringing tea-baggin mother fraggers to rapture.

It would definitely be a nice addition, but it's certainly not necessary.

Maybe it'd work like other military multiplayers (ahem, CoD 4) with kits of powers and weapons. I hope for this scenario. It could also be more like Halo with pickup powers and weapons, which is cool, but not nearly as customizable.

At least if they're going to do it, it sounds as if they're going to do it right. Honestly, I'm still not sold on the idea of BioShock 2, but we'll see how it turns out.

Via ripten? Really? I heard they just employ a bunch of emo British kids that get beaten my Sterlimaniacs.

I think I speak for everyone with half a brain when I say:

Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo Do not want!

The world they created for Bioshock absolutely does not support sticking in some meaningless generic multiplayer modes. I wonder whether they are going to butcher the story to shoehorn it in or just ignore setting altogether and just have it totally and inexplicably removed from the single player story.

Although I didn't miss it in the first, after a month after giving it up to Blockbuster, idea's of how awesome Multiplayer could have been began to pop up.

If they do it right, it just might replace Griffball.

If they had delayed the first one in order to add a multiplayer, I would've thought this unnecessary, but to do it on the second only makes sense for an FPS nowadays. I doubt they'd ever let go of singleplayer. I don't even want a sequel myself, but if they are they might as well add in other shit as well.

i agree that the game is all about the single player, but with proper map design, multiplayer could be a hell of a lot of fun. i want to kill people with bees. people i know. then i want to call them and say, hey, bee face, take that. how about a bee sandwich? bee face.

I think it's hilarious and sad that people would actually get upset about the inclusion of multiplayer, like it's going to automatically make the game worse. If you don't want to play it, don't play it.

That said, I don't feel the game needs multiplayer, nor can I even imagine what that would look like. Still, this was inevitable. You'd be foolish not to have thought so.

Sharpless, It makes people upset cause it means resources will be devoted to a feature most don't even care about then on creating a great single player experience. I personally also agree with the masses. It doesn't need Multplayer. I much rather see story extending DLC than multiplayer. Don't ask me how it would be done, but in my head....it would be the kittens mittens.

I dont think that multiplayer would be all bad. Playing as a splicer could be interesting, and they do have different 'classes' built in from the original game. Kill a Big Daddy to get the sister to get EVE to use super powers against the other players. Good times.

Sharpless, I think the reason people get so upset about the multiplayer addition is becuase it cheapens the game. Bioshock was interesting for so many reasons, one of them being that it had the balls not to crowbar in some arbitrary multiplayer mode just to satisfy most people's expectations. Sure it's dumb to moan about getting more stuff, but I'd probably have the same reaction if they started bundling packets of chalk with each block of mature cheddar that I buy.

Wow, I would fucking KILL for a serious co-op designed experience.

I went through System Shock 2 with my roomie who has never played it before, and it was a spectacular experience. Yes, the game is old as dirt and wasn't meant for co-op play, it was still a thrill.

Can you imagine what it would be like if the great minds behind this series actually put time and effort in to making a co-op game actually work on a story based level?
Sharpless's Avatar
Sharpless at 07/31/2008 17:04
I'm sorry, but I don't honestly believe that multiplayer will make the singleplayer any worse. In some games, yes, this can be the case. And it may be the case here, I don't know. But most people have already written this game off and recoil at the very thought of it, so I think it's largely just needless bitching, at this point. And it certainly does not "cheapen" the game. Seriously, that's just ridiculous.

And what exactly would be worth complaining about, if they packaged chalk with cheese? It's free fucking chalk, man.

Not once while playing the first game did I think, "you know what would make this game better? Multiplayer." Granted, I didn't think the game needed a sequel, despite it being my favorite game of the year, so who cares what I think.

I love Bioshock and it is definitely my favorite game of all time but I don't see how a sequel makes sense and I definitely don't see how multiplayer would work.

One of the best things about the Bioshock was its immersive universe and setting. The best games for me are the ones that don't feel like games. Multiplayer just cements the fact that you are playing a game and it also takes away from the believability of a video game's universe.

I don't just dislike the idea of multiplayer in Bioshock, I despise it. It shows that the developers are willing to sacrifice the integrity of their universe to please a few people who probably don't care about the game that much anyway. The developers are alienating their old fans in the pursuit of making some new ones.

I agree, no need for multiplayer in Bioshock. That thought never crossed my mind while playing the game. However, if bioshock 2 does ship with multiplayer, I won't shun it without giving it a shot. It could be good.

I herd they didn't want to do a multiplayer Bioshock because that would have taken away from the story.

I mean really, what's with the idea that all FPS MUST have a multiplayer so you can shoot your friends in the same boring ass Deathmatch on Xbox live and say retarded things in a shrill voice?
Sharpless's Avatar

@superhobo
Not necessarily. A lot of people (i.e. idiots) wrote off BioShock when it was announced they wouldn't have multiplayer. Some people refuse to pick up games that have no online component.
