Rumortoid: BioShock 2 a prequel showing Rapture's fall? photo

We all know that BioShock 2 is on the cards, but so far nobody has a clue what it's going to be about. Recently however, a rumor has started cropping up suggesting the game will be a prequel set during the civil war that killed Andrew Ryan's underwater city of Rapture.

While a somewhat logical move, I don't know how I feel about this. One of the best parts of BioShock was how much of the player's imagination it invoked, and how a bigger picture was detailed through scant resources like audio diaries of Rapture's citizens. I don't know if I'd like to see such wonderfully crafted and subtle little hints exposed in such a way. Does BioShock 2 even need to be set in Rapture anyway? I think not.

As always, this is nothing but rumor until something more concrete surfaces, but it's worth a discussion. What would you think of a prequel? Are you as nervous as I am on such an idea, or are you all for it?

[Thanks, Evo]

That could be awesome, but personally I'd like it to be set twenty years in the future and plasmids have become common through the entire world.

I said it was going to be a prequel a while ago. The best idea possible. The rise/civil war would be such an interesting time. There would be a lot. 2K Marin must have seen my extreme fanboyism for BioShock and saw my vision.

So we choose between someone else stumbling across Rapture, have the twisted bastards of Rapture escaping into the great yonder, or a prequel where you get to be one of the large or small players in Raptures eventual fall. They all sound like fun.

OOH! OOH! How about playing as a little sister that got left behind with her crazed creator?

I said this was the only logical thing they could do as soon as they announced the sequel.

Seriously, not everything needs to be a franchise, game developers.

@ bus,
That's the best way to do a sequel. I would rather have something similar to the bad ending happing for the sequel. I mean even if you picked the good ending where did all the left over splicers go? Maybe you could set it in some city like New York and give it a decayed I am legend feel. Then you could go through the whole "omfg guyz wtf happenz!" theme again. But the whole suicide bombers thing is an interesting idea.

A prequel would be interesting. I would like to see that done actually.

just completed the game. just created an account! i stumbled upon this while lookin for details on a seque/prequel.

personally a prequel could be done so well. i'd love to get a deeper insight into the collapse of rapture, and a glimpse of what it looked like before so...

an idea i had was that they did it in a similar style as call of duty. by that i mean to have different stories played out from different perspectives, all during the collapse and aftermath of raptures downfall.

it could incorporate set-pieces touched upon in bioshock: one story could show the hangings in the town square, another could possibly include a set-piece showing suchongs death when he slaps a little sister and gets mauled by a big daddy for his trouble...

hopefully ya can see where i'm going with this, i've already wrote an essay here. just interested if anyone might be inclined to agree with me!
