Rumortoid: Baldur's Gate III in the works, BioWare won't be involved photo

An unnamed developer and publisher Atari are allegedly in the process of bringing Baldur’s Gate III to fruition. This rumor arises from a source at CVG, who says that the original creator of the series BioWare, will not be involved in the process. It is also being reported that the game will not be available for “at least another year.”

The obvious developer to look at when speculating about this title is Obsidian, who spun a nifty expansion for NeverWinter Nights 2. When I had an opportunity to speak to a presenter for the game at a convention a few months back, I immediately asked if Obsidian were working on a Baldur’s Gate or Icewind Dale title in addition to the NWN 2 expansion. The presenter flatly denied it, so take that for what it’s worth.

As with most rumors, take this with a grain of salt. While it would be nice to see how the Forgotten Realms have been doing since we last ventured into Baldur’s Gate, there is little substantiation past our own wishes that support this rumor.

I would like to point out that it took the NWN 2 expansion for Obsidian to finally finish a story in a proper fashion. KOTOR 2 and NWN2 where terribad plot wise at the end.

I love Baldurs Gate but they sewed up the plotline pretty handily.

Obsidian have an unfortunate reputation for being commissioned to make sequels to classic Bioware games and making a hash of it. I'm thinking of Neverwinter Nights and KOTOR here. Brian's already pointed out the horrible ending of KOTOR2, which was only the worst of many glaring inadequacies in that game (which was, admittedly, allegedly rushed to publication at the behest of Lucasarts). KOTOR2 had a lot of potential but was unfinished, bodged together and it showed. There is still a restoration project ongoing to try to fix the game, since Obsidian and Lucasarts have shown no inclination to do so. In fact, the last patch released by Obsidian broke the game, and it had to be repaired by the community. I strongly recommend you visit http://www.team-gizka.org/ to see their work, which appears to be nearing completion.

Anyhoo, this is a very long way of saying that I don't trust Obsidian to make a decent job of it. Which is a shame.

If it maintains the same level of epicness combined with a near parody take on D&D quests and dialogue, then I'm sold. Otherwise you can kiss my purchase goodbye.

OMG! Make it Obsidian, please! I didn't like KOTOR, as I found it to be a shallow and poorly written game, but Mask of the Betrayer was such a candy (even with that annoying spirit points) that it makes up for everything! A beautiful, atmospheric love story with mystery and compelling twists.

Baldur's Gate 3... I'm so happy, that I'll cry now.

@ Solivagant : You know, in all seriousness, get over it. If you want an isometric Fallout game with turn based combat, go back to 1998 and leave us be. Your complaints seem petty. I played both the Fallout games and am looking forward to the new one.

Baldur's Gate is closer to what became NWN and I would not be surprised if it went along those lines. Though I wonder if they will use the 4th edition rules.

As much as I like Obsidian lets be honest. Their games are good, but are NOT great. Kotor 1[Bioware] was better then Kotor II[Obsidian], Neverwinter nights I[Bioware] was noticeably better then Neverwinter nights II[Obsidian]. If anyone should be allowed to make BGIII it's Bioware. I want greatness, not good.

I understand that new games need new forms of gameplay, and I'm actually a fan of what I've been seeing from Bethesda with their treatment of Fallout 3. However, the traditional top-down D&D-based strategic gameplay of Baldur's Gate is so iconic in my mind, I will claim to be rightfully upset if it turns into another 3D 1st person Oblivion clone.

Actually, knowing Obsidian and Atari, it'll probably be more similar to Neverwinter Nights, which had really shitty camera system and mediocre story.

Mask of the Betrayer was great, and the bits of KOTOR 2 that were completed fully were far better plot wise then KOTOR. Obsidian are a good company. Not as good as Bioware, but who is?

That said, if Baldur's Gate III is being made by some team other then Bioware or Obsidian, that's utterly wrong.

@Aertyr

What aspects of NWN1 were noticeably better then NWN2, exactly? Boring gameplay, idiotic characters, dull conversations, retarded storytelling, stupid role playing, unimaginative story and overall sensation of eternal boredom while slashing through myriads of brainless opponents were the only aspects of NWN1. Don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to sound inflammatory, but my disappointment in buying that shit is just to great to leave your comment without a reply. The game was such a turd that I couldn't get myself to finish fucking Port Last, and as years have passed it only gathers dust and serves as a reminder never to buy an original game before pirating it first.

Now, NWN2, on the other hand is not a great game, but it's enjoyable. Gameplay is solid and characters are fun. Especially Khelgar, Sand and Ammon Jerro, and the story structure is sound although it lacks more plot driven twists. All conversations have their purpose so we can all say that the editors did a fine job in not boring the player with endless, baseless and useless gabbing like NWN1 does.

As much as I love Bioware (well, at least I did, before they sold their collective soul to the devil) I must say that NWN1 is an epic fail. It's not even a game. It's a game engine for unemployed people to develop their own modules.

Besides, if you're looking for greatness, look no further. Planescape: Torment redefined the meaning of greatness long time ago. No other RPG, not even BG2 or Fallout series can deliver such an emotional punch and totally ruin player's ass. Planescape: Torment is the epitome of storytelling and creative explosion of artistic beauty on all levels.

But if Bioware isn't doing it... then I have no hope.

Fucking LOVE the Baldur's Gate series. I'd hope they keep the top down RPG with tons of hours of gameplay and great story than to have a graphic engine upgrade and shit everything else.
