Rumortoid: A full list of the files found on Smash Bros. Brawl disk?[UPDATE]

Rumortoid: A full list of the files found on Smash Bros. Brawl disk?[UPDATE] screenshot

Like spoilers? Speculation? Hacking? Super Smash Bros. Brawl? If so, this story may be for you.

Deep inside the humongous, informative, yet never completely reliable Brawl spoilers page on NeoGaf, there is a link to a page claiming to be the complete list of files on the Brawl game DVD. Those willing to attempt to decipher the wall of text this list presents will find more potential spoilers than even those in Reaprar's world famous Brawl spoilers C-blog.

For the record, I've tried all day to authenticate the list and the super weird site it was found on. The list itself was taken down from the host's site hours ago and replaced with yucky-ness, but luckily I saved myself a copy and included it in the gallery of this post. It's a huge list, and had to be split up into seven parts. Even then it turns out the list is not compete. It ends with the words "movi", not the way these sorts of ISO data dumps lists usually end. Anything, the inclusion of more characters, moves, movies, information on anything could follow word "movi" in the text dump. We may never know.

The super weird site's owner, the person likely responsible for the original data dump and the corresponding list, is thus far unreachable for comment.  So stick all this info firmly in your "rumors" file for now.

My findings after the jump.

[Via Brawl spoilers page at NeoGaf

There is a lot to be deciphered from this list of file names, but I'm just going to stick with what I found most interesting; the potential for more playable characters.

Hope and potential can be found from the list's fighter\ef directories. There is such a directory for each of the thus far confirmed characters, plus a few extras. Those extras include Dr Mario, Dixie, MewTwo, Pra_Mai(?), Roy, Toon Sheik, Toon Zelda, Zako Ball, Zako Boy, Zako Child, and Zako Girl. Sorry folks, no Mega Man.

All these files chalk in at a size of 128 each. It doesn't specify 128MB or GB, so we'll just have to guess that it's 128 somethings. More importantly, 128 somethings is much smaller than most other character's fighters\ef files. For example, Peach's fighter\ef file comes in at "size:113280". The smaller file size for the fighter\ef directories designated to so far unseen characters implies that these directories may represent unfinished or otherwise unusable data.

However, there are four characters confirmed to be playable in Brawl that have these small 128 sized fighter\ef directories. Those characters are GKoopa (presumably Giga Bowser), Warioman, Nana (one half of the Ice Climbers team), and Mr Game and Watch. So what can we infer from that? Well, I take it to mean that fighter\ef files 128 somethings in size are for alternate polygon sets for other potentially playable characters.

The Zako series of files likely represent the Fighting Alloy team, are of whom are known to solely use other character's animations. Nana uses identical animations as her Ice Climbing partner Popo. As for Warioman and Giga Bowser, they are the alternate polygon sets for the final smashes of Wario and Bowser, and have no unique animations of their own. And since Game and Watch technically has no animations, just a series of texture maps cycled in specific orders to give the illusion of animation, it can safely be deducted that fighter\ef files must only be for character models and textures, and not for animations in any way.

So what more can we assume from all this? I don't know about you, but I'm taking this info to mean that maybe, just maybe, Dr. Mario, Dixie Kong, MewTwo, Roy, Toon Sheik, and Toon Zelda are potentially unlockable alternate character models for other currently confirmed characters in Brawl. I'm sure hoards of Wii hackers are already on the case, trying to confirm or deny this rumor. I for one was a little disappointed that the above characters from Melee were cut from Brawl, and would be delighted see them made available for the game via WiiConenct 24, tournaments, or other methods.

But more so, I'd like to think that all of Brawl's secrets couldn't be unlocked mere days after it's release in Japan. That would just be too anti-climactic for a game that's had it's secrets talked about for five years running.

Don't think me naive. I've been around. I am aware that this list could be fake, and even if it's not, that nearly every game has unusable data still on the disk. This could all be much ado about nothing. That doesn't mean I can't hope that the Brawl equivalent to GTA: San Andreas' Hot Coffee mod is a MewTwo, Dixie Kong, Toon Sheik and Dr Mario battle-orgy of epic proportions.

Anyone else out there want to get on board my hope train?

Yeah, looks like fake, farther in the file list, you can see there's no folders for characters such as Mewtwo, Roy, ToonZelda, but one for the Zako thing...

I guess there was few pieces of the old code of melee that wasn't deleted from Brawl, or someone tried to create some hype with a few extra filenames...

Anyway, I don't see where they could fit more extra characters into that tiny selection screen :P

Theres a program out there that will dump Wii DVDs, so this is entirely plausible, if it is true its always neat to take a look at the extra code that developers forget to fully take out that doesn't make the final cut.

It's probably unlikely but maybe this is how Nintendo plans to do DLC. The charterers are already in the game but you have to pay to be able to access them, sort of like that one Katamari game.

Elgemusio- Read my extended post for explinations of the Zako files.

And if by "farther in the file list" you mean the files for character's final smashes and other bits, I'm guessing that there is just one file for those sorts of things per character, not per polygon set.

For instance, there is not final\ef file for Sheik, just one for Zelda, as they have the same final smash.

This means that is the alt character model rumor is true, that Dr Mario would have Mario's final smash, MewTwo would have Lucario's, ect.

As for the character\fit files even further down, I have no idea about those. Sound effects maybe?

Again, there is no confirmation of any of this yet, so we'll jsut have to wait and see.

Well, whatever units 128 has, it certainly isn’t gigabytes — a dual-layer DVD can only hold 8.5 GB of data. My guess is that it’s in kilobytes — so the confirmed characters that have 113280 as their size, if we assume that the units are kilobytes, would each be 110.625 MB in size. That would leave the other as-yet-unconfirmed characters to have sizes of 128 KB, which really isn’t much unless they’re all clones of other characters, but even that doesn’t seem possible.

The assumption that each character is 110 MB is likely the best one, since 35 × 110 MB = 3.87 GB, which is nearly half of a full DVD-9. So if we go down three orders of magnitude and assume that the size is quoted in bytes, then each character would instead have a 110.625-kilobyte file, and the others would weigh in at a measly 128 bytes (1/8 of a kilobyte) each. I can’t see that being the case, because then the 35 confirmed playable characters would only amount to 3.87 MB total, and that’s nothing on a DVD-ROM. Who knows, though?

I think that this is like those games on the Xbox 360 where you download content that is in small MB or Kilobites and is already on the disk hidden somewhere, but all it does is unlock it. Probably the characters are already there hidden, but all you need to do is download some content to unlock them. I think this is going to be the first game to have downloadable content on the Nintendo Wii. But only time can tell.

Pra Mai is purasuru and mainan. Those are the jap names for Plusle and Minun.

also, for Sour Grapes, there's no problem with filling up the disk. It's a dual layer DVD, there's more than enough room. The problem is development time. These 128kb trash files of characters and skins and assist trophies they might put in later and characters that they scrapped early and didn't bother taking out didn't stop your super special favorite character from getting in. Practicalness did.

Yeah, that’s what I was thinking as well. A lot of times, developers just leave unused code/files on the disc instead of going to the trouble of removing it, and that might be what we’re seeing here.

Just so you guys know, this is a real dump of the files list. Crediar is a fairly well-known guy within the Wii hacking/development community and the reason that the list was cut off at the end was because the current Wii-disc-dumping tools don't yet support dual-layer DVDs. This is why there are no SSBB Isos or whatever up on the various warez sites.

Personally, I think they're probably unlockable alternate costumes -- like the 'original wario' alt costume of Wario.

Then again, maybe it's wishful thinking. I hope it's not trash data, though, 'cause that would be bad sucky.

Anyway, that's my two cents.

P.S. As an aside, the sound track of brawl consists of 314 tracks! It's over a gigabyte! Pretty insane.
timmet's Avatar
timmet at 02/04/2008 01:32

first off, the DVD is only 7.5 GB, so 128 probably refers to kilobytes. Game and watch should not take too much space since he is just a bunch of images, requiring no textures or 3d modeling which takes up the most space. If anything, the extra "hidden" characters might be model change clones, but I'm leaning towards cut characters. Most likely? This is a hoax of some kind. I'm thinking there are a few more hidden characters since all the unlockables seem to have been unlocked in SSE, and if that's the case, well, lame sauce. And one more thing, stop asking for ridley as a playable character. Yes ridley is awesome, but he makes no sense as a playable character. He's way too big, seriously, how does playing as him make any sense at all.
Tonjevic's Avatar
Tonjevic at 02/04/2008 01:39

@ Timmet: Game and Watch is actually just the cross-section of a 3d model. Or - at least - he was in Melee. It's interesting to see the various bits of his geometry when you give him a different character's moveset with an Action Replay. He goes through all the unrestrained motion that the other characters would, and so you get really strange effects where parts of his body change size and shape and stuff.

As for Ridley: Look at Charizard. He's a large dragon, too. They handled him alright. I'm sure that The Brawl team would have no trouble scaling him down to size, anyway. They scaled kirby up -- he's meant to be 8 inches tall.
Anyway, it's all useless, because he's not in Brawl outside of a Boss character.
