Rumortoid: 3D Realms and Apogee have shut down (Update) photo

Shacknews has learned from a reliable source that 3D Realms and Apogee have both been shut down. Their source stated that the companies have been shut down due to "funding issues." Employees from both companies are said to have already been let go. This news means that Duke Nukem Critical Mass, Chain Reaction, Proving Grounds, and more importantly, Duke Nukem Forever are now in limbo, if not completely canned.

Apogee was brought back to life last July and was working on the DS and PSP version of some new Duke Nukem games, which they showed off during GDC 09. As for Duke Nukem Forever, the last we saw of that was on the Jace Hall Show.

We're looking into the matter and we'll bring you more info as this develops.

[Via GiantBomb]

[Update: We got in touch with MMPR, the PR firm for Duke Nukem Triology. Here's what they had to say on the matter:

"Deep Silver and Apogee Software are not affected by the situation at 3D Realms. Development on the Duke Nukem Trilogy is continuing as planned."

So Apogee is still alive and kicking and no one from Apogee has been laid off.]

Well if this is true I feel sorry for the people who worked at those places. As for Duke Nukem Forever, that game was destined to never come out.

Who has it worse, Duke fans, or Sonic fans? I really can't decide. It's like both are being punished in their own little circles of hell for crimes they had nothing to due with. Duke fans are contentiously tormented with fleeting screenshots and rumors about Forever, and no matter how close it seems to becoming reality, it is always yanked away at the last second. Sonic fans, on the other hand, seem to be at this point praying for a death that will never come. And if your 2 favorite series are Sonic and Duke Nukem, then I guess you've been getting fucked in the ass continuously for the past 10 years. I can't even imagine how that feels.

end of all the duke nukem forever jokes now? 'bout time. I'm more interested in how they survived for about 11 years on no capital, they should write a book on that.

I knew Duke Nukem Forever would never actually release, but I never imagined the game would get outright cancelled. Duke Nukem Forever should never end.

Please let this be false.

The problem with the UPDATE is that it states the Duke Nukem Trilogy wont be affected. The Duke Nukem trilogy is a collection of new games schedules for the DS and PSP. So this means Duke Nukem Forever is not in this, thus, will officially never be released.

Even though the game was an ongoing joke, I think it is sad that we will officially never get to play it.

HAHAHAHAHAAHHA...... aAAAAAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHAAAAA

Oh this is just so fucking funny I can't contain myself... I mean sorry for those who lost their jobs but really, after making a game for 10+ years with no capital for the company whatsoever I begin to wonder how they were even getting paid all this time.

Am I the only one who is surprised that an alpha of this game has never leaked? They've gone through like, four engines. Half-Life 2 leaked in alpha, and Duke Nukem Forever can't? C'mon.

Actually, if 3drealms does go down for the count, I hope some dude low on the totem pole leaks it out of fucking spite.
Necros's Avatar - Comment posted on 05/06/2009 21:25

If this is true, this is actually pretty sad. Even if they're totally incompetent, 3D Realms worked at this for so long, and now all of their work could have been completely wasted. It's one thing to release a bad game, but I'd rather see that than not see it released at all.

Its not a good buisness model to be working on something for over a decade and not make money.

I played Duke 3D for probably 300 hours, and bought the cheesy unofficial expansion packs at Babbages. I liked it that much.

But seriously, stop tugging at my heartstrings and kill this piece of shit.

I actually want to play it just to see what 12 years of development will get you. Honestly, they nee to stop fucking around and getting this game finished already, or at least break it up into Episodes to ease the waiting. I never played the original, but 12 years? Seriously, WHAT THE FUCK?!? Valve could've made Half Life 2 twice in the time that it has taken 3D Realms to not even make this game once.
