Rumortoid: 2K Boston working on new X-Com

Rumortoid: 2K Boston working on new X-Com photo
     Take-Two

With 2K's new California-based studio 2K Marin confirmed to be working on a sequel to BioShock, just what are those folks at 2K Boston up to? If a rumor from the latest issue of the Official Xbox Magazine is to be believed, Ken Levine and company are working on a next-gen version of X-COM, the popular space-themed series that started on the PC in the early 90s.

This rumor is nothing new -- the gossip mongering Surfer Girl has hinted at the title in the past, and other rumblings throughout the industry have suggested this as well. The rights to the X-COM IP has been in the hands of Take-Two Interactive since June of 2005, but the company has been quiet on their plans.

Obviously, based on the sources, this has to be regarded as pure rumor. But as they say, "where there's smoke, there's fire," and this is one rumor that won't seem to go away. With E3 right around the corner, it's likely that 2K Boston's next project will be revealed in some fashion; whether or not that's a new X-COM title remains to be seen.

X-com was one of the games that really got me into sci-fi and space marines. I mean, I have no idea what Ken and team would do with it, but after Bioshock I've got a fair amount of trust in them. I really hope this is true.

Screw BioShock, X-Com > *!!

As long as they don't make it anything other than a semi-turn based strategy game. And none of that console bullshit either, no sir!

Anyone remember the fps squad game that was supposed to come out around 1998?

X-com might be one of the greatest games ever made, but it's hardly a setting that suits other game types. You have some aliens, guys with guns, it's not exactly a unique setting with memorable characters and isn't want made the game great, it was what they did with a whole bunch of clichés that was awesome sauce. I could very much see this turn into a BlackSite Area 51 clone if they just think they can get away on brand name and setting alone.

Turn-based Strategy or GTFO my X-Coms

As much as people mention RebelStar whenever X-Com comes up, I'm really thinking I should pick it up. Managing the troops bases and interceptions was a highlight for me, though, and I never heard that RebelStar really go into base/troop management like X-Com did.

But yeah, if this new alleged X-Com project is not Turn-Based Strategy, they really better come correct, at least with a bitchin' geo-scape mode and similarly randomized mission situations.

I hope this X-Com has the option to be turn-based too. I've got X-Com Apoc for my PC, and I spotted the Playstation games in a Gamestation for £29.99. O_O

Here's to hoping that this becomes eventually true. The first X-Com (or UFO: Enemy unknown, as we Euro-trash call it) remains one of my all-time favorites and I would certainly love something like it.

X-com UFO defense is the only X-com game I could ever tolerate. All the later ones strayed away from what I liked by making things way too complicated.

Methinks I'll be disappointed.

It will take a lot to get this IP back on track, but 2k have shown they can make a good game. I remain skeptical until shown the final product.

I have the OXM issue and it doesnt say shit about "X-COM" it just says something about an "X" game. Could be X-Men, X-Files, Xenogear, etc. People need to STFU about X-Com and let it die like the rest of ancient gaming.

I started saying stuff about this as soon as I first learned that Take Two owns the license. While I dearly wish it would be true, there's absolutely no evidence for it yet.

Also, Fuck Rammstein in the neck. Fuck you, guy. Fuck you.
