Rumors abound on Nintendo's new console photo

The cat is out of the bag now. Game Informer previously stated a new Nintendo console was on the way, capable of 1080p resolutions. Later, IGN's sources claimed that the new console will be "significantly more powerful than the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, and that Nintendo's intent is to recapture the hardcore market."

Furthermore, CVG's sources say that not only have publishers already been briefed on the new console (surprise!) but that a new controller will feature a "built-in HD screen." As the new console will be backwards compatible with the Wii, one would guess that at least some motion functionality is to be expected.

IGN also confirmed this backwards compatibility as well as that the all-new controller's screen will have touch capability. So it looks like Nintendo's latest hardware will have both the touch and the power.

Hm... A HD screen o. The controller? If it's touch screen, that could be pretty cool.

Nice! Although I think the software is the most important part of the business, it's always a good idea to keep up with the trends. Competition beware, Nintendo might start playing hardball >=D Also the idea of a screen on the controller? Nostalgia of Dreamcast memory cards anyone? Awwwwwwww yeeeeaaaaaaaah

HD screen in the controller?

Sounds sexy, but wouldn't that jump the price up and kill joypad battery life?

It would fit with their depressing release time frame for new zelda games.

Since it seems like they now essentially hold off until their current consoles end of life and as with Twilight Princess. Waiting and pushing the release back until they can release it for both systems.

If that ends up being the case, which I suspect it will ..... Nintendo just lost a bunch of sales because I'm going to wait them out next time around. Sorta like how I know there are going to be 4x revisions of the 3DS so there is no reason to rush out and buy one....

If it does have a screen on the controller, there better be another Four Swords Adventures.

Screen on controller...
Better than current gen graphics, but before next gen...
Company that lost large portion of the market...
Sound a little like the Dreamcast to anyone else? Not saying that Nintendo couldn't make that situation work better than Sega, mind you, because I think that this would be the best thing to happen to Nintendo in a long time. We'll probably see a Twilight Princess-esque situation with Skyward Sword as well. Just my thoughts.

It can be as powerful and feature rich as they can physically make it, but without solid, hardcore 3rd party games they aren't gonna recapture this hardcore gamer.

Even as a kid I was all about Sega. Mario? Or TERMINATOR?! Donkey Kong or SHINOBI - no contest.

Still, bring the hardware AND bring the games and you may get a look in from me.

Avian flame makes a good point.

Better than PS3 sounds great right now, but the Wii was, probably, even if just a little, better than the PS2.

It ain't gonna cut it when the PS4 and Nextbox come out.

I'd like to believe this is all true, but surely Nintendo don't want to turn away from the piles of cash the everyday public throw at them. Still, I hope they do. This sounds awesome.

If Nintendo wants to recapture the hardcore market they should fix Metroid. The last one was hweird (although I like Samus's voice actress).

1080p resolutions!! WOW!

So nintendo's realizing that kinect and move are stealing their audience, and thought it's time for a comeback?

Nice, but I'll only believe when I play it.

I hope its like the VMU on the DreamCast, that actually made it alot easyer to hide what plays you do on sport games and uncluttered the screen when playing RPGs.

While in the long run this will make the next gen nintendo system week, I feel that alot of devlopers have not been making games for the wii because of the lack of HD having to convert everything to 4:3 instead of a direct port of 16:9

THE VC AND THE WIIWARE CHANNEL MUST BE TRANSFURABLE OR THIS WILL FLOP FOR ME *coughf*

but it is nice to hear that nintendo actually cares after 4 years of me buying my wii, so what do I get out of being taken advantage of? nothing ><

I'm not sure how I feel about this. Maybe, maybe I'll consider buying it. I did consider buying the Wii, but back then, the lack of games I'd want to play a lot swayed my decision. We'll see this time around.

What's certain though is that this will put a lot of pressure on Sony and Microsoft.

So when the HD screen on the controller craps out, we get to spend wad of cash on a new one? Sounds like a ploy to me.
@Camiwaits
Exactly my worry, and though I have an intense love hate relationship with Nintendo, I don't know if I trust them enough anymore to not do something retarded like have regular old batteries for what sounds like another classic Nintendo gimmick. Prove me wrong you silly bastards.

I'm not buying this.

The console having HD capabilities I can believe, but an HD screen in the controller is pushing it. That sounds REALLY freaking expensive and just isn't something I'd expect of Nintendo.

Also in b4 YO SON WE HEARD YOU LIKE TOUCH SCREENS SO WE PUT A TOUCH SCREEN IN YOUR CONTROLLER~! O_O '

What is the controller could be used as an Emulator o.o? Think of the Possibilities o....o A touch screen in a traditional controller? No more having to worry about Sticky buttons...we will see Nintendo we will see.

I still don't quite believe the rumours. I mean, you completely slash the current generation with a cheap console and for the next you make the equivalent of a launch PS3? Doesn't sound very money smart.

"Nintendo's intent is to recapture the hardcore market," because they can't do that now with the Wii? Unless this new console makes your farts smell like cookies, I don't want it. Not because it won't be cool and have cool games, but because I can't rely on Nintendo to cater to my interests. I skipped the gamecube after the N64 and I'll skip the WIIII after the Wii. I'm ok with that.

As far as the Wii goes, I'm more than happy with the current level of graphics that Nintendo churn out on their first party games and not really bothered about them being better; if I was, I probably would've bought a PS3 or 360 long ago. Just seems to me that most 3rd parties still haven't been able to get all that much out of the Wii, which I can only assume is for lack of trying since I dare say a lot of games on the platform still look worse than or barely surpass Gamecube games.

By recapturing the hardcore market, they mean the dude bro market. The people that play Madden and Cawadoody.

They've already proven you can have a fun family setting with the wii, a system with significantly less power than the big 2, and literally crushed that market. So, maybe now they will go the opposite way, and show what they can do on the high graphic end of things...

also, I am going to absolutely shit my pants when Reggie comes out and announces the new system and tag line: "We are proud to present: The Nintendo Gorilla Methamphetamine; "NOW you are playing with POWER".

A pretty wild announcement, honestly. I was sure that this generation of consoles would last a really long time, but it seems like they will probably fall in this order: Wii (obviously), Xbox (no blue ray), PS3 (most sophisticated software). I think the PS3 has a lot of potential as a processor, but it will definitely miss out on all the new bells and whistles that even the new Wii might have! Exciting times...!

Given the wireless nature of the Wiimotes, backward comparability may come from being compatible with the current controllers, with this new controller being something else entirely.
