Rumor: Xbox 360 price drop and more photo

Yes, we know that everyone thinks they know.  Everyone we've talked to has this secret, official source that has let them know for sure that the price reduction is coming. Is this the next 'worst kept secret'? What's unfortunate is that no one can really, truly confirm a price drop for Microsoft's Xbox 360. It's in the air, and we can almost taste it, but we don't really know for certain. Because of this, chalk the following up to rumors.:

One of our tipsters says that, "If the Hollywood Reporter says it, then it must be so." We don't know about that, but they are coming right out and saying it. Hollywood Reporter says that we should expect a $50 price drop early next month. Someone in the retail world says that the price will be dropped on August 8th, which goes along perfectly with the 'Madden NFL '08 launch price drop' buzz that has been floating about. Again, although it's not confirmed, we've seen and heard it too many times to question it. Someone at Microsoft is giggling now.

Another tipster has heard that $100 CDN will come off all of the Canadian SKUs come August 1st, again coming from 'a good source'. We've heard a little less along these lines, but this is an interesting rumor. We'll wait to see if this pans out.

Lastly, and probably lowest in rank is the rumor that the upcoming Halo Limited Edition Xbox 360 will be the same price as the currently available Xbox 360 Elite, only 100gb shorter in the storage department. Green paint must cost a bunch!

This price drop would throw things right up in the faces of Sony and Nintendo, getting the possible $199 (or $249 depending on who you're listening to) in at a lower price point than the Wii, as well as making Sony's PS3 price drop look a little less special.

[thanks Zero I, Detry, and many others - via Hollywood Reporter]

$200 is usually my bar for purchasing a console, so if the 360 dips under that I'd definitely consider it more than I do now. If they keep producing titles I can dig like they've been pushing lately, I may pick one up yet.

I honestly didn't expect the drop to come so soon. I figured they'd wait until after the release of Halo to do it, but perhaps with the Falcon hardware they're saving enough money to do this. 199$ though? If that truly is the case then I see Nintendo matching it with the Wii. Then again, I still haven't seen a Wii in the wild.

It might either be super stupid or super smart to reduce the price from Halo 3 but I wouldn't hold your breath for a price cut until beginning of NEXT year, that is 2008 foo'!

Last I checked, 299 minus 50 equals 250. In the US, that is the same as the wii. Only in Canada will we see it cheaper than the wii. Screw that Halo 360, that thing is uglier than the Hills have eyes' cast.

I was thinking the same thing Derailment. But, DVDdesign introduced me to SuperMath yesterday and showed me that anything is possible.

If the 360 Elite (I want HDMI) hits 350 or so, I think I may actually be sold.

The tricky part is do you wait for Halo 3 to save your system sales or do you combine it with a price drop in order to increase the overall sell through of the system? I'm sure they're arguing about this right now at board meetings.

In many US states, if the price drops (not including sales) within 30 days from the time that you purchase your good - you can go back to the store and have them refund the difference anyway. So if they're waiting for Halo, and they drop the price two weeks later for the Holiday season, smart consumers will still get the price drop $$$$. Though how many consumers are actually smart..

IMHO - you probably wont see Microsoft drop the price until spring of 2008. At least thats where my prediction lies - but what do I know...

If they got the 360 under 200$ I firmly believe they could sell a crap ton of these things. Especially if they did it around the Halo 3 Release.

If I am standing in front of a shelf and saw xbox 360 for 200$ and a Wii for 200$ I would grab the 360. Of course the Wii is the new Ipod so if I was "cool" then I would buy the Wii.

Also, Dunkin Donuts doesn't exist in the south anymore. At least not that I've seen. Last I saw a Dunkin Donuts was in Providence, RI when I was at a conference. That was 4 years ago.

The price should drop before Christmas. Didn't they just see a 70% reduction in hardware sales compared to the same quarter last year? That pretty much confirms to me that they have to do something.

Halo 3 will sell 360's, supposedly 360's are making profit and not costing money now. So why in the world would they lower the price before Halo 3 comes out? That would be like shooting themselves in the foot.

I want to go to Dunkin Donuts now!

You redckon this drop will be hitting european shores too or will there be Sony maneuver where they dont call it a 'price-drop' they call it a starter pack and shift some games with the console?

So are they just gonna forget about Europe?

They've only just announced the Elite for £330 ($670), surely they wouldn't announce it JUST before a price drop. Or worse yet, have a price drop a month after it's launch. Then again, knowing Microsoft, they'd just refund everyone the money.

In fact, thinking about it now, they probably WILL just do the refunding thing. I remember when i bought the original xbox MS refunded me £100 because of a price drop.

Meh.

Fuck Krispy Kreme.

Microsoft is in such a position to pwn right now, and it's all Sony's fault. If not for the RROD fiasco, MS would be devastating.

I don't believe that it would be a good thing for the industry for either MS or Sony to be "devastating." Competition spurs innovation. And, since when in an age of software upgradeable hardware they can fix many things. Sony is slowly getting it's shit together with their online and MS is perfecting theirs. It's a win-win for gamers when no one company wins.

Dude. I live in da souf. I live in a very small city (and county) in SW FLA. We have 2 Dunkin Donuts in my little city, and another in a bigger city like 10 miles away. And no, this isn't some redneck south town with one gas station. It is actually very very populated, but like I said, small. We prolly have mo stuff than you yo. Lol. And BTW, we only have 1 Krispy Kreme. You know why it's called that? Because they let it sit and mold overnight so the shell gets nice and KRISPY.

And about the 360, I already have one. Drop the Elite down to $400, and I am SO SOLD. Cheers.

My info may have been a week or two off, but a console has never dropped price in August so it's not like I pulled it out of my ass.
I have some info about some new Microsoft hardware too, and it's not about a widescreen, games enabled Zune, that's for sure. lol.

if they do a price drop, they wont earn any earnings from console sales, but then again, xbox sales have dropped to a all time low. So I guess better to get them out b4 they get Ring of Rust.

The 360 is freaking OLD, it is time for a price drop and put those yummy falcon chips in it so I can trade in my old premium for an elite. Now if only I could sell my premium before the price drop (I need my data)...

I wouldn't even mind paying $400 for the system if they could make sure I didn't have to send it in every 4-8 months. Methinks no price drop until the holiday season (a.k.a. right before Halo 3), but if they could get the Core and Premium both within fifty dollars of the Wii, that would really propel the system's sales.

And KK>DD. Dunkin' is some kind of weird East coast thing. I remember long trips through Boston we used to play a game to see who could spot the most stores. Extra points if two stores were less then a block apart.

MS still has to fix them before I'll buy one, even at a cheaper price. I really, really want a 360, and this makes them even more appealing, but I don't want something that's has a higher than normal chance of breaking on me. If and when they fix it, I'll still get one even if there is no price drop.

bhive, I never said it was a good thing. I see your point. But as someone who has long supported the Xbox above the PS3, I can't help but feel a little pleased. (I'm not a fan of Microsoft beyond their game systems, though.) Though, while monopolies are never good, I still can't help but prefer to only buy one system and not have to worry about other consoles calling for my moneys.
