Rumor: Wii U spec'd like Xbox 360: 3GHz, 768 MB RAM photo

They weren't kidding when we said we could expect Xbox 360-like experiences out of the Wii U. If this information from an unnamed Japanese developer is true, it puts the Wii U near the power of an Xbox 360, and maybe even makes it a bit more powerful.

Here are the specs according to the source:

  • Quad Core, 3 GHz PowerPC-based 45nm CPU
  • 768 MB of DRAM “embedded” with the CPU, and shared between CPU and GPU
  • Unknown, 40nm ATI-based GPU

Wii U Daily says that this comes from a developer that is currently porting a PS3 game to Wii U. The same source says that Nintendo has been testing two versions of the console, one with 768 MB or RAM, and another with 1GB. This RAM is embedded with the processor.

As always, take this rumor with a grain of salt.

Don't care. Its a new Nintendo console, which is an insta-buy, because they don't really fail when it comes to its game library. The fact that its in HD is all that matters.

how much more processing power do we really need? Just keep delivering the goods, Nintendo. Thanks.

I really don't get why there is so little ram here. I can go buy 6 gb of ram for like 40 bucks.

I'll buy it for 200 dollars. Otherwise, this is Nintendo we're talking about, so it'll probably be 350 at launch. This looks like the Wii all over again (tons of last gen ports at launch, casual games reign because of inferior graphics and proprietary gimmick controls.)

Er.... so when the PS4 and XboxD20 are released, Nintendo will once again be a generation behind?

I don't really care, but... really? I thought they were planning on actually competing this time around.

Hmmm... still kind of hoping they stuff a bit more RAM into it. 2GB would be fantastic for developers, I reckon.

WHOA! About as powerful as a six-year-old system, you say?! SIGN ME THE FUCK UP!!

*drinks more Mtn Dew*

Seriously, though, I REALLY hope they release something with a bit more under the hood than what's already available on the market. Anything else is a bit of a joke.

As much as i love nintendo, if they keep making 'next-generation' consoles that are just only as powerful as microsofts/sonys previous gen, the PS4 and Nextbox are gonna blow this out of the water.

Really seems like a terrible idea to short the RAM like that. RAM is dirt cheap, yet crucial.

I don't think the gap will be as large this generation.

So is it going to be like the Wii and have barely any real games and have 99% shovleware. I don't really care about the power of a console just the games and I'm guessing that I will be getting this a couple of years after release the same I did for the Wii when they have a good game libary to back up those last gen specs.

Well they won't be a generation behind, people seem to forget that Nintendo aren't stuck in a ridiculously long cycle in order to make a profit, they have the luxury of now being one step ahead of whatever MS or Sony may do because they can be in a half cycle. have you not stopped to think that games consoles perhaps can't or won't get much more powerful than they are now? It's about how you use the technology rather than 'ooh it's got more RAM so it must be better', or some other bollocks like that.

So what you're saying is that roughly a year after the Wii-U launches Nintendo will be in the exact same spot as the Wii, because then the PS4 and Nextbox will be out and will crush Nintendo spec wise again.

It will have Nintendo games on it in HD, which is what matters. The leap between this and next gen seems rather minor anyway. More of a hop than a leap.

This right here invalidates the entire thing. IBM has already said that the Wii U is using the same CPU as Watson, a POWER7 not PowerPC.

Next gen consoles are only going to be as powerful as a mid-range PC today anyway.

Mind you, that's plenty of power, but the WiiU will still be able to run games, just low rez and with some other compromises (kind of like Pc and console today).

Yeah, there better be more RAM than this. I mean, shit, with RAM prices where they are, 768 mb has to be comparably expensive to 2 gb. I think there is more price in the components and labor than there is in actually gb these days, up to a certain point.

I'm less and less impressed by this thing as more details come out.

@redeemer Exactly!

@BrainWasherAttendent If we're thinking about the same Nintendo, then they've failed many times in their lifespan. The 64, the GameToaster and the Wii have all had lackluster libraries. Yeah there's some Nintendo gems in there, but the 3rd party titles are almost non-existent since SNES. And that's not the fault of the 3rd parties, remember when Capcom did everything it could to put exclusive titles out on the GameToaster?

Overall they need to stop stiff arming the 3rd party titles like they have in the past and actually market them. Masamune, amongst others throughout the past deserved that much.

This "ram is really cheap now" argument doesn't work for consoles , since they don't use the same kind of ram you use on your pc. That said, yes 768mb is pretty shitty for a "next gen" console, even more for the WiiU that has 2 screens....but i guess thats how nintendo works now, overpriced hardware with a gimmick

I think it will be stronger than this source implies (I don't understand computer crap), but not by much. And really, it doesn't need to be. 360 level games already cost an arm and a leg to develop. Anything much stronger would be expensive to develop for.

Why are we hoping it's at least as powerful as a system that is having it's 6th birthday?!!!!!

WHY DOES NINTENDO ALWAYS FEEL THE NEED TO BE ONE GENERATION BEHIND?

It was my prediction that this thing would barely be better than six year old technology.

Not that it's a terrible thing for me, who still enjoys first party games without the need for graphics, but really? This is going to screw over a lot of new potential customers when the PS4 and 720 are announced - those graphics are going to be insane, and win a lot of people over.

Also, you have to keep in mind that people like id and Ubisoft are complaining about how bad current generation consoles are. How much support do you think the Wii-U is going to have, third party wise, from developers who are already complaining about how limited things are NOW?

Nintendo was always about Innovation, rather then about delivering a powerhouse of a console. That said, other rumors say that the next generation will see an increase(in power) of approximately 20%. So...if the Wii U lacks a bit, it still won't force the developers to program an entirely new game. With the Wii this is the case. Don't wet yourself about rumors and wait until we have facts...good god internet. You worry about the new Nintendo console(Nintendo ALWAYS delivered)while we are getting backstabbed everyday by our western corporations...
What Consoles REALLY need though, is more Ram. A Triple Core and a 1 GB GPU is great in my book. Even on PC you can play the most games with it on high specs (correct me if I am wrong.
But 1 GB RAM? 2 should be standard next generation, 4 is ideal.

Before anybody panics, keep in mind 2 things:

1) Chip architecture has moved forward; just because the clock speed is the close doesn't mean it will only be so powerful.

2) It will probably be cheaper.

Bonus) Mario an Zelda in HD.

Except they have the worst game library this generation since the N64 days? At least that system had some decent 3rd party games.

Cute but at least Apple uses modern hardware (cpu etc) and just charges more for it. Nintendo is charging more for 5yr old technology.
