They weren't kidding when we said we could expect Xbox 360-like experiences out of the Wii U. If this information from an unnamed Japanese developer is true, it puts the Wii U near the power of an Xbox 360, and maybe even makes it a bit more powerful.
Here are the specs according to the source:
- Quad Core, 3 GHz PowerPC-based 45nm CPU
- 768 MB of DRAM “embedded” with the CPU, and shared between CPU and GPU
- Unknown, 40nm ATI-based GPU
Wii U Daily says that this comes from a developer that is currently porting a PS3 game to Wii U. The same source says that Nintendo has been testing two versions of the console, one with 768 MB or RAM, and another with 1GB. This RAM is embedded with the processor.
As always, take this rumor with a grain of salt.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
how much more processing power do we really need? Just keep delivering the goods, Nintendo. Thanks.
I don't really care, but... really? I thought they were planning on actually competing this time around.
*drinks more Mtn Dew*
Seriously, though, I REALLY hope they release something with a bit more under the hood than what's already available on the market. Anything else is a bit of a joke.
I don't think the gap will be as large this generation.

This right here invalidates the entire thing. IBM has already said that the Wii U is using the same CPU as Watson, a POWER7 not PowerPC.

That's good news then
Mind you, that's plenty of power, but the WiiU will still be able to run games, just low rez and with some other compromises (kind of like Pc and console today).
@redeemer Exactly!
@BrainWasherAttendent If we're thinking about the same Nintendo, then they've failed many times in their lifespan. The 64, the GameToaster and the Wii have all had lackluster libraries. Yeah there's some Nintendo gems in there, but the 3rd party titles are almost non-existent since SNES. And that's not the fault of the 3rd parties, remember when Capcom did everything it could to put exclusive titles out on the GameToaster?
Overall they need to stop stiff arming the 3rd party titles like they have in the past and actually market them. Masamune, amongst others throughout the past deserved that much.

WHY DOES NINTENDO ALWAYS FEEL THE NEED TO BE ONE GENERATION BEHIND?
Not that it's a terrible thing for me, who still enjoys first party games without the need for graphics, but really? This is going to screw over a lot of new potential customers when the PS4 and 720 are announced - those graphics are going to be insane, and win a lot of people over.
Also, you have to keep in mind that people like id and Ubisoft are complaining about how bad current generation consoles are. How much support do you think the Wii-U is going to have, third party wise, from developers who are already complaining about how limited things are NOW?
What Consoles REALLY need though, is more Ram. A Triple Core and a 1 GB GPU is great in my book. Even on PC you can play the most games with it on high specs (correct me if I am wrong.
But 1 GB RAM? 2 should be standard next generation, 4 is ideal.
I wasn't planning on getting it anyways since Nintendo consoles get ZERO developer support. They may sell the most but what the hell are we supposed to play for 10 months of the year!?
1) Chip architecture has moved forward; just because the clock speed is the close doesn't mean it will only be so powerful.
2) It will probably be cheaper.
Bonus) Mario an Zelda in HD.
but i guess thats how nintendo works now, overpriced hardware with a gimmick
I feel like I've seen or heard this before....
Except they have the worst game library this generation since the N64 days? At least that system had some decent 3rd party games.
@SephirothX
Cute but at least Apple uses modern hardware (cpu etc) and just charges more for it. Nintendo is charging more for 5yr old technology.
