Rumor: Wii is getting Beautiful Katamari, while the PS3 is not photo

The guys over at IGN have a nice rumor for you Beautiful Katamari fans out there who just so happen to own a Nintendo Wii. According to sources close to Namco Bandai, the game is giving developers a fit as they try to port it over to the PlayStation 3. This, combined with total sales of the console being less than expected, has caused them to quietly cancel the title on the PS3. Don't stop there; however, as the rumor goes on to say that the Wii is now the focal point of the resources previously associated with the PS3 version. Since porting the game from the Xbox 360 is rumored to be a no-go as well, the game is purported to be in development for the Wii from the ground up.

Does this rumor have any legs? Keeping in mind that this isn't the first time we've heard the Wii and Beautiful Katamari in the same sentence, I'm still a bit confused about one half of the reasoning behind the possible PS3 cancellation. While Sony's success with the PS3 has been somewhat stalled, the part about having trouble porting the game to it is pretty much the same case for the Xbox 360 to Wii transition. So what gives? Then again, with development costs said to be much less on the Wii, combined with the impressive numbers it's showing every month -- this rumor could easily become fact. We've now reached the point that even in the realm of maybes, Sony can't catch a break.

If it's a totally different game, they've just sold 2 copies. If it's meant to be a reworked port, I'll have to get the 360 version first and just wait and see what happens on the Wii version.

Trade-ins are possible.

FWIW, Kororinpa: Marble Madness is an awesome game. I wonder if Katamari for Wii will control in a similar way?

Well, it was surprising that Katamarai wasn't coming out for Wii in the first place. The PS3 rumor is interesting though. If it's true, I don't know what to say. Sony is just ... wow.

Wth? I think this is bullshit, but then again, stranger things have happened in the world of video games.

I'm surprised as well. That sort of game just seems like a perfect fit for Nintendo. Nothing about Katamari looks to push the next-gen envelope, yet it has a strong casual following. What is Namco Bandai's hold up?

Major flopix for Sony if true.

Wii port to 360 dosn't sound too bad though as the graphics kinda have that shit but still good look to them, so a bit of hi def and some polish and it should still look sweet on 360.

I kinda hope that this news is true. It's about time that a Nintendo console got some Katamari love.

Kinda too bad about Sony though. Those poor fuckers just can't catch a break!

it saddens me to think that we have reached a point in the business world were the company that made the series as famous as it is, will be left behind.

I just don't know how poor Sony will survive. Poor, multimillion dollar Sony.

I'll consider buying it on Wii if it's budget-priced. Should be interesting.

I was kind of worried about the 360's asymmetric analog stick, but if this is true, it would probably sell more. Current PS3 owners aren't really holding out for Katamari like PS2 owners are.

Well I think the game is perfect for the Wii but I hope it still goes over to the PS3. They need all the games they can get.

It just seems strange because the tilting motion seems perfect for a game like Katamari... but whatever.

Katamari on the Wii = instant purchase of both the console and the game. KATAMARI FTW!

Now someone release the original Katamari Damacy in the UK.

@Bricfa

Well it kind of takes away from the entire concept of using "both hands" to move the katamari as in the past.. But I would figure you just tilt the wiimote in the general direction you wish the katamari to roll.

I sure hope you're being facetious.

Final Fantasy got its start on Nintendo.
Metal Gear, too.
Most of Sony's bigger licensees got their start on a Nintendo platform.

This is nothing new, really.

Mykie, the difference is that MG and FF still continue to be released on NIN systems (albeit as ports or smaller projects). The point here is that the system that launched a game (although the credit is due to the dev [and the soundtrack]) would be no longer getting the game as a sequel. COME BACK KATAMARI!!!!!!!!!!!!

But on 360?? 360 owners in my store don't go for these types of games. It's all shooters. I guess I'll have to make some room on the dusty shelf next to Kameo and Bullet Witch.

Are you saying that there is no way the PS3 will ever get a spin off or something? My guess is that once it's install base gets big enough, it will get some love. Maybe Katamari Chrystal Chronicles!?
