Rumor we agree with: 'PSP Go' is Sony's next handheld photo

We hear things. Somtimes we tell you about them, but sometimes we can't just be all "Hey we heard this thing." Back in March, we heard some things about Sony's next PlayStation Portable, and we put it in a video discussion feature. Here's what we heard:

We heard it was internally being called "PSP Go!", and that Sony was already showing it off to potential developers and business-types. We also heard the unit would be small, about the size of a Blackberry, and would come in two flavors -- one with 8 GB of internal memory, and one with 16 GB of internal memory. You'd need that memory, of course, because the PSP Go! will have no UMD drive.

Games would be available digitally only, something Sony has recently been testing with the upcoming release of Patapon 2. The PlayStation Store would obviously play a huge role in shaping the system, as all software would have to be available digitally. With that in mind, we heard that Sony had planned to have over 100 classic PSP titles (former UMD releases) would be available on the store at launch. We also heard that Sony was keen to capitalize on not only the portable movie and television market, but also the music space; think iTunes, but with a Sony flavor.

Well, it appears the folks at 1UP have heard (mostly) the same thing, and now they're talking about it. Sony, of course, is quick with the "no comment." 1UP have heard it would be available this fall, something our own sources couldn't confirm.

Rumors are, of course, only rumors. And until Sony decides to show something to the public (perhaps at E3?), they'll remain as such. If we can dig up any new details before then, we'll be sure to let you know. And we won't make you watch a video of us ranting about stuff just to get them. Promise.

Yeah, I don't think I'll be getting one if it's digital only. High prices, no rental ability and no resale of games? All the same reasons I decided to stop buying games off Steam, because once you're done with you, you paid full price, like any other game, but no longer have any use for it unless it's multiplayer.

Hmm. I dunno about this. Yet another PSP already? Sure, no UMD drive and all, but way to burn those people who bought the games already and will have to rebuy them on the new system.

Though, it would be nice if it included an UMD/memory stick for the original PSP, so that you could copy UMD data onto a card that the PSP Go! could read. That would be a lot easier for many people to swallow as opposed to having shell out more money on not only a new system but the games they already paid for.

@eternalplayer2345:

Atari might not publish any more retail titles after their next big one (can you figure out which one?)... if even that. Also, Golobulus engineered the swine flu in a laboratory on the orders of Cobra Commander.

And it has no second analog nub. Silly Sony.

If it doesn't have a second analog stick, I'm not even interested. It'd down right ridiculous that they haven't even considered it. It's the #1 thing everyone wants. In fact its the only thing a majority of us care for. It would be a dominate platform if it did.

No physical games, no purchase. I will not give up the ability to lend/trade/sell my games. You know, the games that I paid for and OWN.

I don't see how it's possible, but Sony needs to make a way for gamers to transfer old UMD purchases to the PSP Go in order for me to even consider buying this. They MUST know that they will get burned big time by their current install base if they suddenly start stocking shelves with only PSP Go's and render all of those UMD's we paid 40 dollars for completely worthless.

In all honesty, I think this is a horrible idea. I will never accept digital distribution as the only form of purchasing. Give me a physical copy so if my Internet is on the fritz or if the servers get shut down and don't host a game anymore I can still play it.

And set amounts of gigs? No.

To be fair, it's likely that they'll still use Memory Sticks, so the gigs are more like a bonus than a limitation

they need to do what the ps3 can do and let you dual boot another os (aka some linux build) since it would keep piracy down with no homebrew argument and make for a more functional "netbook" utility, especially if it is going to have a touchscreen

There is no way in hell Sony can expect me to trust them with digital distribution with the sorry shape the PSN is in right now. If they want me to buy a product that relies so heavily on the Network, they really need to get their shit in gear and streamline the damn thing. Ain't no way in hell their gonna get a dime from me until I see some much needed improvement.

I've never had a problem with downloading off of the PSN. The lack of PS1/PSP games, however...

Nice to hear they're abandoning the PSP the year it finally starts to take off.
Digital Distro sucks hard, rendering your purchase valueless.

Hope they can sell a lot in the first two months before it's hacked. I can only speak for myself, but the main reason I haven't hacked my PSP yet is that I like UMDs and cases...I like having a collection on my wall ad I like selling games I don't play anymore for new ones.

I'm going to rub my penis all over this on launch day. I'm cool with digital games as I magically seem to lose all my portable games anyways. Can't wait for the actual announcements to happen!!!

To all the people wanting a second stick: What would we use it for? It would have zero effect (possibly?) on older games, and newer ones would have to be specifically coded to use it, and then work without it at the same time! I could see a second stick in a PSP2, but not in this gen.

At best, the stick could be used for mapping buttons, ala how the current stick is used for PS1 titles.

I think digital distribution fits perfectly for handheld gaming. As long as the prices are at least half off the usual retail price.

Kinneas123, how are your UMD-discs suddenly useles if you cant use them on the next PSP? Nobody is forcing you to sell your old one.

They could just set it up as alternate control schemes. One set with both sticks, available to the new PSP owners, and another without, for the old ones. The dual analog controls could black out or something on the old ones so they can't be selected.

I know Skanneri--but I'm nervous that they will end up phasing out the old PSPs, and then something will happen to my current model, leaving me with a bunch of UMDs I'll never be able to play again. Plus, I'd like the opportunity, as a fan who purchased an older model of the PSP, to be able to enjoy the newer model without too much sacrifice. Many times, when Nintendo and Sony release revisions to their consoles, people who already own that console end up upgrading even though they don't have to. If the PSP Go can't play UMDs, then nobody will upgrade their old models and PSP will lose potential business.

@ Robbo the hood, @Doomsday Forte: actually all you would need to do is have it set to default to the X, [], ^, o buttons in older games- just like the dual analog ps1 controllers and Doomsday Forte it would be a huge thing in fps and tps games that use the button control scheme for camera controls

Digital distribution is working fabulously for iPhone. If Sony can keep the PSN store constantly up-to-date (rather than the absolute fail it currently is in the US) I think it could be really successful. Hey Sony-give the US more damn PSone games!!!

This is how I feel. I don't have a problem with buying the $5 games on the iphone, but I don't want to start buying $40 games digital only.

Sounds like a revised model rather than a "new" psp. There isn't a ton of incentive for retailers to carry this go if they can't upsale some games with it. Accessories only go so far.

@whormongr/Robbo: Yeah, that sounds about right. I remember that PS1 games still mostly had to acquiesce to pre-Dual Shock controllers, though they sorta stopped doing that after it really saturated the market. I can't remember what someone without a Dual Shock did to play Ape Escape, as that one required absolutely every button on the controller, especially the sticks.

I guess that doing the same thing for the PSP wouldn't be so far a cry. Sure, the Dual Shock had some function with older titles, just that the original controller was not as applicable to future titles. Same thing with the DSi using the camera in some games and having that feature locked on old DSes, though eventually I'm sure there will be a DSi-only game (outside of DSiWare).

I'm blathering on, but yeah. If this thing is gonna be Blackberry-sized, tiiiiiiiiiny screen!
