Rumor: Valve won't release a new Half-Life in 2010 photo

Fans of Half-Life 2 have been waiting forever for another scrap of Half-Life -- the anticipated third downloadable episode or otherwise. And if a rumor holds true, it looks like the wait will extend yet another year.

In the rumors section of the February issue of Game Informer, its said that “Loose Talk has learned that there won’t be any game from the franchise in 2010, and what will finally come out is still unknown.”

Right. Rabbits eat lettuce. Cats bury their poop. And dogs eat their own poop.

It’s possible that Valve is just testing us: the studio won’t release the third downloadable episode until we prove that we really really want it. Kind of like "Saw," minus the whole bear trap facemask thing. We're considering contacting Nolan North for confirmation of this rumor, because if there's a game in 2010, dude's going to be in it. We'll let you know when we know.

Maybe this is some kind of reverse Valve-time deal. Like, they say it's not going to be until next year, but tomorrow when we log into Steam...

By now, I would think this is a fact.

This has been going on for too long. It's pointless to wish when we have been for so long.

E3........IT WOULD BE NICE.

Am I supposed to grief? As a Valve fanboy, I've come to terms with the issue of waiting for ridiculous amounts of time. Grass grows, Gabe Newall's fat, sun shines, Valve delays Episode 3.

I think at this point it's pretty obvious that the next Episode is going to be a full length game, and it's probably going to be on a new engine, since the Source engine is somewhat aged.

I allow Half-Life games to "get done when they are done" because they actually get released sometime.

Also, I am not saying it is impossible, but I doubt valve has the guts of announcing a third Left 4 Dead game after the reaction when L4D2 was announced.

It could also mean that they have a new franchise to pop up with.

It could also be one of the first years in a while that they do not have anything to show. So who knows.

and it's probably going to be on a new engine, since the Source engine is somewhat aged.

This seems like the most logical conclusion. But how long the engine will be finished (if at all) is always up in the air. Unless they are truly waiting for the next-gen consoles years from now, they might as well release Half Life 3.

They're not going to switch engines just for ONE episode. Unless they're testing the engine for Half-Life 3.

After L4D2s quick release I can't see them taking 2010 off, without any releases. So if it's not Half-Life, then what could it be?

@ Astalano

What I'm saying is that Half Life 2: Episode 3 will essentially be Half Life 3 in terms of length and innovation.

I don't think you should classify the new game from half-life just a "downloadable episode". All Valve games are downloadable, and I don't know what I'm talking about.

@ John Johnson

You're not correct. It's not going to be on a new engine. They've stated before that Half Life 3 will be on the next brand new engine. Episode 3 will of course be on an updated version of Source just like L4D2, but it will still be Source.

And there's no real proof that Episode 3 will be anything like you describe. I doubt that there will be something as groundbreaking as the Gravity gun/etc in Episode 3. I have a feeling it's going to continue the story and bring more HL2 action to the table, but I don't think it will change as much as you think. I would LOVE to be wrong.

They should release Ep. 3 as an 8-bit styled flash side-scroller. Legions of fans already consider them trolls, so why shouldn't they up the ante?

Sigh...I know they release them when they're nice and polished and totally amazing, and that takes time, but...god damn, I'd really like to wrap up this era of HL2 and finally have some conclusion. The wait for HL3 would be much easier than these so-called episodic games.

I think they have at this point scrapped Episode 3 all together, and have started working on Half Life 3. Seriously, so many years, no screens or info, just for a 5-hour ending episode? I think Valve may be up for something bigger.

At this point, if the game isn't full $50 length game, they're setting themselves up for a massive disappointment.

oi... y'know if their is one thing that really annoyed me about the release of L4D2, it's the lack of episode 3... i mean, couldn't they have diverted resources from a sequel that was coming out too soon to work on the game that everyone had been waiting on for ages and is coming out too late? really l4d2 kinda kills all of their excuses for taking so long... Valve's got it all backwards, episodes are supposed to be released quickly and sequels are supposed to be several years apart

I have been waiting for this game longer than GT5.

I loved HL2, & was really looking forward to EP3, but the complete lack of any news means I no longer give a crap. Even when it does come out, it won't come out for PS3 as Valve have Sony issues. If it's on a band new game engine it may require me to update my PC hardware, & quite frankly I can't be bothered with the expense or hassle of it to play one game.

If Valve can't be bothered looking after the legions of Half Life fans, or at least keeping them in the loop, then I can't be bothered caring what happens to Gordon Freeman any more.

Valve stands as a huge fucking monolith amongst other developers, they're respected and became bigger just because of their fan base. And that's awesome. It's like respecting Snoop Dog for what he did 20 years ago, although now he's making tracks with Soulja Boy.
They probably ran out of ideas, that's because their original staff that worked on the first Half-Life are fat and lazy motherfuckers.
Don't get me wrong, Half-Life is a great game, awesome franchise, it's very original etc. But it's like if Stanley Kubrick would've only filmed Spartacus, he wouldn't be such a great director, now would he?
People are praising Valve too much, they don't deserve that.

@GreatRedneckHope

I understand your point, but that logic in no way applies to Valve. Valve has released something great every year for the past 3 or 4 years. The orange box was not only amazing because of how good of a deal it was it also contained two of the most well designed games ever, TF2 and Portal. Valve then game us L4D which was the best co-op experience in gaming for almost a year until L4D2 came out (which is awesome). They had all of that plus Steam, and a never ending string of great and clever TF2 updates.

I would agree that their is a tendency for valve fanboyism, but i mean honestly they have earned all the love they get, more so than any other company. Valve is consistently great at what they do and occasionally revolutionary.

Except that Valve has released quite a few other games and shown insane amount of support for them for free on the PC (and paid on the 360) so it isn't like they are sitting around doing nothing, you know?

I´d love it if you were right. I loved HalfLife2, got more involved in it, and didn´t feel that the 'episodes' really took the story as far as I wanted it to go, that they didn´t live up to how goof HL2 was. If they release a full game instead of another episode, I´ll be a happy boy...

i wish they would just get episode 3 out of the way so we can start getting excited about HL3.

really it's been too long since ep2 and frankly my enthusiasm is starting to dip. i know they have done good work on L4D, and TF2 is going strong but i don't like either personally, and i need my valve fix!

@jettpack and Sgt Cheesecake, I see what you're talking about.
But TF was developed by Valve's fans, first TF was a Quake's mod. Valve later hired these guys. And same with Portal.
And Left4Dead was developed by Turtle Rock.
I'm talking about Valve as a developer. I'm talking about the original staff that worked on both HLs. Sure, their engines are awesome and all, and Half-Life is a pretty fucking unique FPS, there's nothing like it out there. And Steam is a great service. But when it comes to games, they only got Half-Life and HL2 with two episodes.
I'm just saying, that it's like an awesome writer who became a drunken bum.

somewhere an Anthony is crying.

i expect the portal gun to be in hl3 and also expect to see people surprised by it.

i loved the hl gameplay and the pacing of it but whenever some of the story was being presented, it was always just about to get good then something fucking happens forcing whomevers talking to me to tell me i now need to do this and that conversation ends right there. valve can write a good story but cannot finish it, its always just around the corner. always.

I used to like Valve, but the more I learned about them and revisted their games, my attitude turned into one of tolerance, then intolerance. While I used to anticipate Ep3 now I have no interest bar to test my theories of the quality of the franchise, which is hardly an interest at all.

PS. I was under the understanding that the Episodes were consituent of Half-Life 3, and the third episode would conclude the series, no?

Please do not put any Duke Nukem bad juju on Episode 3 or whatever it is going to be! I don't think valve would pull a 3D Realms but something like a fire could erupt in the valve offices and that is just as bad. *Knocks on Wood*

Byronic is correct - Valve have no concrete plans to extend the Half Life series beyond the planned episodes. They are looking to wrap up the entire "combine V earth" plot at the end of Episode three, which is most likely the reason they are taking so bloody long. Episode three is essentially Half Life 3 - and I'm betting that it will be about as long as Half Life 2.

It will be done when it is done. Half Life games have always had a tremendous amount of effort put into them, to make sure they are almost perfect. The amount of play-testing they go through is legendary. Heck, they are known to psychologically analyse the play testers after they play the game, and then re-design levels and art-work to improve the experience.

I think Episode three will be of stellar quality, and I am more than happy to wait. I mean, waiting isn't exactly difficult, is it? Just go about your lives and let it come out when it comes out. It's not like you're trapped in a box until the game arrives? Surely you have other things to do, other games to play, surely you have work, personal lives, and a whole big great ole world to distract you while you wait....

Surely you know this... right? I can't have been the only one to look out a window and notice that there's stuff out there.
