Rumor: US retailers refusing to stock Wii mini games photo

Sick of the endless stream of mini game shovelware infesting the Wii game library? According to reports, you're not the only one. Both Best Buy and Target allegedly share your views, and have grown so tired of cheap waggle crap that they are refusing to stock such games.

A Gamasutra article states that the two retail chains are telling publishers to not even bother approaching them with mini game compilations because they will be turned away at the door. While this will do little to dampen the Wii's unfortunate reputation as a dumping ground for awful videogames, it's still great to see that such lazy, cheap, insulting crap has saturated itself out of profit.

That said, some titles, like that terrible Carnival Games, still manage to inexplicably make money, so we'll have to see just how rigid Best Buy and Target remain on this moratorium.

What happened to "Nintendo seal of quality"?

I wrote why it's not inexplicable that Carnival Games made money. If you knew what those kinds of games were before arcades came around, you would get it was well.

But as for this, I say it says more about the expanded audience that they are less willing to by the same thing over and over again than more dedicated gamers willing to buy sequel after sequel.

"What happened to "Nintendo seal of quality"?"

It was a marketing gimmick. Did you actually take a look at many of the games given that seal?

Thank you Target and Best Buy. Now when someone's Mom picks up a random Wii game for her kid, you've increased the probability that she'll grab something good instead of some crappy shovelware game. You're going to make gaming better for tons of young kids throughout the country.

That's odd, considering how so many of those mini/sports game collections sell so well on the Wii, but getting rid of all the other shovelware crap off the shelves can only be a good thing. Maybe the good games on the system will get some decent shelf space and more people might actually buy them now!

I can imagine there were so many mini games compilations that casual gamers didn't differentiate between them, so dispite selling a lot as a whole, no particular version sold well individually, making it a huge space problem for retailers.

So there's no hope of Best Buy stocking my mini game collection, 'Generic Mini Game Suicide Vomit Party Collection Fun Time 8?'

There goes my profit.

This is a much needed move. You guys ever look at the trade in wall at any Gamestop and see the ratio of shovelware to games that have at least some redeemable value.

Time for developers to stop coasting with little point and motion mini-games and make stuff with actual substance.

On the plus side: Do notice that while we have a TON of these collections, we have not gotten another Mario Party in a while. This should be at least considered a victory.

My comment must've been lost in the mail. Huh.

Anyway, the gist of what I said was, is it possible that the removal of all of these games will just shrink the shelf space the Wii has already? You're going to have lots of holes, and it's not like when retailers looked at a list of games, they catered to the ones we'd rather no one play.

But hey, maybe I'm wrong. Let's hope so. :3

It's really sad that so many people are saying things like "Well now the developers can make REAL games" when they've been making tons of real games all along! It's not the devs' faults that you have decided to completely ignore the Wii's library of excellent games simply because there's a lot of shovelware for the system.

I mean, hell, you didn't ignore the PS2's great games because of all the shovelware it got. What's the beef with Nintendo, exactly?

The better written article that should be here instead of this "I got to hurry and make my quota of 20 shit stories a day because i cant be bothered to put down the controller" article by Jim.

http://www.destructoid.com/blogs/NihonTiger90/retailers-to-stop-selling-wii-mini-game-compilations-but-is-it-a-bad-thing--160119.phtml#story

Here's a pro-tip Jim. You are working right now. That means, put down the fucking controller, and write something newsworthy. Or, make us think you are at least trying to actually work for whatever money Niero pays you, and STOP TWEETING ABOUT PLAYING GAMES EVERY 5 FUCKING SECONDS WHEN YOU SHOULD BE WORKING. Fuck man, its not that difficult.

Or at least when you can clearly see the article already in the Cblogs, link to it, don't go out of your way to completely pass the article off as your own. It's bullshit, and more people should call you on it. But they are to busy calling you names and 4channing the place up.

Don't repsond to this, because it will just be c.y.a. material. Just do your job, and stop fucking off. You even clog up the twitter board like you do the front page of d-toid.

They stay because they're made from a first-party developer?

Hmmm...After the Metroid Prime Trilogy news yesterday, this is a good, albeit small bit of news.

I wonder if/how this will affect Nintendo's overall strategy. Maybe they will put more pressure on developers?

@Loophole Jumper
1)While you have a decent point about a few of those games being of mediocre quality that is nothing compared to the horrible quality of the shovelware games on the Wii.
2)There are way more shovelware titles on the Wii then there are mediocre 360 JRPGs. While I don't have the exact numbers with me it is pretty much a fact that this is the case.
3)Many would disagree that Eternal Sonata and Star Ocean are bad JRPGs. Eternal Sonata was short and linear, but had decent characters, superb graphics, and a somewhat complex battle system. Star Ocean had the best gameplay for any JRPG despite that fact that it was marred by the typical JRPG and anime tropes that was rampant.
4)The PS2 while being one of the best RPG consoles ever had it's fair share of bad RPGs. Should we do a story on that?
5)I highly doubt a few bad 360 JPRGs would have the same impact as dozens and dozens of bad shovelware games on the Wii that are being bought for no apparent reason.
6)You should play some Tales Of Vesperia, Lost Odyssey, and Blue Dragon. That may help your poor perception on 360 JRPGs.

I don't think the retailers are going to lose sales on this.

Shovelware consumers don't set out to their local store with plans on buying these games. They just look at the self and pick up the box boosting the amount of games included within. Although the games will now disappear, it not going to send people home empty-handed.

The Nintendo Seal of Quality was created basically as a method of telling consumers what games were approved by Nintendo to be released on the console. If you remember during the Atari era, there were no regulation at all on game packaging, content, what games could and could not be released, whether games were even functional or buggy or what- and this disorder led to the gaming crash.

The seal was never meant to mean 'this game is good', rather just 'this is a functioning game that meets our regulations and can be released for the NES'.

I suppose a better question is does anyone have the sales figures that show that people were buying shovelware (in brick and mortar outlets) in droves as opposed to better titles in the first place? Will this move have any effect or was the whole point of highlighting the Wii as the "home of shovelware" a convenient scapegoat for its perceived shortcomings in sales and production value of 3rd party and/or mature titles?

Part of me thinks we missed the point altogether and it's got little to do with the fantasy of the clueless parent, desperate to squeeze the most mini games out of their $19.99 on the way from the toilet paper aisle to the checkout line. I don't have an answer for it but, so far, I haven't seen anyone really take an educated, factually-informed stab at it - professional analyst, journalist, or otherwise.

As much as that may be good, not all mini game collections were bad so I hope those sell well and they hold off on the mini game collections for awhile.
