Rumor: The Last Remnant canceled for PS3 photo

The Last Remnant's PS3 port seems to be on shaky ground this morning, as Square Enix has apparently declined to list it among its upcoming games. The RPG was released on Xbox 360 a little over a year ago and was followed by a PC version, but the PS3 version is nowhere to be seen.

The rumor has come by way of Square Enix's own release schedule. The publisher regularly prints a magazine with a list of all its upcoming games, and The Last Remnant for PS3 is strangely absent. It's worth noting that the game still appears on Square Enix's official site, but the very latest release list seems to have it omitted.

It would not surprise me if this game had indeed been canned. The 360 version received a very mixed reception upon release, and with two major Final Fantasy games to work on, not to mention the thousand other projects Squenix always has on the go, The Last Remnant would be an easy cut to make.

It doesn't sound like PS3 fans would be missing much, really.

Yeah, wow what a shocker. Seriously though, I played it for the PC. I thought it was decent, but it was lame when I beat it after 20 or so hours and just stared blankly at the credits while thinking "wow, this is it?"

I really liked this on 360. Installing it to the drive got rid of most of the technical issues, and the changes made on PC added a lot to the overall experience. PS3 gamers are missing out on a gem, albeit a flawed one.

I played the PC demo and was SHOCKED such a game could be ported to the PC, SHOCKED I tell you.

That said, I didn't like it and never bought it, despite inner desires to support such a port. I've just never been a fan of so-called "JRPGs." Final Fantasy III on SNES was great when I was a kid, but after that not so much.

This was the single worst JRPG of this generation, I envy PS3 owners who do not have to with stand this crap.

Nobody really cares. but it could have been worse.

PS3 could have been getting a port of Infinite undiscovery, which was far worse than Last remnant!

I played it a lot on 360, and as Jayce Diaz says, installing it to the HDD made it a decent experience. It is a run-of-the-mill JRPG, but not necessarily a bad one.

The PS3 has a major gap in its catalogue. There has not been a proper FF-style JRPG. Yeah, a few Tactics Ogre-style grid battle JRPGs like Disgae 3, Cross Edge etc, Valkyria Chronicles is brilliant but more of a strategy game, Tales of Vespeira has yet to make it out of Japan. I love those kind of games, I have Infinite Undiscovery, Lost Odyssey, Last Remnant, Blue Dragon and Magna Carta 2 on my 360, not a single FF-style JRPG on my PS3.

It is mind boggling. The system is THREE years old, and not a single Square Enix RPG has been released for it. If they had bothered to port Last Remnant at some point in the last year, even if they royally fucked up the unreal engine running on PS3, it would still sell like hot cakes just because PS3-only owners are so starved for something Final Fantasy-esque.

NO WAI!!!!

In all seriousness, I thought this was pretty much a given considering how poorly the 360 version was received.

The PC version was technically far superior. The game just didn't do it for me tho. Or Star Ocean. In fact the only good JRPGs this generation are Lost Odyssey and Tales of Vesperia. Infinite Undiscovery was a waste of my time. Demon's Souls, while not your standard JRPG, is brillant however. If you have the ca hones that is.

@Nevi Microsoft really wrapped up the market, but you can bet the farm on that the PS3 will have a killer lineup. Just takes time, remember the PS2? The best comes out closer to the end of a console cycle, which this time is longer then the past.

This and Infinite Undiscovery both looked like paint-by-numbers JRPG shite, and evidence that Square-Enix is just milking the same old cow that has been shooting out dust for the past few years. As a potential PS3 owner who has no interest in buying a 360, the only RPGs I'm excited to check out are Demon's Souls, Valkyria Chronicles, Disgaea 3, and anything else Atlus, Media.Vision, or Namco might have in the pipeline (a new Wild ARMS, Shin Megami, or Tales game would be nice). I might look into Final Fantasy XIII or Star Ocean 4...but not very enthusiastically...and in no hurry.

Square-Enix's run of titles since the merger have been extremely uninspiring. When the PS1 was out, I would go apeshit when Square announced something new, since you could often expect something that was, at the least, artistically pleasing. Right now, I find myself having at least a half-dozen PS2 titles from them that I've picked up used at Gamestop over the years (Kingdom Hearts, Unlimited Saga, Radiata Stories, Star Ocean 3, Grandia 3) and NONE of them seem to command any priority amongst my giant PS2 backlog. The only one I've got that I'm really interested in playing is Valkyrie Profile II. I played through almost all of Final Fantasy XII, but ended up just not caring about the story or caring about finishing the game. Final Fantasy X-2 was just fucking awful and Dirge of Cerberus makes me cringe.

I personally played the PC version for 20 minutes before turning it off, I HATED it.

That said, this is Unreal3 based, so porting it across would involve little to no work... so why they aren't doing it is beyond me.

Are people thinking of the right game here? Infinite Undiscovery was the awful one, The Last Remnant had slowdown problems if you didn't install it on the 360, but the PC and PS3 versions were supposed to fix that. Other than that the game was pretty good as I recall it.

This is why we can't have nice things like SaGa 2.

Cant say i thought it was good enough to really be that big a deal to ps3 gamers, though.

Vesperia, So4 and Lost odyssey were all leagues better,

I just hope that they divert Last Remnant's resources towards making Xenogears and Einhander available on the stateside PSN store. I could care less about anything else they're working on.

I thought it was alright. Yes, the presentation had a few hitches, but the gameplay was fun for the little bit that I played (4-5 hours or so). That's what this game was about; the gameplay, the positioning, the armchair general-ness of it all. The problem is, actual strategy-RPGS are so much more involving IMO and most normal RPGs don't place that much emphasis on positioning. This exists in a happy medium, a game made for me; interested in strategy RPGs but too retarded to figure it out.

MrSadistic - No, you did not beat Last Remnant in 20 hours. That is literally impossible. No, you cannot challenge that. It is literally impossible. The amount of time spent in boss battles alone is more than that, and that's with absolutely perfect everything.

You are bullshitting.

Also, the game was much better than everyone seems to think it is, and it was anything but "paint-by-the-numbers." The problem was that it was completely obtuse to the point of ridiculousness. The player had to learn literally everything from scratch with no help from the game at all. Those of us who completely beat the game found not only one of the biggest challenges in RPG history but also one of the most rewarding games ever.

Also, to call Last Remnant samey while saying you'd like to play Disgaea 3 is extremely laughable. Especially when you go on to call out Square for making the same game too much when they've done nothing but put out extremely varied games (see World Ends With You, Last Remnant, Crystal Chronicles: Echoes of Time to Crystal Bearers, FFXII to XIII).

I'm glad to see someone like EggmaniMN actually piping up on threads like this. It's clear to anyone who played even 10 hours into this game that essentially no one else here even touched the game. I'm not saying it was some fantastic, life changing experience, but when I see a majority of gamers vehemently criticizing a game they probably only heard about in passing (and are most likely confusing with Infinite Undiscovery), I don't feel a whole lot of pride in the community I'm part of. Don't BS topics you aren't actually familiar with.

Back on topic, I think it's wiser for Square not to bother with the port. I have a feeling (largely due to gamers feeling the need to talk about things they're not actually informed about) that the negativity surrounding this game would have kept the port from being profitable. I liked it, but yeah, it was flawed.

I too found it to be a great game. Sure the battle system was kinda convoluted and random, but it made every battle interesting since you never knew how the hell it was going down. If I didn't have a lot fo other games to play I'd keep playing to beat all the optional bosses in the free DLC.

Oh come on guys, the game is nowhere near as bad as you think. If you just rented it, you missed out, the biggest issue with the game was grinding and figuring out the best squads and formations and constantly shifting strategies for every visit to every area.

It had a lot of micro-managing, aside from that, the texture popping and the incredibly vague achievements, I enjoyed it.

Now I'm working on all the Star Ocean achievements. I apparently have to finish the game at least five times... and it's Star Ocean. (sigh)

This obviously needs to be said, Infinite Undiscovery, the game where the world is chained to the moon was good, The Last Remnent on the other hand was all about collecting the remnents which was not good, who wants to spend 30 minutes in the same god damn battle?

I thought both Infinite Undiscovery and Last Remnant were good, but yeah, I agree that it took either a really heavy background with RPG's or a long and steep learning curve to be god at either of them...

And for the record, sometimes a good, massively long, epic boss battle's good for you.
