Rumor: Team Ico's Fumito Ueda has left Sony photo

If the rumor is true, Sony may be losing one of their best game creators.

Eurogamer says that Fumito Ueda, Team Ico boss and creator of Shadow of the Colossus, Ico and the upcoming The Last Guardian, has left Sony. Sources say that Ueda will continue work on The Last Guardian, but as a freelance worker. When he's done with the game, he'll move onto new personal projects.

If this rumor is true, I wonder why he bailed. Maybe there was too much pressure to ship The Last Guardian, which has been delayed a few times now.

Sony doesn't comment on rumors, but I know you do.

He must have heard about the Vita memory card pricing.

Best luck to him in the future, I hope he stays in the industry in some capacity for a long time to come. ICO was one of my most memorable PS2 experiences, and that's saying something.

Fumito is anonymous! You heard it here folks! But seriously..are "personal projects" other games, or like life issues. Its gotta be hard for people who strive for perfection having everybody above you screaming" just release it, we can patch the damn bugs out in the coming months"

A developer has two options
-Release a game that is unfinished, finishing it later with priced dlc
-Release a finished game, but never make a profit.
The only game I've played this generation that walked the tight rope of feeling finished and not taking a decade was dark souls.

I admit his games are fun but to say "one of the best" raises an eyebrow then again this coming from a suikoden fan lol. I hope he continues to make games regardless of what flatform

Not really a big deal for me. Both Ico and SotC, were hugely overrated. Maybe Sony can focus on gameplay and less on "art".

Dark Souls and Skyward Sword.

I think Ueda is a master of gaming ambience. Only matter of personal preferances.

I'm hoping this just means the project is wrapping up and he's semi-retiring to be with his family and NOT that something crappy happened between him and Sony.

It'd be great to have him partially involved in several freelanced projects down the road instead of killing himself on a single game.

If this is true, and (I'm assuming) Team ICO ends up either shutting down or becoming a lesser game, I still appreciate everything they've done for videogames in general. Shadows Of The Colossus is one of my favourite games, and others would say the same, so I'd be happy with what could be the greatest trilogy of games in videogame history.

My heart was in my throat for a second there. Thank God that game is still being made!

Reminds me of my selfish attitude when I heard that Heath Ledger died: "please tell me they finished filming The Dark Knight!"

I can't speak for how he works or about his team but they are responsible for creating some of my most memorable gaming experiences. Those are the games I'd like to see more of, not AAA shooters so this makes me a bit sad. Hope he will keep building these experiences in one way or another in the future and that his team continues his good work.

The real shame is if he leaves Team Ico; those guys are magicians in my eyes. Is Team Ico independent, or is it owned by Sony?

Maybe he left so he could take those personal projects and take them multiplatform? I would like to think so since more people who own Wii/360 would be able to enjoy his work. ICO/SoTC are great games everyone should play at least once.

If so then good news maybe NOW he will make some creative non-exclusive games not under pressure from $ony Or even better join MC Last Guardian on 360 would be tight

Hope this doesn't compromise the quality/vision of the title. I also hope he doesn't stop making games.

Bad news, if so.

Ueda is cream of the crop. While I doubt this is true, if it is Sony will indeed suffer a great blow.

It's not really such a bad idea he'll probably still make games for Sony platforms, doing this might give him more freedom to do what he wants which might be a good thing. Maybe he'll start working on some smaller games that see the light of day much faster.

I bet Last Guardian has been steered by management into a move-wagglan virtual-pet style game.

If he stays within the gaming industry, then it really shouldn't matter to most gamers. I would honestly love it if more people got to play his releases, and experience some of the most unique games in the entire industry. If not, then I'll be sad, but the man is responsible for some of my own personal favorite moments in gaming, period, so I will be interested in whatever he ends up doing, and I wish him the best regardless.

If I had to make a guess, it would be that he's invested so much of himself into The Last Guardian, and needs to step back from Team ICO, at least for awhile. He's been working on this for years and years.

I doubt it has anything to do with Sony. Worldwide Studios is generally hailed as a great place to work, especially compared to the other large publishers. Besides, Fumito Ueda commands so much respect that he could probably do anything he wanted and Sony would simply sign the check.

I eagerly await TLG, and anything else he creates. ICO, more than any other game, showed me that this industry has incredible potential above and beyond what we usually play, and is one of the biggest reasons why this became my primary hobby.

I'm questioning this. The man was basically given an unlimmited budget and a release date of "when its finished" while working with Sony, and they clearly didn't make any changes to his visions. Why would he walk away from that?
ockasee's Avatar - Comment posted on 11/30/2011 17:33

Even if this is true and he were to have no more involvement in TLG, I don't imagine it would hurt the project overmuch at this point. Still, that headline made my heart skip a beat.

Wherever he ends up, he will continue to do amazing things I'd imagine. I always got the impression though that what made Ico and SotC special was not just him but the team, in the sense that, as a whole, they approached video games as outsiders.

Sony seemed much more intent this generation on shedding the quirkiness that made the PS2 such a special product. The truth of this rumor would seem to solidify that notion.

Oh I know, those are great counter-examples. I was speaking generally.

Perhaps another way to state it is that something has been lost from that generation to this. Certainly the level of 3rd party support for the PS2 is unparalleled today, and maybe it's as simple as that. As for Sony 1st party development, losing Ueda can't be a good thing.

Pressure from Sony? Ummm... Isn't that better than forcing your developers *cough* RARE *cough* to only create Kinect crap?
*Badum Tish*
Also, MC? My Cock? I don't think anyone would want to get in your coc*, seeing as how that is gross, and inappropriate for a Pre-pubescent 9 year old kid like you to say, you sick fuck!

P.S. I remember you saying that The Last Guardian does suck because it's a PS3 exclusive. If it does come out for the Xbox (probably when you finally mature in 720 years but might not), are you going to take back what you said just because it's in your gay lover Xbox's disc tray?... Hey, where's your mom anyways? She's worried about you because she hasn't breastfeed you since 30 seconds ago. Shoo shoo, you little bugger!

Unless you're saying Ueda has been fired, that really makes no sense.

As for the quirkiness, it's still there on the PSP. Blame that one on Japan for being primarily a handheld market.

@Ockasee: Like Jim said, if its true, which it probably isn't. Meanwhile, they've added Sucker Punch and Media Molecule to first party this gen. Surely thats an improvement.

I don't play handhelds (I have enough platforms to juggle as it is) so that part of the industry is off my radar, but point taken.

@Indigo
Indeed. This generation isn't over yet (I hope. I think this gen still looks great. Heck, I think many last-gen games still look great), so I would gladly eat my words.

Pulling a George Costanza and leaving on a high note! More power to him I say! Excited to see what he does next! People get so caught up in the games and systems that they forget that he is a man with a job like you or me and sometimes you leave your job on a new adventure. I'm doing that right now so I suspect I share his excitement!!

think after The Last Guardian he could go in other companies

such as Sega, Platinum Games or even Square Enix.

if he decide to go to square enix that would be awesome :P

he could definitely offer some new talent plus using the engine of Luminous Engine would be awesome :P

I really doubt its true...I think if your that invested in your games and get the amount of freedom they must have at this point its unlikely you quit your trilogy this late in the game...

If its true however then im pretty shocked...

I'm kind of hoping the reason (if this is true) is that he realized his amazing talent is going to waste only developing for one console, and that he will now be a multiplatform developer. (and hopefully that he'll develope his games just a little bit faster)
